Book Synopsis Our Family Heritage by : Edward Marshall Perdue
Download or read book Our Family Heritage written by Edward Marshall Perdue and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Perduex (b.1625), Huguenot and son of Pierre Perduex, married Marie Toisson. They emigrated from France to England in 1655, and in 1657 went to Martinique in the West Indies as resident factor for the Indies Company. By 1661 they immigrated to Elizabeth City, Virginia and, seeking fellow Huguenots, settled in eastern Worcestor County, Maryland in 1662. "There is a gap between the time Henri Perdeux [sic] is reported to have come over to Maryland in 1662 and the time that we see records of the next Perdue, John Perdue in 1720 of more than 58 years. This is enough time for three generations to have started"--(P. 1.0-8). The Perdue family of the eastern shore of Maryland starts with John Perdue Sr. (d.1743), who purchased land in Somerset (later Worcester) County, Maryland in 1720. Descendants and relatives listed lived chiefly in Maryland.

Download or read book Driftwood written by Eva De Jong-Duldig and published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We are spread out in every direction of the wind.’ – Karl Duldig 1941 In 1938 sculptor Karl Duldig, his wife Slawa Horowitz-Duldig – inventor of the modern foldable umbrella – and their baby daughter Eva, left their home in Vienna for an uncertain future. They found a brief refuge in Singapore before arriving in Sydney on 25 September 1940. Australia was at war: they were classified as enemy aliens and interned in an isolated camp in northern Victoria. Karl said, ‘A game of tennis saved my life’. The story follows the family’s narrow escape from Nazi Austria, as well as the recovery of all their Viennese art and other possessions after the war. Spanning three continents and three generations, it poignantly captures both the loss that families encounter when they are dislocated by war and the challenges they face when adapting to a new way of life. ‘This book offers an insight into the cultural life of Australia at a time of enormous change, politically and artistically; a profound lesson in the experience of emigration in the worst of circumstances, but also the transforming contribution to the life of the nation through the talents of immigrants like Karl and Slawa Duldig.’ – Dr Gerard Vaughan AM (Director, National Gallery of Australia) - Awarded a Commendation in the History Publication category of the 2017 Victorian Community History Awards.

Download or read book Snow Hill written by Mindie Burgoyne and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow Hill, on the banks of the Pocomoke River, has been home to farmers, bankers, merchants, artisans, sea captains, and politicians for more than 300 years. Founded by English settlers from a part of London named Snow Hill," the town became a trading post on the Pocomoke and was designated a royal port by William and Mary of England. Trade was the engine that drove commerce in the town, and the Pocomoke River was the highway. Imported goods were brought into Snow Hill to be taxed, and lumber, tobacco, and crafts by local artisans were exported across the Atlantic. Snow Hill's economic success spread rapidly in the 19th century as steamboats carried passengers to Norfolk and Baltimore and the railroad brought opportunities to expand local markets. Hotels, shops, boarding houses, and stately homes sprang up as the economy expanded. Today Snow Hill boasts one of the largest concentrations of historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings still intact in the state of Maryland. Residents are committed to preserving the town's heritage so it will remain "the Treasure of the Eastern Shore."
