Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vol. draws together records documenting a little known diplomatic effort to establish peace along the war-torn Appalachian frontier during the spring, summer, & fall of 1760. Assembled here is a representative sample of the council minutes, speeches, letters of correspondence, warrants, inventories, passports, journals, diaries, & other types of records documenting a frontier diplomatic mission of the period. These records reveal something of the range & diversity of documentary materials available to scholars interested in reconstructing diplomatic events along a distant frontier during a critical period of Am. history. Individually, they document political maneuvers & details of everyday life, many of which are recorded nowhere else. Collectively, they provide additional keys to understand better how Indians & colonists shaped a new diplomatic landscape along the Penna. frontier after the Brit. succeeded in breaking French power in N. Am. in 1760.

Book excerpt: The resource transfer problem (RTP) is a modeling and solution framework for integrated complex scheduling and rich vehicle routing problems. It allows the modeling of a wide variety of scheduling problems, vehicle routing problems, their combination with integrated problems, as well as various specific requirements and restrictions arising in practical scheduling and vehicle routing. Based on the unifying resource transfer problem framework, this book proposes a generic constraint propagation approach that exploits the specific structure of scheduling and routing problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of modelling systems using graph theory has its origin in several scientific areas: in statistical physics (the study of large particle systems), in genetics (studying inheritable properties of natural species), and in interactions in contingency tables. The use of graphical models in statistics has increased considerably over recent years and the theory has been greatly developed and extended. This book provides the first comprehensive and authoritative account of the theory of graphical models and is written by a leading expert in the field. It contains the fundamental graph theory required and a thorough study of Markov properties associated with various type of graphs. The statistical theory of log-linear and graphical models for contingency tables, covariance selection models, and graphical models with mixed discrete-continous variables in developed detail. Special topics, such as the application of graphical models to probabilistic expert systems, are described briefly, and appendices give details of the multivarate normal distribution and of the theory of regular exponential families. The author has recently been awarded the RSS Guy Medal in Silver 1996 for his innovative contributions to statistical theory and practice, and especially for his work on graphical models.

Below the beauty of a rose, exists a thorn of atrocious evil!” The Dark Hill was a cursed place, a symbol of hostility! This unscathed territory was shrouded in mystery. No one had set foot inside its borders for centuries, until a group of curious young children accidentally wandered into this ghostly site, to find out that it was actually the exact opposite of what people perceived it to be! It was astoundingly beautiful! The children had never seen anything like this before, but little did they know, that below this curtain of beauty, lay a malicious evil. The Dark Hill had brought to them an adventure filled with mysteries and a lot of danger. There was a ton at stake, and it all fell down on these children. Read on as this adventure unfolds before your eyes!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book develops, using only the ideas of basic quantum chemistry (e.g. perturbation and symmetry theory), a fundamental conceptual and theoretical framework for chemical reactivity. By feeding the role of symmetry and chemical group topology directly into the development, the analysis generates and explains the successful features of simpler reactivity theories (e.g. frontier orbital theory, the isolobal concept, PMO theory, the Woodward-Hoffmann rules), as well as defines their limitations. The unifying construct is that of a group-resolved correlation diagram, which is shown to represent the formal quantization of the electron arrow, replacing the concept of classical point electrons moving between groups with the concept of quantum electron matter waves which evolve with the evolving nuclear and chemical group structure. The use of the concept of chemical groups (functional group system, substituents, solvents) is central to the development, localising the evolutionary electrons within the functional groups and leading to an isolation and analytic definition of substituent and solvent (catalytic) effects as explicit functions of the reaction coordinate. Each archetypical reaction family is represented by fully-worked examples: viz. aliphatic nucleophilic substitution, aromatic electrophilic substitution, inorganic rearrangements, electrocyclic additions, Diels-Alder additions and addition stages in chiral reactions.
