Book Synopsis War crimes and crimes against humanity in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court by : Christine Byron
Download or read book War crimes and crimes against humanity in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court written by Christine Byron and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical analysis of the definitions of war crimes and crimes against humanity as construed in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Each crime is discussed from its origins in treaty or customary international law, through developments as a result of the jurisprudence of modern ad hoc or internationalised tribunals, to modifications introduced by the Rome Statute and the Elements of Crimes. The influence of human rights law upon the definition of crimes is discussed, as is the possible impact of State reservations to the underlying treaties which form the basis for the conduct covered by the offences in the Rome Statute. Examples are also given from recent conflicts to aid a ‘real life’ discussion of the type of conduct over which the International Criminal Court may take jurisdiction. This will be relevant to postgraduates, academics and professionals with an interest in the International Criminal Court and the normative basis for the crimes over which the Court may take jurisdiction.
Book Synopsis War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens by : G. J. Oliver
Download or read book War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens written by G. J. Oliver and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-09-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. J. Oliver provides a new assessment of the economic history of Athens in the Hellenistic era, when the city was no longer an imperial power and struggled to maintain its territory, both at home in Attica and overseas in the cleruchies. Oliver assesses how political and military change affected the fragile economies of the Athenian polis. Warfare in Attica required the Athenians to protect their domestic grain supply and seek out those beyond the city to provide commodities from abroad. Oliver stresses the economic importance of benefaction and civic honours, and shows how much the citizens of Athens contributed to the defence and finances of their city.
Book Synopsis Responding to Modern Genocide by : Mark D. Kielsgard
Download or read book Responding to Modern Genocide written by Mark D. Kielsgard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in the understanding and treatment of genocide through the twentieth century have involved a combination of politics, public opinion, social trends, and economic development, and led to the substantive law of genocide and the assumption of international jurisdiction. This book analyzes incidences of genocide and mass atrocities, focusing on the political factors involved in modern counter-genocide efforts. Drawing on incidences of genocide and mass atrocity such as the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, and the Armenian genocide, Mark Kielsgard adopts a conceptual model that reveals the political factors which impact the international law of genocide, such as barriers and catalysts to transitional justice and the politics of genocide denial. As a work which provides a focused picture of those influences and their significance to genocide studies, this book will be of great use and interest to students and researchers in international criminal law, conflict studies, and conflict resolution.

Book Synopsis Clausewitz and African War by : Isabelle Duyvesteyn
Download or read book Clausewitz and African War written by Isabelle Duyvesteyn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil, diamonds, timber, food aid - just some of the suggestions put forward as explanations for African wars in the past decade. Another set of suggestions focuses on ethnic and clan considerations. These economic and ethnic or clan explanations contend that wars are specifically not fought by states for political interests with mainly conventional military means, as originally suggested by Carl von Clausewitz in the 19th century. This study shows how alternative social organizations to the state can be viewed as political actors using war as a political instrument.

Book Synopsis The Proclamations of the Tudor Kings by : R. W. Heinze
Download or read book The Proclamations of the Tudor Kings written by R. W. Heinze and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1976-09-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Royal proclamations were an important instrument of Tudor government and their legislative function has long been a subject of historical controversy, but the actual use of them by the Tudor monarchs has not been adequately studied. The main purpose of this book is to provide a systematic analysis of the use, authority and enforcement of proclamations in early Tudor England. Professor Heinze first attempts to establish a more accurate account of the proclamations issued; and then describes their formulation and promulgation. He also investigates the authority of proclamations as defined by Parliament and the role and power attributed to them by Tudor judges and legal writers. The main body of the study traces the actual use of proclamations and their relationship to statutory and common law. Separate chapters are devoted to the controversial Statute of Proclamations and the long neglected subject of enforcement.
