The accounting and valuation of financial instruments according to international accounting standards has been continuously developed over the past 30 years. On July 24, 2014, the IASB published IFRS 9 - Financial Instruments. The new standard is mandatory for fiscal years beginning on or after 1st of January 2018.The replacement of the previously valid IAS 39 Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement is accompanied by significant conversion effects, which in particular lead to changes in accounting, valuation and reporting at banks. All areas of a bank need to be involved in the transition. This involves the departments accounting, risk management, controlling and organization and leads further to a cost-intensive adaptation of the IT landscape. In terms of content, the change includes among other things, the reclassification of financial instruments based on the business model and the cash flow criterion as well as the amended provisions for recognizing impairment losses. In addition IFRS 9 specifies regulations for the reclassification of financial instruments. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the new depth of regulation of IFRS 9. A major change is the conversion of the valuation concept from incurred to expected credit losses, those changes build the scope of this paper. For this purpose a possible calculation method, as used in banks, is presented. Further the corresponding implementation requirements are introduced. Although the IASB's objective to reduce the complexity of the standard has been complied with, lot of room for interpretation has been left which will be discussed in the context of this paper.
