Book excerpt: In a remote corner of the West Australian goldfields, two old prospectors watch from the veranda of a pub as a familiar vehicle speeds from the desert horizon and skids to a halt before them. A man climbs out and rushes wild-eyed into the front bar, a small bag held guardedly in one hand. He roughly demands a carton of beer then during a fumbling attempt to pay for it drops the bag and out tumble several rich specimens of gold. He frantically gathers them up, storms out of the room and then speeds away in his vehicle again. Less than an hour later he is found dead in it, the victim of a mystifying car crash. Stunned by the man's behaviour and what they've seen fall out of the bag, when the two old timers later learn of their fellow prospector's death their thoughts inevitably turn to finding the gold's source. But for one of those men, part Aborigine Reg Arnold, something he experiences whilst seated alone on the pub veranda not long after the man's departure will re-awaken another quest. For him the search for the gold will become part of a journey of the spirit that will ultimately connect with one begun after a murderous incident over ninety years before. A troubled teenaged grandson from the city soon joins him, other searchers too, as word about the gold gets out and the hunt for it turns into a race. Gradually, their footprints merge with those of the past, each possessed in a different way but all guided by the influence that sent a terrified prospector racing out of the desert and carrying its glistening message into the pub.

Book excerpt: How to interpret meteorological measurements made at a given level over a surface with regard to characteristic properties such as roughness, albedo, heat, moisture, carbon dioxide, and other gases is an old question which goes back to the very beginnings of modern micrometeorology. It is made even more challenging when it is unclear whether these measurements are only valid for this point/region and precisely describe the conditions there, or if they are also influenced by surrounding areas. After 50 years of field experiments, it has become both apparent and problematic that meteorological measurements are influenced from surfaces on the windward side. As such, extending these measurements for inhomogeneous experimental sites requires a quantitative understanding of these influences. When combined with atmospheric transport models similar to air pollution models, the ‘footprint’ concept – a fundamental approach introduced roughly 20 years ago – provides us with information on whether or not the condition of upwind site homogeneity is fulfilled. Since these first models, the development of more scientifically based versions, validation experiments and applications has advanced rapidly. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of these developments, to analyze present deficits, to describe applications and to advance this topic at the forefront of micrometeorological research.

Book excerpt: Nocturnes and interiors in the key of blue from the acclaimed painter Matthew Wong Over the course of his brief career, Matthew Wong was celebrated for his paintings evoking diverse historical references ranging from Chinese scroll painting to Van Gogh and Vuillard. His colorful, dappled vignettes of imaginary landscapes and half-remembered interiors have the uncanny ability to, in his words, "activate nostalgia, both personal and collective." This first museum publication features more than 60 of Wong's deeply evocative blue paintings, of intimate interior scenes and luscious nocturnal landscapes, from his Blue Series made between 2017 and 2019. Wong's Blue Series paintings are notable for their saturated and richly varied blue palette and pervasive sense of melancholy, enhanced by solitary figures. The striking compositions reflect Wong's technique of flattening the depth of space between the foreground and background with deft combinations of wet and dry brushwork. From monumental oils on canvas to smaller gouache and watercolor paintings, this body of work reveals Wong's intimate and intense meditations on blue that is, as essayist Nancy Spector writes, "as much a mood as it is a color." With an introduction by Julian Cox, essays by Spector and Winnie Wong, and a chronology, this publication brings together scholarly voices to provide fresh insight and perspective on Wong's work and his short-lived but exceptionally brilliant career. Matthew Wong (1984-2019) was a self-taught Canadian artist, who held his first US solo exhibition at Karma in March 2018, garnering reviews in the New York Times and the New Yorker, among others. His work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Book excerpt: George Steinberger (1865-1904) lived a relatively brief life, and during those years he suffered much, as the reader will clearly discern in this book. However, God's grace taught and sustained this thirsty-hearted follower of the Lamb in the midst of many difficulties. Suffering can either make us or break us; Steinberger chose to take the former route. He lived by the truth of 1 Peter 5:10: "But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you." While this is a relatively small volume, it is packed with divine truth, written by a master of the devotional life. The book must be read and reread slowly, allowing the Spirit of God to penetrate one's heart with this biblically-based truth. As Christians, we are exhorted to "imitate the faith" of those worthies who have gone before us (Heb. 13:8). The faith of George Steinberger is worthy to be imitated, as he challenges us to "follow the Lamb wherever He goes (Rev. 14:4).Ole Hallesby, author of the classic volume "Prayer," said about this book: "I know of no devotional book that I have reread so many times. It is to an unusual degree filled with words of eternal life. Though many years of bitter suffering, its author learned to see the Savior as the Lamb of God and himself to walk the pathway 'in the footprints of the Lamb."

Book excerpt: Agroecological footprints are a unique and popular concept for sustainable food system. Measuring and keeping a tab on the agroecological footprints of various human activities has gained remarkable interest in the past decade. From a range of human activities, food production and agriculture are most essential as well as extremely dependent on the agroecosystems. It is therefore crucial to understand the interaction of agroecosystem constituents with the extensive agricultural practices. The environmental impact measured in terms of agroecological footprints for a healthy for the sustainable food system. The editors critically examine the status of agroecological footprints and how it can be maintained within sustainable limits. Drawing upon research and examples from around the world, the book is offering an up-to-date account, and insight into how agroecology can be implemented as a solution in the form of eco-friendly practices that would boost up the production, curbs the environmental impacts, improves the bio-capacity, and reduces the agroecological footprints. It further discusses the changing status of the agroecological footprints and the growth of other footprint tools and types, such as land, water, carbon, nitrogen, etc. This book will be of interest to teachers, researchers, government planners, climate change scientists, capacity builders, and policymakers. Also, the book serves as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate students of agriculture, agroforestry, agroecology, soil science, and environmental sciences. National and international agricultural scientists, policymakers will also find this to be useful to achieve the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’.

Millions of television viewers on Earth watched breathlessly as he then became the first man to set foot on the Moon. This amazing achievement was years, even centuries, in the making. The Moon and the heavens have intrigued mankind since ancient times. FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON chronicles the spirit and determination of visionaries from Galileo to John F. Kennedy, whose dream of reaching the Moon was finally and superbly realized through the efforts of the Apollo missions. With a compelling and thoroughly researched text, the great vision of the scientists, engineers, and astronauts who struggled to make the dream a reality is brought into sharp focus. The book brings to light great triumphs and tragedies. Readers will learn about the years of determination, experimentation, and risk that gave rise to many space explorations, including 17 Apollo missions. Today the Moon is less of a mystery than in ancient times, but it is still a wonder. Breathtaking photographs--many from NASA--portray the indescribable beauty of outer space, the Moon, and the wonder of mankind's inspiring vision.

As Megan Biesele writes in her Foreword: The fact that a family of trained linguists and their associates sat down between 1870 and 1884 with a group of /Xam people who had been temporarily sprung free of imprisonment in Cape Town's Breakwater Prison has immense potential consequences. San people today, like indigenous peoples all over the world, are quietly organizing educational futures for themselves which will make fine use of this record of the intellectual history of their culture. This edition reproduces the English text of the 1911 edition and is richly illustrated with photographs.
