Book excerpt: Foothold in the Heavens, the second volume in the A History of Human Space Exploration series, focuses upon the 1970s, the decade in which humanity established real, longterm foothold in the heavens with the construction and operation of the first space stations. It marked a transitional phase between the heady, race-to-the-Moon days of the Sixties and efforts to make space travel more economical, more frequent and more 'routine.' Space exploration in the Seventies, although dominated by Soviet achievement, saw the first efforts of mankind to really 'live' and work in space, producing results of direct benefit to humans on Earth. The emphasis changed from the gung-ho, 'strap-it-on-and-go' pioneers of the Sixties to the more practical exploitation of space for science, medicine, and technology. This book focuses on each mission launched between April 1971 and April 1981: from the launch of the world's first space station to the end of operations of Salyut 6, and from the expanded, lengthy exploration of the Moon on Apollo 15 to the first flight of the Shuttle.

Book Synopsis Where are the Dead? by : Peter Moore
Download or read book Where are the Dead? written by Peter Moore and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where are the dead? What are they doing? What kind of a process is dying? What relationships exist among the dead themselves, and between the dead and those in the world they have left behind? Modern philosophers argue that the idea of disembodied survival - to which many believers pay lip service - is incoherent, and that there can be evidence neither for nor against something incoherent. By contrast, this book argues, the idea of an embodied survival (albeit a form of embodiment differing from our present embodiment) makes perfect sense in itself and fits much better with the alleged evidence for post-mortem survival. Exploring post-mortem survival, Where are the Dead? uses a variety of empirical data, alongside mythological, legendary and purely fictional material, to illustrate how the less familiar idea of embodied post-mortem survival might actually ’work’ in some real afterlife environment. By asking questions about the nature and whereabouts of the afterlife, and about what it might be like to be dead, the book explores themes nowadays relatively neglected even in disciplines explicitly concerned with ideas about death, dying and life after death.

Book Synopsis Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table by : Louie Giglio
Download or read book Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table written by Louie Giglio and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louie Giglio helps you find encouragement, hope, and strength in the midst of any valley as you reject the enemy voices of fear, rage, lust, insecurity, anxiety, despair, temptation, or defeat. Scripture is clear: the Enemy is a liar who will stop at nothing to tempt you into poor decisions and self-defeating mindsets, making you feel afraid, angry, anxious, or defeated. It is all too easy for Satan to weasel his way into a seat at the table intended for only you and your King. But you can fight back. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table outlines the ways to overcome those lies so you can find peace and security in any challenging circumstance or situation. With the same bold, exciting approach to Scripture as employed in Goliath Must Fall and his other previous works, pastor Louie Giglio examines Psalm 23 in fresh ways, highlighting verse 5: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." You can find freedom from insecurity, temptation, and defeat--if you allow Jesus, the Shepherd, to lead the battle for your mind and heart. This spiritual warfare book for those who are leery of spiritual warfare books will resonate with Louie's core Passion tribe as well as with Christians of all ages who want to live a triumphant life in God.
Download or read book Heaven written by Christopher W. Morgan and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our culture has a lot to say about heaven. But too much of it is based more on imaginative speculation or "supernatural" experiences than on the Bible itself. In the latest addition to the Theology in Community series, Christopher Morgan and Robert Peterson have assembled an interdisciplinary team of evangelical scholars to explore the doctrine of heaven from a variety of angles. Among other contributors, Ray Ortlund examines the concept of heaven in the Old Testament, Gerald Bray explores the history of theological reflection about heaven, and Ajith Fernando looks at persecuted saints' special relationship to heaven in the New Testament. This team of first rate scholars offers modern readers a comprehensive overview of this often misunderstood topic—shedding biblical light on the eternal hope of all Christians. Part of the Theology in Community series.
Book Synopsis Heaven’s Wrath by : D. L. Noorlander
Download or read book Heaven’s Wrath written by D. L. Noorlander and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heaven's Wrath explores the religious thought and religious rites of the early Dutch Atlantic world. D. L. Noorlander argues that the Reformed Church and the West India Company forged and maintained a close union, with considerable consequences across the seventeenth century. Noorlander questions the core assumptions about why the Dutch failed to establish a durable empire in America. He downplays the usual commercial explanations and places the focus instead on the tremendous expenses incurred in the Calvinist-backed war and the Reformed Church's meticulous, worried management of colonial affairs. By pinpointing the issues that hampered the size and import of the Dutch Atlantic world, Noorlander revises core notions about the organization and aims of the Dutch empire, the culture of the West India Company, and the very shape of Dutch society. Open Access edition funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book Synopsis Inching Toward Heaven's Door by : John F. Sieckhaus
Download or read book Inching Toward Heaven's Door written by John F. Sieckhaus and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-11-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few clues as to why a person responds to the vicissitudes of life in a given way. As John Sieckhaus states in this memoir of his own spiritual journey "some have the courage to choose life from their earliest moments of sober reflection while others opt to soothe their pain with addictions of the mind and body, some choose an early final exit and still others stay the healing course trusting that there is purpose to their lives, meaning in their suffering, and healing as the intended outcome of some higher power." The tragic slaying of his parents propels the author as sixteen year old onto a life course dictated initially by his own errant choices and the acculturations of family, tribe and society. His decision to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry is consistent with his search for life's magic formula, the alchemist's quest for the philosopher's stone, but the first fruits of this venture are depression and a horrific encounter with his "family demons". Resort to psychotherapy and chemical dis-ease management, a therapeutic model "characterized by a patient's need to trust in the alchemical wisdom of his or her therapist," proves to be a mere palliative in a desperate striving to arrest the pain, and it is only through an encounter with the living God amidst a small band of refugees from mainline Christian churches that his journey of faith, remembrance and healing begins. John Sieckhaus tells this story with conviction and a deep sense of gratitude for God's provision of trustworthy guides and fellow travelers on the way. It was from James and Mary Baird, a couple whose decision to stand against the racial prejudices inherent in their small town culture in Baird Mississippi in the 1950s forced them to leave family, clan and culture to reach out to the hurting and the needy in southeast Asia that he learned to heed God's call in his life and to pursue his vocation with a new sense of adventure and purpose. In so doing he had to come to grips with his work as a scientist engaged in the development of weapon systems and was eventually led to challenge his company's involvement with nerve gas research and resign his position. With each step in his vocational journey the healing went deeper and finally, after staying the course for more than twenty years, the author was gifted with a revelation of his family pathology which provided the clues concerning his own responses to life. This is a story that the author was compelled to tell because the telling was an integral part of his healing journey and because, as he states in the introduction "I believe that what I have experienced and learned is not just for my own healing and spiritual growth, that perhaps it may help others walk their own path to wholeness. If this should prove to be the case for only one other person it (the telling) will have been worth the effort."

Book Synopsis Taxing Heaven's Storehouse by : Paul J. Smith
Download or read book Taxing Heaven's Storehouse written by Paul J. Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tea growing was a prosperous industry in Sichuan when Wang Anshi's New Policies created a Tea Market Agency to buy up Sichuanese tea and trade it to Tibetan tribesmaen for cavalry horses. At first the highly autonomous agency not only acquired the needed horses but made a profit. After the Junchen conquest of Noth China, however, market realities changed and the combined Tea and Horse Agency's once successful policies ruined tea farmers, failed to meet quotas for horses, and ran a deficit. Paul J. Smith details the workings of Sichuan tea farming and the tea trade, examines the geopolitical factors that forced the Song to buy horses, and graphically describes the difficulties of driving them more than a thousand miles through rugged mountains with only inexperienced conscripts as trail hands. In this study of fiscal sociology, Smith also explains how the Tea and Horse Agency transformed the Sichuan local eleite, which was notorious for its resistance to state power, into imperial civil servants eager to tax their own region. He draws on modern theories of corporate behavior to explain what made the inner workings of the Agency an extraordinary departure for the Chinese civil service; and he demonstrates how the agency put into practice the most radical New -Policies theories of state economic activism. The Agency made entrepreneurs out of bureaucrats, but ultimately became ruinously tyrannical as the system of state rewards and punishments drove its personnel to actions that crippled key sectors of the economy.

Book Synopsis Forma Lux Heaven's Harbinger by : Joseph J. Morse
Download or read book Forma Lux Heaven's Harbinger written by Joseph J. Morse and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though I am not much studied on the views of Angelology, nor do I have figurines or birdbaths of angels or send out daily memes of them. Forma Lux is a fictional angel set in the format of scripture as I understand it. The Bible speaks about some who have entertained angels unaware, and how do we know we have not been visited? They have appeared to declare God's warnings or foretell what is coming. Forma Lux (form of light) is a harbinger sent from the kingdom of heaven who gives anticipatory sight of what is to come and is a nonmortal servant of God. She is the "hark," the "fear not" messenger to people in individual settings throughout this book. She is a bit snide in a humorous way but can give a piercing dialogue to people who need to hear it. The reader may find the dialogue, the characters, and the unique situations written with passion in a different style or interesting way. The book has three different stories. First story ("Forma Lux and Old Soldiers Fade Away") is about an elderly gentleman unaware that he is at the last days of his life. He fought in WWII and was facing his grief of killing men so long ago and has bitterness against God. He is visited by Forma Lux, and I won't tell you what happens next. The second story ("Forma Lux and the Space Cloud") is the beginning before Forma is assigned to earth by God. She is in a solitude place where her duties are to catch souls that had problems, even after their death, accepting their salvation after their conversion. She dialogues with Ephriam Jones, who fought in the English Marston Moor Civil War in the 1600s. You might enjoy his out-of-body flight, leaving his soul and meeting up with Form Lux and the dialogue the two have. The third story ("Forma Lux: Heaven's Harbinger"), Forma Lux is assigned to Plymouth (Plimoth), Massachusetts, to the pilgrim plantation. They find her living in the woods in a mysterious house by herself, and they call her to task. Of course, there is a witch trial but most of the characters are historically believable at the time. Some of the happenings, or at least the accusation of the happenings, are said in court documents of my own family during that time--that dang floating hammer in the chimney, invisible roof stumpers... Wait for the end. It is a good one.
