Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At this point in my life, I decided to put life's memories together for my family. In 1922, I was born on a farm in the southwest corner of Mahaska County, Iowa. I am now 85 years old and have lived the BEST life! With this book I hope I can pass along some of the highlights of these 85 years! In my mind, all of it has been fun! World War II entered my life in December of 1942. After 30 hours of pilot training I washed out and went to airplane mechanics school in Biloxi, Mississippi. Out of the War in February of '46, on a Friday. Bought a restaurant on Saturday and went to work on Monday-my life has centered around it ever since. I met my wife of 56 years in 1950. Dorene and I had 4 great children and she has a great business sense. Along the way I was in numerous sidelines (wholesale route, bottling works, grocery store, Joe's Short Order in the Chicago Loop). All the way from Bussey, Iowa to Indianola, it's been great. I hope my family and friends will enjoy this story of my life.

Book excerpt: Football Yesterday and Today is a photo book in the iconic style of America Yesterday and Today, with the past in evocative black and white side by side with the present in vivid colour. This nostalgic look back to the present-day allows the modern fan to see just how much things have moved on over the years but not much has altered. Images of the past are strangely different yet oddly familiar: times may change but football remains the great game it always was.

Book excerpt: Here's What Former NFL Players Think About "THE ULTIMATE GAME" “(THE ULTIMATE GAME) reads as if Tom Clancy hijacked Monday Night Football; it’s that cutting edge.” – Joe Kapp; Super Bowl Quarterback and CFL Hall of Fame Inductee “THE ULTIMATE GAME puts the sport of professional football in a futuristic setting and tells a tale of what technology could one day allow. It’s a positive, exciting thrill-ride for all ages. It’s a frightening and intriguing look at how the game could be manipulated.” – Dan Pastorini; Pro Bowl Quarterback “I cheer Kevin (Bakko) for writing a fast moving, fun, futuristic novel that thoroughly entertained me. And he found no need to load the book with the smut that has been filling most sports books to date.” – Phil Villapiano; Super Bowl Champion Linebacker “If John Grisham and Issac Asimov got together to write a novel about pro football – this is what they would write. You have to read it to believe it!” – Jeff Nixon; Former Player, and Editor / Nat’l Advocacy Committee Member of ‘Fourth and Goal Assists’ “Kevin Bakko does a great job of conveying the spirit of the players and their drive to be the World Champions of NFL football. He also points out the price that players pay to play in the NFL both mentally and physically.” – Carl Mauck; Thirty-Four Year NFL Veteran Player and Assistant Coach “THE ULTIMATE GAME is a book that honors the NFL alumnus of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.” – George Martin; Super Bowl Champion Defensive End and President of the NFL Alumni Association IMAGINE THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED VIDEO FOOTBALL GAME EVER CREATED. IMAGINE SOME OF THE GREATEST PRO PLAYERS TO EVER STEP ON THE GRIDIRON AT THE CONTROLS. NOW IMAGINE BOTH, MANIPULATING A REAL NFL FOOTBALL TEAM... WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE... WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. 2019 is the 100th Anniversary of the National Football League, and the Houston Texans have just won their second Super Bowl in a row. Now comes their quest for an unprecedented third consecutive trip to the championship game. Yet accomplishing this extraordinary feat will not be left to either dutiful preparation or divine providence. A glory-driven head coach (Walt Griffin) and a narcissistic neuroscientist in need of human guinea pigs (Dr. John McLane) have combined forces to reach the final phase of their respective life’s ambition. But murder, mayhem, and the pursuit of answers to gut-wrenching questions are driving veteran All-Pro quarterback Rod Mackenna to make sense of the resulting toll that has been taken by his team, his teammates, and his long – but no longer – unrequited love interest. On the day of the Super Bowl – with the final piece to an unimaginable puzzle firmly in his grasp – Griffin and McLane catch Mac within the confines of the clandestine command center used by their band of former gridiron heroes to control the active players, on-the-field, like a macabre video game. Only the threat of harm to his (now) fiancée keeps Mac on the sideline with a bogus injury as the final contest of the season kicks off.

Book excerpt: Explores the often overlooked role of the NFL in the American civil rights movement Watching a football game on a Sunday evening, most sports fans do not realize the profound impact the National Football League had on the civil rights movement. Similarly, in a sport where seven out of ten players are Black, few are fully aware of the history and contributions of their athletic forebears. Among the touchdowns and tackles lies a rich history of African American life and the struggle to achieve equal rights. Outside the Lines traces how football laid a foundation for social change long before the judicial system formally recognized the inequalities of racial separation. Integrating teams to include white and Black athletes alike fifty years before the reversal of Plessy v Ferguson, the National Football League served as a microcosmic fishbowl of the highs and lows—the trials and triumphs—of racial integration. In this chronicle of the important stories of Black NFL athletes in the early twentieth century, Charles K. Ross has given us an important insight into the role of sports in the fight for racial justice.

Book excerpt: The inside story of the Super Bowl champion 1986 Giants, the extraordinary friendships that resulted--and stunning revelations about the hardships they faced, based on new interviews with Bill Parcells, Phil Simms, Mark Bavaro, and Bill Belichick. The 1986 New York Giants are legendary. A championship team coached by Bill Parcells and his wunderkind assistant Bill Belichick, featuring future Hall of Famers and All-Pros like Phil Simms, Lawrence Taylor, Mark Bavaro, and Harry Carson. They were dominant on the field and formed a unique and lasting bond off of it. More than thirty years later, it's the friendships that have proved more important--a matter of life and death. In Once a Giant, bestselling football writer Gary Myers tells the story of that team and what became of it. Gridiron glory eventually faded; chronic pain, addiction, and in some cases crimes have followed. Many football players face these harsh realities, but the Giants have confronted and survived them together. With unprecedented access, Myers dives into such issues as Mark Bavaro's battle with injuries, the breakup and reconciliation of Parcells and Belichick, and Lawrence Taylor's struggles with sobriety. He creates a never-before-seen portrait of the team's run to the title, and their even more challenging fight to live after it ended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Chudacoff delves into the background and what-ifs surrounding seven defining moments that redefined college sports. These changes involved fundamental issues--race and gender, profit and power--that reflected societal tensions and, in many cases, remain pertinent today: the failed 1950 effort to pass a Sanity Code regulating payments to football players; the thorny racial integration of university sports programs; the boom in television money; the 1984 Supreme Court decision that settled who could control skyrocketing media revenues; Title IX's transformation of women's athletics; the cheating, eligibility, and recruitment scandals that tarnished college sports in the 1980s and 1990s; the ongoing controversy over paying student athletes a share of the enormous moneys harvested by schools and athletic departments. A thought-provoking journey into the whos and whys of college sports history, Changing the Playbook reveals how the turning points of yesterday and today will impact tomorrow."

Book excerpt: Never in the history of Nigerian football had a footballer been a newspaper columnist, I was told. So I would be the first. In fact when the suggestion was made for me to write, I was at the peak of my career in football. I had been a part of the team that won the Africa Cup Winners Cup in '76; been representing the national team fully for two years; played in the African Cup of Nations; won the All-Africa Games silver medal; gone to the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. I had also been rated as the third best player in Africa, the first time any Nigerian footballer would have been nominated in Africa's official best player poll in 1978 and was to be named second best two years later in 1980. I was convinced that football followers would love to read about the life and personal experiences of a footballer.

Katy Williams, editor at the local newspaper, is stunned by the reaction of the town -- and her staff -- which ranges from indifference to the flag to outrage that anyone would challenge it at all. When five of the starting line follow Clay Peabody off the team, the situation turns explosive. And then, the police find a body hanging from the goal posts at South Plains City High School. It's one of the players, and a note says, one down and six to go....
