Book excerpt: Excerpt from For Better Relations With Our Latin American Neighbors: A Journey to South America No small part of the work of the Division of Intercourse and Education of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is done through the medium of international visits by representative men. Experience has already confirmed the reasonable assumption that such visits are useful, and in high degree helpful, in building up a spirit of international friendship and in developing international understanding. A careful reading of Mr. Robert Bacon's Report of the details of his trip to South America in the summer and autumn of 1913 will show precisely how such visits as his contribute to the peace and good order of the world. National ideals and national policies are carefully and sympathetically explained, not only to leading personalities in the countries visited, but also to large and representative audiences of teachers, merchants and men of affairs. The newspaper press is almost uniformly interested and helpful on occasions of this kind, and the visitor of distinction and of public service at home is made cordially and warmly welcome. It is in high degree important to multiply such visits on the part of representative men in the various American republics. The barrier of language will be broken down, or surmounted, as a knowledge of English becomes more widespread in the South American countries, and as the ability to read, to speak and to write Spanish increases in the United States. Bonds of a common interest in finance and in commerce are already being forged between the peoples of the several American republics. These bonds will be followed and strengthened by others in due time. There will thus be developed a genuine American public opinion and a genuine American understanding and point of view, that will be common alike to the people of the United States and to those of the other republics to the south. In order that Mr. Bacon's Report may most effectively accomplish its purpose, it is now published in two editions, an English edition for circulation among English speaking people, and a Spanish and Portuguese edition for circulation in Latin America. Book Synopsis Americans All by : Darlene J. Sadlier
Download or read book Americans All written by Darlene J. Sadlier and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural diplomacy—“winning hearts and minds” through positive portrayals of the American way of life—is a key element in U.S. foreign policy, although it often takes a backseat to displays of military might. Americans All provides an in-depth, fine-grained study of a particularly successful instance of cultural diplomacy—the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs (CIAA), a government agency established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 and headed by Nelson A. Rockefeller that worked to promote hemispheric solidarity and combat Axis infiltration and domination by bolstering inter-American cultural ties. Darlene J. Sadlier explores how the CIAA used film, radio, the press, and various educational and high-art activities to convince people in the United States of the importance of good neighbor relations with Latin America, while also persuading Latin Americans that the United States recognized and appreciated the importance of our southern neighbors. She examines the CIAA’s working relationship with Hollywood’s Motion Picture Society of the Americas; its network and radio productions in North and South America; its sponsoring of Walt Disney, Orson Welles, John Ford, Gregg Toland, and many others who traveled between the United States and Latin America; and its close ties to the newly created Museum of Modern Art, which organized traveling art and photographic exhibits and produced hundreds of 16mm educational films for inter-American audiences; and its influence on the work of scores of artists, libraries, book publishers, and newspapers, as well as public schools, universities, and private organizations.
Book Synopsis Argentina and the United States 1810-1960 by : Harold F. Peterson
Download or read book Argentina and the United States 1810-1960 written by Harold F. Peterson and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1964-01-01 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Peterson's book is the first, in English or Spanish, to encompass the entire sweep of Argentine-American relations from the time of Argentina's revolt against Spain in 1810 to the close of its 150th year of independence. Through comprehensive analysis and narrative, this study illuminates one of the most enigmatic areas of Western Hemisphere relationships. From what would seem to be a bewildering array of incidents, Professor Peterson isolates the basic undercurrents which mold Argentine policies. Internally, Argentina's path to stability is shown to be marred by developing social stratification and conflict, economic mismanagement, and the deep uncertainty of shifts from dictatorship to democracy. Internationally, the germs of discord with the United States are found in nationalism, anticolonialism, desire for hemispheric leadership, and economic competition. Discussed, too, are the fascinating, crucial weaknesses and errors of human leadership in both countries. Argentina and the United States 1810-1960 makes an important contribution to an understanding of current, as well as historical, affairs: it greatly helps to explain why in the twentieth century the government and people of the United States frequently face an "Argentine problem."
