Book excerpt: "In 2008, the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) approved the formation of an interdisciplinary Working Group on Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish (WG-FCCIFS). This Working Group was designed to enagage the PICES and ICES scientific communities in an effort to discuss and assess our current understanding of the implications of climate change on marine fish and fisheries. The group was quite active, and the products of WG-FCCIFS include one major scientific symposium, a symposium volume and several peer reviewed journal articles. WG-FCCIFS's primary accomplishments and research findings are described in this report. The group promoted research on climate change impacts on marine ecosystems by scientists in PICES and ICES member countries through coordinated communication, exchange of methodology, and organization of meetings to discuss and publish results. In collaboration with relevant expert groups in PICES and ICES, WG-FCCIFS developed frameworks and methodologies for projecting the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on shifts in the distribution, abundance and production of commercial fish and shellfish. WG-FCCIFS members met to review the results of designated case studies to test methods. Given the limitations of our forecasts, they also explored techniques for estimating and communicating uncertainty in forecasts and strategies for research and management under climate change scenarios. As the 3-year term for WG-FCCIFS approached, it was clear that PICES and ICES were well positioned to serve as world leaders in advancing science on assessments of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems. This recognition led to the formaton of the ICES Strategic Initiative on Climate Change Effects on Marine Ecosystems (SICCME), referred to as the Section on Climate Change Effects on Marine Ecosystems (S-CCME) within PICES."--Executive summary.

Book Synopsis Relationships Between Climate, Growth and Fisheries Production in a Commercially Exploited Marine Fish by : Erin Marie Reed
Download or read book Relationships Between Climate, Growth and Fisheries Production in a Commercially Exploited Marine Fish written by Erin Marie Reed and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate variability can affect fish populations and fisheries production in numerous ways, including inducing measurable fluctuations in fish growth, condition, and fisheries production. Unfortunately, mechanisms driving these linkages are poorly understood for most exploited species, which hinders effective management. The purpose of this study was to use the Gulf Corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus), a heavily exploited marine fish in the Gulf of California, Mexico, as a model to investigate relationships between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as measured by the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI), sea surface temperature (SST), precipitation, drought as measured by the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), and river flow from the Morelos Dam with three parameters: adult fish condition, growth rate, and fisheries production. Adult fish condition was assessed by comparing annual variations in weight-length relationships of fish captured by the commercial fishery to each climate and environmental variable using an exponential model. Fish growth rate was measured using otolith chronologies for juveniles (years 0-2) and adult (years 3-10). Lastly, annual catch data from the commercial fishery was compared to each climate and environmental variable to examine relationships between climate and fisheries production. Results indicate that adult condition, juvenile growth rate and fisheries production are enhanced during El Niño conditions and increased SST. El Niño conditions during the birth year showed a positive relationship with fisheries landings at peak age of capture five years later, suggesting a possible linkage between juvenile recruitment, survivorship and future fisheries production. A weak positive relationship between river flow and growth rate in juveniles and adults was also found, which indicated that growth rate of both life history stages may be enhanced during strong El Niño years with high river flow. However, no relationship was found between precipitation and our parameters. Lastly, a positive relationship between decreased drought during the birth year and fisheries landings five years later indicated a freshwater influence on fisheries production. Our results indicate climate variability acting through El Niño events has a positive effect on growth, condition, fisheries production, and potentially juvenile recruitment suggesting the importance of both ocean climate variability and freshwater input on the Gulf Corvina.
Book Synopsis Climate Variability, Climate Change and Fisheries by : Michael H. Glantz
Download or read book Climate Variability, Climate Change and Fisheries written by Michael H. Glantz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-07 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of the twentieth century, public and scientific attention is focusing increasingly on the detection and assessment of changes in our environment. This unique volume addresses the potential implications of global warming for fisheries and the societies which depend on them. Using a 'forecasting by analogy' approach, which draws upon experiences from the recent past in coping with regional fluctuations in the abundance or availability of living marine resources, it is shown how we might be able to assess our ability to respond to the consequences of future environmental changes induced by a potential global warming. The book takes the form of a series of integrated case studies from around the globe, which are presented by an interdisciplinary group of leading researchers. This important and thought-provoking volume will be of interest to a wide range of scientists working in the fields of biology, marine and environmental science, climatology, economics and anthropology, as well as resource managers and policy makers concerned with the health and future of living marine resources.
Book Synopsis Advancing the Science of Climate Change by : National Research Council
Download or read book Advancing the Science of Climate Change written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-10 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for-and in many cases is already affecting-a broad range of human and natural systems. The compelling case for these conclusions is provided in Advancing the Science of Climate Change, part of a congressionally requested suite of studies known as America's Climate Choices. While noting that there is always more to learn and that the scientific process is never closed, the book shows that hypotheses about climate change are supported by multiple lines of evidence and have stood firm in the face of serious debate and careful evaluation of alternative explanations. As decision makers respond to these risks, the nation's scientific enterprise can contribute through research that improves understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change and also is useful to decision makers at the local, regional, national, and international levels. The book identifies decisions being made in 12 sectors, ranging from agriculture to transportation, to identify decisions being made in response to climate change. Advancing the Science of Climate Change calls for a single federal entity or program to coordinate a national, multidisciplinary research effort aimed at improving both understanding and responses to climate change. Seven cross-cutting research themes are identified to support this scientific enterprise. In addition, leaders of federal climate research should redouble efforts to deploy a comprehensive climate observing system, improve climate models and other analytical tools, invest in human capital, and improve linkages between research and decisions by forming partnerships with action-oriented programs.

Download or read book North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment written by Markus Quante and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evaluation and review process similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of our changing climate, discussing a wide range of topics including past, current and future climate change, and climate-related changes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It also explores the impact of climate change on socio-economic sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, coastal zone management, coastal protection, urban climate, recreation/tourism, offshore activities/energy, and air pollution.
