Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1994, takes a broad look at the reasons behind the failure of foreign banks to penetrate Japanese financial markets. It accepts the common argument that the Japanese bureaucracy has skilfully limited the scope of foreign banks and discusses at length the methods used to do so. However, in examining the history of foreign banking activity in Japan, it becomes clear that ineptitude on the part of the foreign banks and governments has also been a major factor.

Book Synopsis Cross-border Activity of Japanese Banks by : Mr.Waikei W. Lam
Download or read book Cross-border Activity of Japanese Banks written by Mr.Waikei W. Lam and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the determinants of Japanese banks’ overseas expansion and assesses whether the growing cross-border activity will continue under the new macroeconomic policies referred as “Abenomics”. The analysis finds that Japanese banks are well positioned to scale up foreign exposures, thanks to their relative resilient balance sheets and continued growth in the region. Stronger domestic growth in Japan could mitigate the pace, but is unlikely to reverse the expansion as global and regional pull-factors play a more prominent role in the growth of cross-border claims. Increasing cross-border activity could pose funding risks and supervisory challenges and require continued close monitoring.

Book Synopsis Growth Strategies for Foreign Banks in Japan by : Philip Huggenberger
Download or read book Growth Strategies for Foreign Banks in Japan written by Philip Huggenberger and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese banking environment is currently experiencing a phase of transformation, driven by economic, regulatory, and social factors. This transformation has led to unprecedented opportunities for foreign banks to enter and grow in the Japanese market. While many areas of banking provide interesting chances for growth, private banking / wealth management is exceptional, because the market as such has only just started to emerge in Japan. With their resources and competencies, developed in long tradition, foreign banks have good preconditions to become successful in the Japanese private banking market. Case study research based on 5 foreign banks shows how growth strategies are implemented in practice, and what the key elements of those strategies are. Insights from these "trial-and-error" approaches are rationalized with a systematic literature review and eventually molded into a holistic framework. That framework can be used as a point of reference for banks already in the market or banks thinking about entering, as well as to guide future research for in-depth analysis of selected aspects of private banking in Japan.

Book Synopsis Japanese Banking and Investment in the United States by : Peter Rose
Download or read book Japanese Banking and Investment in the United States written by Peter Rose and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-10-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines in detail the timely area of Japanese banking and investment activities in the United States, and offers a clear picture of both the causes of the recent growth of foreign investment activity and the consequences of this trend for American companies, households, and government agencies. Peter S. Rose argues that multiple factors have shaped the growing roles played by Japanese banks in the U.S. financial system and by Japanese investors in the U.S. economy, but remains optimistic that this is not necessarily a cause for alarm. Rose provides a detailed look at nearly every aspect of Japan's involvement in the U.S. financial sector, as well as offering a useful overview of the banking and financial system of Japan. Among the causes of Japanese expansion that Rose discusses are the rapid appreciation of the Japanese yen in international markets, Japan's large trade surpluses with the U.S., the high personal savings rate of the Japanese, periodically depressed U.S. stock prices, and the low barriers to entry into most U.S. markets. Also fully detailed are the consequences of possible reductions in Japanese financial activity, which could be felt in the U.S. through higher domestic interest rates, a reduction in the creation of new jobs, rising unemployment, reduced availability of long-term capital, and a slackening in the growth of U.S. output. This unique work will be an important reference tool for professionals in the banking, finance, and securities industries, for public policy makers and bank regulatory agencies, and for students and researchers of international banking and finance.
