Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the relationship between security and integration in Western Europe depends upon an enduring implicit bargain between the US and its European allies. Despite internal and external pressures to develop a European security and defence identity distinct from NATO in the 1980s and 1990s, EC member states have consistently rejected supranational integration in the areas of security and defence. Despite considerable European dissatisfaction with American leadership of NATO, Europe has continued to accept that leadership even after the end of the Cold War and the signing of the Maastricht Treaty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was published in 2003.How has NATO managed to survive and transform itself into a peace-enforcement organization? Challenging the dominant assumption that NATO intervened in the Balkans because of the threat that conflicts in the region posed to European security, this book develops a new set of research questions based on the hypothesis of the existence of "policy communities". The author demonstrates that there were shifting policy communities in operations that shaped the Alliance's transformation process, arguing that NATO would not have succeeded in assuming peace-enforcement tasks without other factors - ranging from organisational dynamics, domestic politics and the impact of ad hoc reactions to external events - coming into play. Highlighting the role of NATO as an actor in international security, this volume is aimed at academics and practitioners in the field of international relations

Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of how European development policy was shaped, this book explores the role of former colonial officials in shaping the policy agenda and explores this example of 'recycled empire.' Dimier argues that this post-colonial agenda only changed as a result of pressure from the OECD and World Bank in the 1980s and 1990s.

Book excerpt: The decision of the UK to ‘Leave’ the European Union (EU) was unexpected, and as a consequence the precise details of what would come next were left very unclear, and still today there is little certainty or agreement over what ‘Brexit’ will actually mean. It is within this context that this edited volume has been produced. The Commonwealth featured quite heavily in the referendum campaign, particularly on the ‘Leave’ side; claiming that a vote for Brexit would allow the UK to re-new and extend links with the countries of the Commonwealth. However, critics highlighted the potential limitations of a new bilateral link, and that in many instances the UK’s role is strengthened by its membership of the EU. The tension between aspiration and likely reality is a key theme of the volume. Another, is how the decision of the UK may have consequences across the Commonwealth in terms of both domestic policy and regional cooperation. In short, the volume shines a detailed light on the historical and contemporary nature of relations between the UK and the Commonwealth. Linked to this, and possibly of greatest utility, is the consideration of how policy should be formulated to best strengthen the relationship in the future. This book originally appeared as a special issue of The Round Table.

Book excerpt: Recent atrocities have ensured that terrorism and how to deal with terrorists legally and politically has been the subject of much discussion and debate on the international stage. This book presents a study of changes in the legal treatment of those perpetrating crimes of a political character over several decades. It most centrally deals with the political offence exception and how it has changed. The book looks at this change from an international perspective with a particular focus on the United States. Interdisciplinary in approach, it examines the fields of terrorism and political crime from legal, political science and criminological perspectives. It will be of interest to a broad range of academics and researchers, as well as to policymakers involved in creating new anti-terrorist policies.
