As an obese college student in Indiana he lost 245 pounds on a self-devised diet of Subway sandwiches. Since 2000, he has appeared thousands of times on national television as the spokesperson for Subway's Eat healthy Platform; and he's slated to continue in this role indefinitely. In fact, Subway worried that he might be getting overexposed and decided to discontinue him. Sales fell off. Jared was quickly rehired. But to keep him from being overexposed, Subway's program runs Jared for six or eight weeks every three months. His book is not so much a diet book (his diet was pretty simple to grasp - eat Subway sandwiches) but it's more a motivational, self-help book which offers hope to people who want to change their lives. Jared has also appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, the Today Show, Good Morning America, the Jane Pauly Show and has made hundreds of speaking appearances and public appearances at sports and civic events. Jared's lessons include: Find Your Own Personal Spark One Size Doesn't Fit All Change Your Mind to Change Your Life See the Big Picture Change is for Life The Harder You Work, the Luckier You Get
Download or read book Bill Monroe written by Tom Ewing and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe was a major star of the Grand Ole Opry for over fifty years; a member of the Country Music, Songwriters, and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame; and a legendary figure in American music. This authoritative biography sets out to examine his life in careful detail--to move beyond hearsay and sensationalism to explain how and why he accomplished so much. Former Blue Grass Boy and longtime music journalist Tom Ewing draws on hundreds of interviews, his personal relationship with Monroe, and an immense personal archive of materials to separate the truth from longstanding myth. Ewing tells the story of the Monroe family's musical household and Bill's early career in the Monroe Brothers duo. He brings to life Monroe's 1940s heyday with the Classic Bluegrass Band, the renewed fervor for his music sparked by the folk revival of the 1960s, and his declining fortunes in the years that followed. Throughout, Ewing deftly captures Monroe's relationships and the personalities of an ever-shifting roster of band members while shedding light on his business dealings and his pioneering work with Bean Blossom and other music festivals. Filled with a wealth of previously unknown details, Bill Monroe offers even the most devoted fan a deeper understanding of Monroe's towering achievements and timeless music.

Download or read book Sense Of Place written by Barbara Allen and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the homogenization of American life, areas of strong regional consciousness still persist in the United States, and there is a growing interest in regionalism among the public and among academics. In response to that interest ten folklorists here describe and interpret a variety of American regional cultures in the twentieth century. Their book is the first to deal specifically with regional culture and the first to employ the perspective of folklore in the study of regional identity and consciousness. The authors range widely over the United States, from the Eastern Shore to the Pacific Northwest, from the Southern Mountains to the Great Plains. They look at a variety of cultural expressions and practices—legends, anecdotes, songs, foodways, architecture, and crafts. Tying their work together is a common consideration of how regional culture shapes and is shaped by the consciousness of living in a special place. In exploring this dimension of regional culture the authors consider the influence of natural environment and historical experience on the development of regional culture, the role of ethnicity in regional consciousness, the tensions between insiders and outsiders that stem from a sense of regional identity, and the changes in culture in response to social and economic change. With its focus on cultural manifestations and its folkloristic perspective this book provides a fresh and needed contribution to regional studies. Written in a clear, readable style, it will appeal to general readers interested in American regions and their cultures. At the same time the research and analytical approach make it useful not only to folklorists but to cultural geographers, anthropologists, and other scholars of regional studies.

Download or read book Three Rivers written by Dan Lee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky is richly blessed with rivers. This book tells the stories of three of the most beautiful and historic: the Rolling Fork, the Nolin, and the Rough. Each is an unpredictable force of nature flowing through a land that varies from wide, sunny meadows to dark, rock-bound hollows.Chapters describe the people who lived in the river valleys, including pioneers, frontier preachers, a future president, cave explorers, Confederate and Union soldiers, desperate killers, hardscrabble farmers, and inspired visionaries. Sometimes they were wasteful and violent and vain; at other times they were inventive and graceful and kind. Their descendants realized that survival had come to mean something new: living in harmony with the land and the rivers.

Book Synopsis The L&N Railroad in the Civil War by : Dan Lee
Download or read book The L&N Railroad in the Civil War written by Dan Lee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Louisville & Nashville Railroad was completed just as the first salvos of the Civil War erupted. As one of the few railroads linking the North and South, the L&N was valuable to both the Union and the Confederacy. Consequently, its route became a fiercely contested corridor of fire and blood. This history recounts the numerous military events along the L&N in the years 1861 through 1865, and also examines the still-resonant theme of the relationship between a major corporation and the government during a time of national crisis.

Fogle gained popularity after losing over 200 pounds while eating Subway sandwiches as part of his daily diet. His weight loss journey caught the attention of Subway executives, who eventually featured him in a national advertising campaign. Fogle became known as "The Subway Guy," and his success story was a powerful marketing tool that helped the chain grow its customer base. Fogle's celebrity status also allowed him to launch a successful career as a motivational speaker. He visited schools across the United States, sharing his inspiring story and encouraging young people to follow a healthy diet and exercise routine. However, Fogle's reputation took a sour turn when he was arrested in 2015 on charges of possession of child pornography and paying for sex with minors. Fogle pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of being mindful of one's actions, even when in the public eye.
