Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isabella Lilias Trotter (1853-1928) was an artist and a missionary for over 38 years to the Muslims of Algeria. John Ruskin, the famous art critic, didn't believe that ladies could paint before he met Lilias. He changed his mind after he met her and believed that if she would give her life to painting she could become the greatest painter of the nineteenth century. Ruskin believed that if she would devote herself to art "she would be the greatest living painter and do things that would be immortal. " He was unhappy that she was spending so much time on the streets of London, helping with the YWCA, when he thought she ought to be painting. Lilias, however, decided to give up her career in art in order to serve God. She always remained a good friend of Ruskin's though, and they wrote many letters when she was in Algeria. She also wrote several books - beautifully illustrated by herself, including: Parables of the Cross (1894), Parables of the Christ-Life (1899), and a book for Sufi Muslims, The Way of the Sevenfold Secret.

Book excerpt: Art critic John Ruskin enthusiastically proclaimed her potential as one of the best artists of the nineteenth century, but Lilias Trotter's devotion to Christ compelled her to surrender her life of art, privilege, and leisure. Leaving the home of her wealthy parents for a humble dwelling in Algeria, Lilias defied sterotypes and taboos that should have deterred any European woman from ministering in a Muslim country. Yet she stayed for nearly forty years, befriending Algerian Muslims with her appreciation for literature and art and winning them to Christ through her life of love.

Book excerpt: Must we stumble through sorrow and tragedy without understanding or is there a lighted way--a path--through suffering? Elisabeth Elliot plots the treacherous passage through pain, grief, and loss a journey most of us will make many times in our life. Through it all, she says, there is only one reliable path, and if you walk it, you will see the transformation of all your losses, heartbreaks, and tragedies into something strong and purposeful. In this powerful moving book, Elisabeth Elliot does not hesitate to ask hard questions, to examine tenderly the hurts we suffer, and to explore boldly the nature of God whose sovereign care for us is so intimate and perfect that he confounds our finite understanding. A Path through Suffering is a book for anyone searching for faith, comfort, and assurance.

Book excerpt: 40 inspirational reflections exquisitely illustrated-for personal or group contemplation."During a visit to Venice in 1876, the mother of Lilias Trotter heard that John Ruskin, then fifty-seven, was in the city to work on drawings and to revise his book of 1851-53, The Stones of Venice. Carefully drafting a letter of introduction, she must have hoped that Lilias might receive some instruction in drawing or at least some general commendation from the foremost writer on art of his day. Probably she was expecting no more than that, although there would have been the obvious excitement of personal contact with one of the most famous people in the English-speaking world. Having given 'somewhat sulky permission,' Ruskin was surprised to see 'extremely rightminded and careful work,' and asked 'that the young lady might be allowed to come out sketching with me.' 'She seemed to learn everything the instant she was shown it,' he recalled, 'and ever so much more than she was taught.'"Stephen Wildman, Professor of History of Art, Lancaster University, Director, Ruskin Library and Research Centre

Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Lilias: A Novel This is the story of a woman who, like many another, in the mere foolishness and exuberance of her youth, dreaded nothing so much as the uniform monotony of a too well-known path; preferring to explore unbeaten tracks in search of wider horizons and pastures yet unknown. A woman who, in spite of many imperfections, won for herself much love; who in after-days would have annotate the Litany, adding to it a special clause, 'From the sins of youth and from the beguiling subtlety of our own will we would fain be delivered' - for she wrote these words in the margin of her Prayer-book, and signed them, not with her old, but with her new name. 'Of course I knew it must be Marjory! - no one else in their sober senses would display such exquisite wisdom as to sit dreaming on an open bench in a public road, with a delicious east wind blowing freely round her; only youth could indulge in such folly with impunity on a March day!' These words, spoken in a keen, incisive voice, might have been endorsed by the few passers-by, who one and all had cast wondering glances on the girl, who sat with her eyes fixed on the white dusty road in front of her - so lost in abstraction that the well-known tone of a friend made her start and change colour. 'Of course I knew it must be that wise woman Marjory!' repeated the voice, with aggravating and condemnatory calmness. 'And of course no one else but you, Mr. Frere, would have followed me with the express purpose of saying disagreeable things,' replied the girl, with an annoyed air. Book excerpt: In this young adult horror novel, a girl staying on a remote island suspects the tiny Victoria-era dolls in her family’s old mansion are up to murder. When her best friend dies under mysterious circumstances, Sophie sets off to stay with her cousins on the remote Isle of Skye. It’s been years since she last saw them—brooding Cameron with his scarred hand; Piper, who seems too perfect to be real; and peculiar little Lilias with her fear of bones. Still, Sophie never expected the strange new rules the family now lives by: Make no mention of Cameron’s accident. Never leave the front gate unlocked. Above all, don’t speak of the girl who’s no longer there, the sister whose death might have closer ties to Sophie’s past—and more sinister consequences for her future—than she ever knew. A wondrously haunting and modern thriller, Frozen Charlotte drips with mystery and madness, secrets and survival, and the chilling sense that the impossible might be all too real. “Teens looking for a novel to keep them up at night will find it in this one.” —School Library Journal “Gothic ghosts combine with crime for a fast read.” —Kirkus
