Book Synopsis Trammel's Trace by : Gary L. Pinkerton
Download or read book Trammel's Trace written by Gary L. Pinkerton and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trammel’s Trace tells the story of a borderlands smuggler and an important passageway into early Texas. Trammel’s Trace, named for Nicholas Trammell, was the first route from the United States into the northern boundaries of Spanish Texas. From the Great Bend of the Red River it intersected with El Camino Real de los Tejas in Nacogdoches. By the early nineteenth century, Trammel’s Trace was largely a smuggler’s trail that delivered horses and contraband into the region. It was a microcosm of the migration, lawlessness, and conflict that defined the period. By the 1820s, as Mexico gained independence from Spain, smuggling declined as Anglo immigration became the primary use of the trail. Familiar names such as Sam Houston, David Crockett, and James Bowie joined throngs of immigrants making passage along Trammel’s Trace. Indeed, Nicholas Trammell opened trading posts on the Red River and near Nacogdoches, hoping to claim a piece of Austin’s new colony. Austin denied Trammell’s entry, however, fearing his poor reputation would usher in a new wave of smuggling and lawlessness. By 1826, Trammell was pushed out of Texas altogether and retreated back to Arkansas Even so, as author Gary L. Pinkerton concludes, Trammell was “more opportunist than outlaw and made the most of disorder.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Stories of immigration, culture-clash . . . and old-fashioned hard work are told through the history of Houston’s long-gone, but still-beloved restaurants.” —Yesterday’s America With more than fourteen thousand eating establishments covering seventy different ethnic cuisines, Houston is a foodie town. But even in a place where eating out is a way of life and restaurants come and go, there were some iconic spots that earned a special place in the hearts and stomachs of locals. Maxim’s taught overnight millionaires how to handle meals that came with three forks. The Trader Vic’s at the Shamrock offered dedicated homebodies a chance for the exotic, and Sonny Look’s Sirloin Inn maintained the reputation of a city of steakhouses. From Alfred’s Delicatessen to Youngblood’s Fried Chicken, Paul and Christiane Galvani celebrate the stories and recipes of Houston’s fondly remembered tastemakers. “In the book, the Galvanis share Houston’s history and love of food. They take the reader on the banks of the bayou when the city received its first inhabitants before time hopping from the Original Mexican Restaurant to The Original Kelley’s Steakhouse. Other stops include Alfred’s Delicatessen and the San Jacinto Inn.” —Houston Business Journal
Book Synopsis Comanche Marker Trees of Texas by : Steve Houser
Download or read book Comanche Marker Trees of Texas written by Steve Houser and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unprecedented effort to gather and share knowledge of the Native American practice of creating, designating, and making use of marker trees, an arborist, an anthropologist, and a Comanche tribal officer have merged their wisdom, research, and years of personal experience to create Comanche Marker Trees of Texas. A genuine marker tree is a rare find—only six of these natural and cultural treasures have been officially documented in Texas and recognized by the Comanche Nation. The latter third of the book highlights the characteristics of these six marker trees and gives an up-to-date history of each, displaying beautiful photographs of these long-standing, misshapen, controversial symbols that have withstood the tests of time and human activity. Thoroughly researched and richly illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs of trees, this book offers a close look at the unique cultural significance of these living witnesses to our history and provides detailed guidelines on how to recognize, research, and report potential marker tree candidates.
Book Synopsis Consequences of a Moonless Night by : Loueva Smith
Download or read book Consequences of a Moonless Night written by Loueva Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consequences of a Moonless Night deepens its native primitivism through humor, surrealism, and soul-searching lyricism. These poems take the reader on a journey where a grandmother "walks with the Beast of the Apocalypse on a leash" into visions of grief, eroticism, and an indelibly reflective reticence that continues to unfold with each reading. "Indeed, these poems sing with a language born of experience, a life closely examined and fully lived."--Richard Foerster, Final Judge Message In A Bottle A green bottle washes up on a beach. It is very old. It is not glass but something the sea has made by erasure. The message inside is written in blackberry juice. No one knows how to translate its language except by the cardio-bleats that tremored in the hand that wrote it, the hand bent by the curve of the horizon, calculating a rescue, a possible escape.

Book Synopsis The Collector's Eye by : Frazier King
Download or read book The Collector's Eye written by Frazier King and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a visual and written exploration of the constructed photograph as created in the last decades of the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. It documents a collection built by Frazier King, that was exhibited by FotoFest International in the Collector's Eye II Exhibition. An essay by Mr. King's essay reflects on 76 images of a variety of constructed photographs included in the collection. The narrative explores how Mr. King's own work with this type of image has resulted in a collection of constructed photographs and explains the varied nature of this category of image. The reader gets a personal and inside glimpse of the dynamics of photographic reviews such as FotoFest Meeting Place and how artists, collectors and curators interact in this venue and the relationships they form. In addition to an essay by Mr. King this volume includes an essay by Wendy Watriss, co-founder and Senior Artistic Advisor of FotoFest, on the significance of collecting and the role of the collector. The third essay is by Madeline Yale Preston, an independent curator based in London, who addresses the role of the collector as curator and the historical evolution and importance of the constructed photograph.
