No account is taken of the value of the forage crop in improving the productive capacity of the soil by preventing erosion, or of the return of nutrients to the soil in the form of animal wastes and bedding. The bulletin covers forage quality, moisture content at harvesting, types of forage crops, amount consumed by various types of livestock, how forage meets nutritional requirements, processing hay for growing beef steers, and feeding and finishing beef calves and heifers on forage-based rations.
