Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Missions In the deepest sense there are no Foreign Missions, for it is work at all times among children of God in the one human family, of one blood, by the one Church. But the name of this handbook stands as descriptive of the work of the Church in non-Christian lands. No sermon or speech on missions should omit a heartfelt reference to the command of the Lord to us to win the world for Him as His fellow-workers. This book therefore must devote the first chapter to that subject. Whatever else may be our duty this command runs parallel with them all, as a necessary part of every Christian's privilege and duty. And yet it is one of the well-known defects of settled Christianity that those who owe to Christ all they hold most dear, are apt to forget His commission and see no reason why they should share with all others the love and mercy and knowledge of God. The following reflections may be of use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists" was published at the pivot point of the denomination's mission development. By 1886 the young church had been in the foreign mission business for a dozen years. But as yet it had only four missions (three in Europe and one in Australia/New Zealand), and those four were just moving beyond their infancy stage. By late 1886 the Adventists were becoming ever more committed to foreign missions. As a result, their first book-length document on missions represents a valuable historical record of the denomination's early missions. It also contains revealing reports from a variety of authors, including Ellen G. White, on the strategies developed to further those missions and a call for a much more expanded mission work in the future. Thus "Historical Sketches," when seen in its context, was both a summary sketch of Adventism's missiological past and a pointer and an appeal to the future. The scholar's introduction by George R. Knight provides a broad, summary overview of the development of the denomination's mission thought and practice, ranging from the early "shut-door era" to explosive growth beginning in the 1890s. The essay also provides a helpful content analysis of the various sections of "Historical Sketches."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1810 marks the start of the North American foreign missions movement -- a movement begun with typical American enthusiasm and vigor but in need of practical grounding. This volume explores important facets of the development of North American foreign missions, paying particular attention to the role agencies like the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) played in shaping the theology, theory, and policy of evangelistic activities overseas. Written by leading experts on missions and religious history, this volume is distinguished by its focus on key events taking place at the home base rather than on happenings in the foreign mission field. In doing so, these insightful studies shed light on important yet neglected topics, including the impact of debates about slavery on foreign missions, the emergence of distinctive mission strategies for women, the role of the social gospel as a missionary ideology, and the contribution of foreign missions to the creation of a global evangelical network. Contributors: Alvyn AustinRuth Compton Brouwer, Wendy J. Diechmann Edwards, Janet F. Fishburn, Paul Harris, David W. Kling, Charles A. Maxfield III, Susan Wilds McArver, John F. Piper Jr., Dana L. Robert, Richard Lee Rogers, Wilbert R. Shenk, Carol Ann Vaughn. bThis excellent volume will command widespread attention not only for its display of scholarly expertise but for the fresh and revealing light it throws on the principal landmarks and major themes in the history of missionary expansion overseas.b -- Andrew Porter Kingbs College London

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses on Foreign Missions: Delivered Before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions So many requests have been made to the officers of the Board by those interested in its work for the publication of this series of ad. Dresses, of which only three have been printed in pamphlet form, that, with the consent of Dr. Storrs, they are now brought together in the present form - in the hope that, with God's blessing, they may quicken and widen interest in the great cause which they were designed to serve. It is confidently believed that the powerful impressions produced when these addresses were first delivered, at a critical period in the history of the Board, will be lrevived in many who heard them, and that others now and in coming years will read them with profit and delight, as among the best specimens of sacred eloquence employed upon the noblest of themes. When we examine the lives of "missionary heroes," we immediately notice their willingness to sacrifice comforts that contemporary believers consider necessities. One of these areas of sacrifice was in their love lives. In different ways, the three missionaries discussed in this book willingly gave up the opportunity of "true love" for the sake of advancing the gospel into unengaged areas. Embracing Christ's command to "deny oneself" (Luke 9:23), these believers gave up the chance of earthly happiness for the sake of heavenly reward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventism was born as a radical millenarian sect in nineteenth-century America. It has since spread across the world, achieving far more success in Latin America, Africa, and Asia than in its native land. In what seems a paradox, Adventist expectation of Christ’s imminent return has led the denomination to develop extensive educational, publishing, and health systems. Increasingly established within a variety of societies, Adventism over time has modified its views on many issues and accommodated itself to the “delay” of the Second Advent. In the process, it has become a multicultural religion that nonetheless reflects the dominant influence of its American origins. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Seventh-Day Adventists covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 600 cross-referenced entries on key people, cinema, politics and government, sports, and critics of Ellen White. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Seventh-day Adventism.

Book excerpt: Now revised and updated to incorporate numerous new materials, this is the major source for researching American Christian activity in China, especially that of missions and missionaries. It provides a thorough introduction and guide to primary and secondary sources on Christian enterprises and individuals in China that are preserved in hundreds of libraries, archives, historical societies, headquarters of religious orders, and other repositories in the United States. It includes data from the beginnings of Christianity in China in the early eighth century through 1952, when American missionary activity in China virtually ceased. For this new edition, the institutional base has shifted from the Princeton Theological Seminary (Protestant) to the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural Relations at the University of San Francisco (Jesuit), reflecting the ecumenical nature of this monumental undertaking.
