Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Standing as a vigilant watchman on the wall of existence, I found an undeniable calling to pen down the thoughts that surged within me as the clock struck midnight, transitioning from 2023 to 2024 with an almost imperceptible murmur. The echoes of celebratory fireworks resonated, yet there was an unusual calm around the farm, a hushed symphony compared to the boisterous revelries of previous years. Lying in bed, I contemplated the mysteries concealed within the threshold of another year, pondering its potential revelations. Having endured three arduous months in hospitals, undergoing operations and rehabilitation in the crucible of 2023, I found myself in the quietude of my bed, having narrowly evaded the clutches of death. I had earnestly prayed for an end, but both God and family intervened, denying me the solace of death. Reflecting on the past trials and tribulations, I discovered gratitude in the resounding "no" that echoed through my moments of despair. However, the role of a watchman is not to succumb to slumber or bask in retrospection; rather, it is a divine summons to a higher purpose. As I lay there, the clock ticking towards midnight, I sensed a divine imperative, a calling beyond the tranquility of the moment. Having skirted the edges of mortality thrice before the tumultuous year of 2023, I recognized a greater mission unfolding. Thus, this book emerges as a testament to that calling. Residing on Crescent Hill, a humble farm in Central Texas atop a hill, I perceive the world from this vantage point, offering insights into the impending changes. It is a chronicle of what lies ahead, a forewarning of the looming transformation that awaits us. Amidst the tranquility of Crescent Hill, I find myself compelled to address the imminent shift in epochs. While the forthcoming era promises a brighter dawn, it also portends considerable tribulation for humanity. The journey towards that utopian horizon is fraught with challenges, and though the prospect of peace is within reach, it remains elusive, shackled by the unprepared will of mankind. As the clock ticks away, the narrative unveils with a profound assertion: "WHAT MAN WON’T DO, THE UNIVERSE WILL." This could have been the title itself, encapsulating the essence of the book. Delving into the integration of universal cycles and human endeavors over the next seven years, the narrative begins by elucidating the cyclical nature of the universe, drawing parallels with the seasons—life's perpetual cycle of growth, fruition, decay, and renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us, especially since 9/11, have become personally concerned about issues of security, and this is no surprise. Security is near the top of government and corporate agendas around the globe. Security-related stories appear on the front page everyday. How well though, do any of us truly understand what achieving real security involves? In Beyond Fear, Bruce Schneier invites us to take a critical look at not just the threats to our security, but the ways in which we're encouraged to think about security by law enforcement agencies, businesses of all shapes and sizes, and our national governments and militaries. Schneier believes we all can and should be better security consumers, and that the trade-offs we make in the name of security - in terms of cash outlays, taxes, inconvenience, and diminished freedoms - should be part of an ongoing negotiation in our personal, professional, and civic lives, and the subject of an open and informed national discussion. With a well-deserved reputation for original and sometimes iconoclastic thought, Schneier has a lot to say that is provocative, counter-intuitive, and just plain good sense. He explains in detail, for example, why we need to design security systems that don't just work well, but fail well, and why secrecy on the part of government often undermines security. He also believes, for instance, that national ID cards are an exceptionally bad idea: technically unsound, and even destructive of security. And, contrary to a lot of current nay-sayers, he thinks online shopping is fundamentally safe, and that many of the new airline security measure (though by no means all) are actually quite effective. A skeptic of much that's promised by highly touted technologies like biometrics, Schneier is also a refreshingly positive, problem-solving force in the often self-dramatizing and fear-mongering world of security pundits. Schneier helps the reader to understand the issues at stake, and how to best come to one's own conclusions, including the vast infrastructure we already have in place, and the vaster systems--some useful, others useless or worse--that we're being asked to submit to and pay for. Bruce Schneier is the author of seven books, including Applied Cryptography (which Wired called "the one book the National Security Agency wanted never to be published") and Secrets and Lies (described in Fortune as "startlingly lively...¦[a] jewel box of little surprises you can actually use."). He is also Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., and publishes Crypto-Gram, one of the most widely read newsletters in the field of online security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a range of expert contributions, this book explores how the European Green Deal is being deployed in practice and observes how the EU tries to promote the protection of the environment in third countries. This book begins by assessing the state of the art in terms of the key conceptual issues and analyses sectoral initiatives that are particularly relevant for the deployment of the European Green Deal external dimensions. These include the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the EU’s regulatory action in the control of maritime emissions, the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, the Deforestation Initiative, the Zero Pollution Initiative, the From Farm to Fork Initiative, and the Climate Neutrality and Clean Energy Initiative in the context of the Energy Charter Treaty. Next, the authors deal with horizontal aspects of the European Green Deal that also have external dimensions, such as the Green Deal Diplomacy, the Green Public Procurement, funding measures, initiatives related to corporate sustainability and due diligence, and the implementation and enforcement of EU environmental law. This volume concludes with a cross-cutting analysis, focusing on how the EU can strengthen the impact of its normative power on international environmental governance, while also noting its limitations. Deploying the European Green Deal will be of great interest to students and scholars of international and EU environmental law and environmental policy and governance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of food and hunger in contemporary South African and Indian environmental writing From GMOs to vegetarianism and veganism, questions of what we should (and shouldn’t) eat can be frequent sources of debate and disagreement. In Precarious Eating, Ben Jamieson Stanley asks how recentering global South representations of food might shift understandings of environmental precarity. Precarious Eating follows the lead of writers and thinkers in South Africa and India who are tracing the production and consumption of food, exploring ways to reconnect our narratives about climate change, global capitalism, and social justice. Taking up a diverse range of novels, films, scholar/activist writings, intellectual histories, and cookbooks, Stanley connects the ethics of eating to histories of empire and apartheid, uneven globalization, gender and sexuality, and global South experiences of climate change. They shift the lens of environmental humanities from climate-focused paradigms developed in the global North to food-focused environmental culture and activism in the South, addressing topics that range from foraging and farmer suicides to disordered eating and queer intimacy. By highlighting authors, activists, and environments of the global South, Precarious Eating joins with scholarship from postcolonial, decolonial, Indigenous, and Black studies to underscore how capitalism and empire shape our planetary environmental crisis. Book excerpt: This book examines the current food security challenges in the small states with a focus on the Caribbean. The work is in the conjuncture of the Covid-19 pandemic and other global shocks, including the disruption in the global supply chains and the increase in climate-related events. These events have led to an increase in global prices, including the price of food and fertilisers. This book starts by examining the global food security crisis considering the aftereffects of the shocks, then provides a macro-overview of the region by focusing on its ability to invest in agriculture. The results indicate that private sector investment in agriculture has experienced only a slight increase despite creeping inflation. This has exacerbated vulnerabilities in food security, which deteriorated in 2020, undoing nearly a decade of progress in the face of climate change. Detailed attention is paid to food vulnerabilities in 14 Caribbean countries. In the final chapter, a series of policy measures are outlined to strengthen the region's food security position, with a particular focus on innovation and the region's comparative advantages.

The beggar might possess untapped potential, and the CEO might be masking a deeper, less radiant reality. This book is your personal guide to navigate these complexities. You’ll learn to spot the fakers, identify real radiators, and weed out the drains that can sabotage your business and disrupt your quality of life.
