Book Synopsis Migration, Food Security and Development by : Chetan Choithani
Download or read book Migration, Food Security and Development written by Chetan Choithani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of migration as a livelihood strategy in influencing food access among rural households. Migration forms a key component of livelihoods for an increasing number of rural households in many developing countries. Importantly, there is now a growing consensus among academics and policymakers on the potential positive effects of migration in promoting human development. Concurrently, the significance of food security as an important development objective has grown tremendously, and the Sustainable Development Goals agenda envisages eliminating all forms of malnutrition. However, the academic and policy discussions on these two issues have largely proceeded in silos, with little attention devoted to the relationship they bear with each other. Using the conceptual frameworks of 'entitlements' and 'sustainable livelihoods', this book seeks to fill this gap in the context of India - a country with the most food-insecure people in the world and where migration is integral to rural livelihoods.
Book Synopsis Food Security and Land Use Change under Conditions of Climatic Variability by : Victor R. Squires
Download or read book Food Security and Land Use Change under Conditions of Climatic Variability written by Victor R. Squires and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the global challenges of food security, land use changes, and climate change impacts on food production in order to recommend sustainable development policies, anticipate future food services and demands, and identify the economic benefits and trade-offs of meeting food security demands and achieving climate change mitigation objectives. The key points of analysis that form the conclusions of this book are based on measuring the quantity and quality of land and water resources, and the rate of use of sustainable management of these resources in the context of socio-economic factors, including food security, poverty, and climate change impacts. In six parts, readers will learn about these crucial dimensions of the affects of climate change on food security, and will gain a better understanding of how to assess the trade-offs when combating multiple climate change challenges and how to develop sustainable solutions to these problems. The book presents multidimensional perspectives from expert contributors, offering holistic and strategic approaches to link knowledge on climate change and food security with action in the form of policy recommendations, with a focus on sociological and socio-economic components of climate change impacts. The intended audience of the book includes students and researchers engaged in climate change and food security issues, NGOs, and policy makers.

Book Synopsis Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment by : Ashok Pankaj
Download or read book Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment written by Ashok Pankaj and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the inclusive development experiences and impacts of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It discusses the theoretical assumptions underlying the inclusive development of Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS), and draws conclusions based on robust data and real-world experiences with the MGNREGS – which has attracted global attention as India’s most ambitious, rights-based development initiative and most expansive work-based social security measure, the world’s largest public works programme, and people-centric approach to development. The book argues that the Scheme holds vast potential, and, in fact, has made significant contribution to the promotion of livelihoods of the poorest of the poor, but that the weak institutions of local-self-governance, entrusted for implementation of the Scheme, are incapable of exploiting them to the full. It ends with a concrete policy suggestion: the inclusive development experiences gathered with the EGS and presented here could offer a source of policy change in many developing Afro-Asian countries whose situations are similar to India’s, provided the local conditions in the respective country are taken into consideration when designing the EGS. Its significance as a social security measure has increased in post-COVID loss of jobs and livelihoods of the poor.
Book Synopsis The Political Ecology of Drylands by : Sören Köpke
Download or read book The Political Ecology of Drylands written by Sören Köpke and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As climate change is becoming more severe, drought is threatening to disrupt agrarian societies. This book investigates the connections between drought and social conflict over land and water. It is a comparative study of eight dryland regions in Sub-saharan Africa, South and East Asia and South America. Sören Köpke looks at different agricultural production systems and analyses environmental conflicts linked to drought. Through the political ecology approach, the author highlights the power imbalances underpinning these conflicts. A central finding: Development strategies decide if a conflict escalates or not. The book contributes to the on-going debate on the link between climate change and conflict.

This book was released on 2022-03-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade of 1990s saw the debate surrounding the contraction of public distribution system (PDS) in India where economists and social scientists of various camps (in relation to their stands vis-à-vis the International Monetary Fund and World Bank policies) expressed their viewpoints in various journals, seminars and public meetings. It must be pointed out that political ideologies played a crucial role in determining the fate of Indian agriculture. The important areas which were touched during these discourses were: what one means by food adequate, level of malnutrition, role of State and market in food allocation and distribution, impact of trade liberalization on the Indian food market (including producers, sellers and consumers) etc. To summarize such a rich and enlightening discussion in a few words would be both difficult and impossible. However, certain elements could be pulled out and pondered upon to understand the politics of rights-based approach to food security.
