Book Synopsis Multilingual Practices in Language History by : Päivi Pahta
Download or read book Multilingual Practices in Language History written by Päivi Pahta and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texts of the past were often not monolingual but were produced by and for people with bi- or multilingual repertoires; the communicative practices witnessed in them therefore reflect ongoing and earlier language contact situations. However, textbooks and earlier research tend to display a monolingual bias. This collected volume on multilingual practices in historical materials, including code-switching, highlights the importance of a multilingual approach. The authors explore multilingualism in hitherto neglected genres, periods and areas, introduce new methods of locating and analysing multiple languages in various sources, and review terminology, theories and tools. The studies also revisit some of the issues already introduced in previous research, such as Latin interacting with European vernaculars and the complex relationship between code-switching and lexical borrowing. Collectively, the contributors show that multilingual practices share many of the same features regardless of time and place, and that one way or the other, all historical texts are multilingual. This book takes the next step in historical multilingualism studies by establishing the relevance of the multilingual approach to understanding language history.

The book is meant to be a snapshot of Nordic Linguistics as it is practiced today, reflecting at the same time its established research traditions as well as its forages into new methodologies and theories.
Book Synopsis A Paradigm of Comparative Lexicology by : Floriana Popescu
Download or read book A Paradigm of Comparative Lexicology written by Floriana Popescu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended to bridge the gap between two languages of the Indo-European family, this is the first comprehensive bifocal approach to lexicological aspects. Through its theoretical distinctions and applications, the book recommends itself to language professionals and to any reader interested in learning more about words. It starts with a brief theoretical account of overlapping terms, which are given crystal-clear disambiguations. The book then focuses on structural representations of word formations and word relationships, outlining their hierarchicalness and branching directions and revealing various levels of materialization entailed by lexical productivity and frequency of occurrence. Each of these hierarchies defines its related techniques and explains lexical creations, adaptations or adoptions and interrelationships. The approach adopted here proves English to be consistent with formative and sense-related hierarchies, and shows it to have reached a climax in language evolution with its status of a global language, making it the standard in comparative linguistics.

Book Synopsis Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom by :
Download or read book Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Sixth International Conference on Teaching and Language Corpora (4-7 July 2004 Granada, Spain) and reflect the latest developments that have taken place in the field of the teaching applications of text corpora, with a special emphasis on their use in the foreign language classroom. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section sets the scene for what this collection of essays aims to be. It deals with the issue of what corpus linguistics can do not only for the understanding of the nature of language itself but also for so fundamental and miraculous a matter such as language learning and language acquisition. The second section tackles the issues of corpus design and corpus exploitation and provides the reader with a great variety of evidence in favour of corpora exploitation for the building of a successful teaching environment. The final section deals with practical applications of corpora in the foreign language classroom. Although each of the papers here reports particular experiences in very different teaching and learning contexts, as a whole they show that corpora can be used on the spot in a language teaching context by teachers and learners without extensive training in computational tools, and studies of linguistics features can be tailored to specific pedagogic context and learning requirements. The book represents a solid contribution to linguistic studies and language teaching and it is a good example of the diversity of the scientific lines in which corpus linguistics is involved at the present moment.

Book Synopsis Performed Culture in Action to Teach Chinese as a Foreign Language by : Jianfen Wang
Download or read book Performed Culture in Action to Teach Chinese as a Foreign Language written by Jianfen Wang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores best practices in implementing the Performed Culture Approach (PCA) in teaching Chinese as a foreign language (CFL). Offering a range of chapters that demonstrate how PCA has been successfully applied to curriculum, instructional design, and assessment in CFL programs and classrooms at various levels, this text shows how PCA’s culture-focused paradigm differs fundamentally from the general communicative language teaching (CLT) framework and highlights how it can inspire innovative methods to better support learners’ ability to navigate target culture and overcome communication barriers. Additional applications of PCA in the development of learner identity, intercultural competence, autonomy, and motivation are also considered. Bridging theoretical innovations and the practice of curriculum design and implementation, this work will be of value to researchers, teacher trainers, and graduate students interested in Chinese teaching and learning, especially those with an interest in incorporating performance into foreign language curriculums with the goal of integrating language and culture.
