Book excerpt: Amsterdam's greatest charm may also be its greatest enigma: how can such a gracious, historical treasure house also multitask as the most offbeat metropolis in the world? From Rembrandts to rock and roll, the city has always been a mesmerizing mix of old and new. Now, as this new edition reveals, Amsterdam and the entire Netherlands is being dramatically revamped for the 21st century by artisanal trendmakers, designers, star chefs, and future-forward architects. Fodor's curated coverage includes the best of the country beyond Amsterdam, including Haarlem, the Hague, Delft, and Rotterdam. Expanded Coverage: The year 2013 will be a banner one for Amsterdam, as two top museums will unveil massive renovations: the Rijksmuseum (home of Rembrandt’s Nightwatch) and the Stedelijk (a modern-art collection). New write-ups showcase the city’s hip “outlier” neighborhoods: North Amsterdam, the Eastern Drydocks, and the gentrifying De Wallen “Red Light” district. The dining chapter dishes on the burgeoning school of Amsterdam cuisine (turbot on a bed of beetroot and sea nettles, anyone?), and a “Netherlands Today” section focuses on high-profile topics such as the changes for “vice visitors” (laws concerning sex and drugs), contemporary design, and immigration. Illustrated Features: Packed with gorgeous color photos, this new edition will add images of iconic recent Amsterdam buildings, such as the Nemo science center designed by Renzo Piano, the ARCAM center for architecture, and Delugan Meissl’s Eye Film Institute, along with new design-centric hotels such as the Conservatorium and the Andaz Amsterdam. A two-page feature presents top Dutch designers. Discerning Recommendations: This edition offers savvy advice and recommendations from local writers to help travelers make the most of their time. Fodor's Choice designates our “best picks,” from hotels to nightlife and beyond. “Word of Mouth” quotes provide valuable insights from fellow travelers.

She then opens the story out of explore the voice's psychological, social, emotional and cultural significance, investigating and challenging received wisdom of all kinds, from the stereotype of silent men and talkative women and the theory that only 7 per cent of our meaning is carried in the words we use, to the fascinating insight that children who have difficulty decoding voices are likely to be less popular with other children as early as kindergarten, and that we can recognise the emotion in another person's voice within sixty milliseconds of first hearing them speak."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Connectionism and Psychology by : Philip T. Quinlan
Download or read book Connectionism and Psychology written by Philip T. Quinlan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of neural network research has led to a major reappraisal of many fundamental assumptions in cognitive and perceptual psychology. This text—aimed at the advanced undergraduate and beginning postgraduate student—is an in-depth guide to those aspects of neural network research that are of direct relevance to human information processing. Examples of new connectionist models of learning, vision, language and thought are described in detail. Both neurological and psychological considerations are used in assessing its theoretical contributions. The status of the basic predicates like exclusive-OR is examined, the limitations of perceptrons are explained and properties of multi-layer networks are described in terms of many examples of psychological processes. The history of neural networks is discussed from a psychological perspective which examines why certain issues have become important. The book ends with a general critique of the new connectionist approach. It is clear that new connectionism work provides a distinctive framework for thinking about central questions in cognition and perception. This new textbook provides a clear and useful introduction to its theories and applications.

Book Synopsis Identification and Determination of Impurities in Drugs by : S. Görög
Download or read book Identification and Determination of Impurities in Drugs written by S. Görög and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-05-19 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impurity profiling is the common name of a group of analytical activities, the aim of which is the detection, identification/structure elucidation and quantitative determination of organic and inorganic impurities, as well as residual solvents in bulk drugs and pharmaceutical formulations. Since this is the best way to characterise the quality and stability of bulk drugs and pharmaceutical formulations, this is the core activity in modern drug analysis.Due to the very rapid development of the analytical methodologies available for this purpose and the similarly rapid increase of the demands as regards the purity of drugs it is an important task to give a summary of the problems and the various possibilities offered by modern analytical chemistry for their solution. That is the aim of this book. The book is methodology-oriented. In the first chapter some important aspects of the background of impurity-related analytical studies (toxicological, pharmacopoeial aspects, the characterisation of the sources of impurities and the role of impurity profiling in various fields of drug research, production and therapeutic use) are summarised. Chapter two deals with related organic impurities, the strategies for impurity profiling, the use of chromatographic and related separation methods, spectroscopic, and hyphenated techniques. The subject of the third chapter is the identification and determination of residual solvents. The determination of inorganic impurities is discussed in chapter four. The special problems of degradation products as impurities are dealt with in chapter five. A separate chapter has been compiled to deal with one of the most up-to-date problems in contemporary pharmaceutical analysis, the estimation of enantiomeric purity of chiral drugs. Chapter seven is devoted to various approaches to solve the problem of polymorphic modifications as impurities. Since in the broader sense of the word the microbiological purity of drugs and drug products also belongs to this circle, the most important information from this field is summarised in chapter eight. After the mainly methodology-oriented chapters, the final one concentrates on four groups of drugs (peptides, biotechnological products, antibiotics and steroids) in order to demonstrate the use of the methods described earlier.
