Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: This paper presents an empirical study of Foreign Language Anxiety in Chinese university students learning English as a foreign language. The subjects of the present study were 344 college students from Mainland China. They responded to a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire adapted from Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). Their responses to the questionnaire were submitted to exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (with the help of statistical package of SPSS and AMOS) for identifying anxiety dimensions. The results show that four dimensions of anxiety exist among the subjects and the two dimensions of the FLCAS were closely examined to find the extent to which that the four-factor model adequately fit the data. The fit indices suggested that the instrument measuring the dimensions of anxiety specific to college students in China was valid construct-wise and reliable for future use.

Book excerpt: Already the focus of much interest for 50 years, the study of foreign language learning anxiety (FLLA) still remains a popular research topic among scholars in Western countries. FLLA is believed to be an important cause of students’ “dumb English”. Considering the paucity of monographs on FLLA in China, this book represents an important step towards filling this gap. The author uses his PhD dissertation as a foundation for reviewing and discussing previous literature, as well as the current status of and major issues concerning FLLA worldwide. The book explores FLLA in China by using innovative triangulated research methodology, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods, namely surveys, focused interviews, and classroom observations. It also highlights the significance and implications of the research results and predicts the future of global FLLA research with a particular focus on China. Readers will discover the latest developments and issues concerning FLLA, causes of FLLA, and verified, effective strategies for alleviating such anxiety.

Book excerpt: English Language Learners (ELLs) who can write and read competently can fully participate in American schools, work environments and the society. However, ELLs face challenges while learning the English language. Anxiety is characterized as one of the issues impacting the learners’ accomplishment, which involves stages of communicative anxiety, fear of adverse assessment, test anxiety, and anxiety of English classroom. Moreover, anxiety is identified as being prevalent in the field of education and psychology as one factor that has negative influences in language acquisition (Hashemi, 2011). Studies have shown that there is a relationship between anxiety level and academic performance of ELLs. Factors such as language use, socioeconomic status, and parental education and their association with students’ performance on standardized tests are discussed. Theories and models that will allow students to build on previous encounters while acquiring new knowledge and applying skills to learn a second language are also discussed. This research is necessary to determine whether student’s anxiety level impacts performance in academics and learning English. The findings from this research could help teachers to decrease anxiety associated with learning a second language. Other researchers could use these findings to direct future investigations on challenges faced by ELLs. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of anxiety for counselors and other practitioners.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the level of foreign language anxiety in the classroom, plus the correlation between foreign language anxiety and cooperative learning attitudes and practice among university students at one university in the United States and three universities in Southern Taiwan. Two instruments (The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety scale by Horwitz et al., 1986 and the Style Analysis Survey by Oxford et al., 1999a) were employed along with ten questions designed by the author: five sought to establish student perceptions of their classrooms' cooperative atmosphere and five concerned students' predilection towards cooperative learning. No significant correlation was found between foreign language anxiety and cooperative learning at the United States University. Of the three Southern Taiwan colleges, results from only one school showed a significant correlation. This was the only school that had a Taiwanese teacher. Appended to this document is a Survey Instrument. (Contains 2 tables.).

Book excerpt: Does anxiety about learning and using a foreign language decline as learners become more competent in the target language, or is anxiety also relevant at higher levels of proficiency? This is the question Foreign Language Anxiety and the Advanced Language Learner sets out to explore. The aim of the book is to give readers an insight into what role anxiety plays in the language learning and communication processes of advanced language learners. Specifically, the study examines how advanced EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) can be characterized; how anxiety relates to other individual differences (cognitive, affective, personality); and explores the relationship between FLA and various aspects of learners’ performance and communication experience in the target language. The research context is Hungary. The findings, however, are not confined to the Hungarian EFL setting. In addition to making a contribution to the clarification of some unresolved issues in language anxiety research—including the role of proficiency in the development of anxiety, the relationship between anxiety and other learner variables, and the much-debated question of whether or not anxiety accounts for differential success in L2 learning—this study has important implications for language teachers as well.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of the Impact of Foreign Language Anxiety on Tertiary Students' Oral Performance submitted by Lowana Phillips for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Hong Kong August, 2005 Speaking in a foreign language class, especially in front of others, can be a significant anxiety inducing task for the language learner. Therefore it is important to consider how anxiety affects the foreign language learner. Although there is a large body of research on anxiety and speaking, the specific area of public speaking for Chinese learners of English is relatively untouched. This study investigates the impact that anxiety may have on the assessment of public speaking proficiency and on how students feel about their oral performance. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS; Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) was used to select four high anxiety and four low anxiety, tertiary-level students from four English language classes at the University of Hong Kong (N=62). The eight students gave stimulated recall and interview comments after watching their videoed presentations. Twelve FLCAS statements were selected as relevant to giving a presentation, and student responses to the selected statements were used as the basis for interview questions. Three different teachers graded each presentation. There were no significant correlations between grade and anxiety level. The highest and lowest grades were given to two high anxiety students with very similar levels of anxiety. However, there were significant differences between high and low anxiety students' perceptions of performance. Overall, the low anxiety students showed a more positive attitude towards giving a presentation in terms of foreign language learning attitude, speaking, and evaluation. The findings suggest that the relationship between foreign language anxiety and oral performance is not always clear cut, and that increased anxiety does not necessarily mean decreased oral proficiency. Despite this it may be necessary for foreign language teachers to be more aware of helping students make use of and reduce their anxieties, and help students improve their attitude towards language learning. Book excerpt: This research sought to examine the differences between students’ foreign language anxiety levels (high, moderate, low) and student achievement in different learning environments (traditional or distance learning) in a college setting. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was administered to students of Spanish and French at a community college in central Georgia. Foreign language achievement was measured using students' course final grades. This study was conducted using a causal-comparative design, and data were analyzed and interpreted using t tests and a one-way ANOVA. The results for the study showed that there were no significant differences in student achievement between traditional and distance learning foreign language classes, but there were significant differences in student achievement between students with different levels of foreign language anxiety. Also, there were significant differences in foreign language anxiety scores between students in traditional and distance learning foreign language classes. The results of the study add to the limited number of studies on foreign language anxiety across different learning environments of learning and can help teachers with pedagogical decisions to meet the needs of students with various characteristics in their classes.

Book excerpt: Foreign language anxiety (FLA) has long been a pervasive issue among second language learners even till now. There has been a considerable body of literature on foreign language anxiety since later years in the last century, and some research on context comparisons as well. Previous studies have found that language anxiety interacts with many learner variables such as gender, language achievements, overseas experience, self-confidence, motivation, beliefs, and willingness to communicate (WTC) and so on. For Chinese learners learning English as a foreign language (EFL), the construct is more prominent due to the Confucian heritage culture's (CHCs) influence. Aiming to understand the effect of contextual factor on FLA in language learning, this study launched an exploration comparing foreign language anxiety among current Chinese EFL students between China and New Zealand universities. A mixed methods research design was adopted in this study. A questionnaire comprising the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986; Park, 2014) and an additional enquiry for primary sources of anxiety was administered respectively to the samples of China (N=178) and New Zealand (N=88) contexts. The results showed that over half of participants in both contexts had varying degrees of language anxiety, but with distinct anxiety structures. The two groups of students differed significantly from each other in seven items. Students from both samples reported English listening and speaking, vocabulary, and low confidence as the key sources of their English anxiety, but they differed in various aspects subject to the major categories included. Generally speaking, language learning context did play a role in producing FLA of Chinese EFL learners. It was also found that regardless of learning context, language anxiety interfered with students' self-confidence in English proficiency. Implications for alleviating FLA as well as recommendations on future research were introduced.
