Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed by The First Panchen Lama (1567-1662) and translated by Geshe Michael Roach. This selection of exquisite poetry by Lobsang Chukyi Gyeltsen comes from his biography as it appears in the classic work on the lives of the masters of the Lam Rim lineage written by Yongdzin Yeshe Gyeltsen, tutor to His Holiness the Eighth Dalai Lama. Much of the poetry here was never included in the First Panchen Lama’s traditional collected works, but has rather been taken from a secret tradition of chanting his poems at the tantric college located in his monastery of Tashi Lhunpo. The poems were written throughout his long life, starting from the age of 14, and they convey his inner progress in developing the steps of the path to Enlightenment. They also illustrate the manner in which he conducted his life and practice in the external world. In that sense, these poems are a real example for us to follow, and this selection was made to relate to particular steps of the path that we ourselves are working on.

Tessa Morris-Suzuki travels from Harbin in the north to Busan in the south, and on to the mysterious Diamond Mountains, which lie at the heart of the Korean Peninsula's crisis. As she follows in the footsteps of a remarkable writer, artist, and feminist who traced the route a century ago—in the year when Korea became a Japanese colony—her saga reveals an unseen face of China and the two Koreas: a world of monks, missionaries, and smugglers; of royal tombs and socialist mausoleums; a world where today's ideological confrontations are infused with myth and memory. Northeast Asia is poised at a moment of profound change as the rise of China is transforming the global order and tensions run high on the Korean Peninsula, the last Cold War divide. Probing the deep past of this region, To the Diamond Mountains offers a new and unexpected perspective on its present and future.

Book excerpt: Looking back at my life, one thing stands out, the struggle. Learning how to make do with a little of nothing and be thankful for the crumbs from others table was hard. I grew up in a harsh environment. There was physical, mental, and sexual abuse. This type of environment teaches you to use the most primal survival skills. I remember watching mom get up at three o'clock in the morning everyday to walk to work. She worked at the Columbus city courthouse. No matter the weather she was always there. Every day like clockwork she was there regardless of the weather getting it in. I remember seeing her wrap her hands in old socks to stay warm. Her shoes were running over from walking so many miles. I didn't understand at first, but time and error have shown me that she did what she knew to do for her children. It was her way of showing us she loved us the only way she knew how. I ended up doing the same thing for my children, following in her footsteps. Just like we took mom for granted my children did the same to me, take me for granted. I worked to provide a better life than I was able to afford as a child. My mom showed me that having children was a full-time job that you wanted to do, because the reward was priceless. The heartache and pain of a childbirth was only a prelude of what was to come, yet it's more than worth the indescribable joy and pride. When you can see how well they turn out. July twenty-fifth nineteen eighty, I found a reason to live and to strive. His name is Alandrew Ed Rodrick Jones, He was five ponds and three ounces, red wrinkled and squirming. The true beginning of my adult journey. I wasn't alone anymore. I had someone to love me.

Wherever the rivers flowed, the Buddha would be there.’ In Old Path White Clouds, the world's revered master of mindfulness, Thich Nhat Hanh, retells the story of the Buddha in his own inimitably beautiful style. He draws upon Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese sources to trace the Buddha’s life slowly and gently through the course of eighty years. Seen partly through the eyes of the Buddha himself and partly through those of Svasti, the buffalo boy, Old Path White Clouds brings the Buddha closer to us as we journey with him on his path to enlightenment and nirvana.
