Book excerpt: Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893) is known predominantly for his close association, from 1848, with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and for his masterpiece, "The last of England" (1852-5), with its poignant imagery of a young emigrant couple taking their last sight of home-portraits of the artist himself and his wife. This fully illustrated catalogue provides the first complete coverage of all of Madox Brown's work. All aspects of his documented work, extant or lost, are presented in this magnificent catalogue, which includes a section on Madox Brown's frame designs (by Lynn Roberts). The artist's diary and his largely unpublished correspondence with associates and patrons provide a fascinating insight into his ideas and plan of work. A tour de force of scholarship, this book will be of immense value to scholars of nineteenth-century British art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive history devoted to the art of Ford Madox Brown (1821-93), in which his paintings establish him as a major figure in the most important new art movement of Victorian England, Pre-Raphaelitism. The book presents a new explanation of the development and basic aims of Pre-Raphaelite art as a whole and offers a revealing discussion of the power and importance of the humor and negative spirit that run throughout Brown's work. It also ties Brown's realist approach to British decorative taste at midcentury and redefines his place in the Aesthetic Movement, a cultural trend that dominated the latter half of the nineteenth century. In addition, the artist's socialist leanings and nationalistic tendencies, expressed in depictions of workers, children, women, and religious scenes, are set out more fully than in any previous literature on the artist.

Book excerpt: Ford Madox Brown (1821 - 1893) was a French-born British painter of moral and historical subjects, notable for his distinctively graphic and often Hogarthian version of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Arguably, his most notable painting was Work (1852-65). Brown spent the latter years of his life painting the Manchester Murals, depicting Mancunian history, for Manchester Town Hall.He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840, a work inspired by Lord Byron's poem The Giaour and then completed a version of The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, with his cousin and future wife Elisabeth Bromley as one of his models. He lived in Montmartre with his new wife and aging father in 1841. He painted Manfred on the Jungfrau, inspired by Lord Byron's poem Manfred while he was in Paris. In 1843 he submitted work to the Westminster Cartoon Competition, for compositions to decorate the new Palace of Westminster. His entry, The Body of Harold Brought before William, was not successful. His early works were, however, greatly admired by the young Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who asked him to become his tutor. Through Rossetti, Brown came into contact with the artists who went on to form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Though closely linked to them, he was never actually a member of the brotherhood itself, but adopted the bright colours and realistic style of William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. He was also influenced by the works of Holbein that he saw in Basel in 1845, and by Friedrich Overbeck and Peter Cornelius, whom he met in Rome in 1845-46.Brown struggled to make his mark in the 1850s, with his paintings failing to find buyers, and he considered emigrating to India. Brown found patrons in the north of England, including Plint, George Rae from Birkenhead, John Miller from Liverpool, and James Leathart from Newcastle. By the late 1850s he had lost patience with the poor reception he received at the Royal Academy and ceased to show his works there, rejecting an offer from Millais to support his becoming an associate member. He founded the Hogarth Club in 1858, with William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, and his former pupil Rossetti. After a successful period of a few years, the club reached over 80 members, including several prominent members of the Royal Academy, but Brown resigned in 1860, and the club collapsed in 1861.From the 1860s, Brown also designed furniture and stained glass. He was a founder partner of William Morris's design company, Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., in 1861, which dissolved in 1874 with Morris continuing on his own. He was a close friend of the landscape artist Henry Mark Anthony.Brown's major achievement after Work was The Manchester Murals, a cycle of twelve paintings in the Great Hall of Manchester Town Hall depicting the history of the city. Brown would be 72 by the time he finished the murals. In total, he took six years perfecting the murals, which were his last major work.

Book excerpt: Ford Madox Brown's fascinating realist painting Work takes as its heroes a group of labourers laying water pipes in The Mount, Hampstead. They are surrounded by a variety of picturesque characters representing the different classes and occupations of Victorian society, including two intellectuals - Thomas Carlyle and the Rev F. D. Maurice, whose ideas are crucial to the painting's meaning. This fully illustrated book tells the story behind Brown's masterpiece - its sources in popular art, its composition and its 'message', as well as its critical reception at the time and its impact on art in the twentieth century. Walker also examines the history of Hampstead in the 1850s, the wider issues of conflict and ideas in Victorian Britain and the social history of London with its cast of navvies, urchins and street vendors, philosophers, reformers and idlers

Book excerpt: Madox Brown, who grew up in France and Belgium before he came to England and won fame with paintings like 'The Last of England', was always an outsider, and the women he loved also burst out of stereotypes. His two wives, Elisabeth Bromley and Emma Hill, and his secret passions, the artist Marie Spartali and the author Mathilde Blind, were all remarkable personalities, from very different backgrounds. Their striving for self-expression, in an age that sought to suppress them, tells us much more about women's journey towards modern roles. Their lives - full of passion, sexual longing, tragedy and determination - take us from the English countryside and the artist's studio to a Europe in turmoil and revolution. These are not silent muses hidden in the shadow of a 'Master'. They step out of the shadows and into the picture, speaking with voices we can hear and understand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marriage of William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919) and Lucy Madox Brown (1843-1894) united two of the most resonant Pre-Raphaelite family names. Their passionate and ultimately tragic relationship - described here for the first time - provides a fresh perspective on nineteenth-century marriage and on the private lives of eminent Victorians. Sibling of Dante Gabriel and Christina Rossetti, William was one of the original Pre-Raphaelite 'Brothers,' a Bohemian, radical author, poet, critic, artist, connoisseur, biographer, historian, and taxman. Lucy, the intense, intellectual daughter of Ford Madox Brown, was an ambitious artist and biographer of Mary Shelley in spite of struggling with tuberculosis for nearly a decade. Drawing on hundreds of previously unpublished sources and a wealth of new visual material (including art by William, Lucy, and others of their circle and striking contemporary photographs), the book follows William and Lucy through their separate professional careers, marriage, continental travels, and Lucy’s illness and death. At the crossover between art history, literary criticism, social history, and biography, the book rewrites Pre-Raphaelite history and brings to life two fascinating people who were both of their time and ahead of it.
