Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: October 10, 2017. The U.S. men’s soccer team loses in Trinidad and Tobago, and fails to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Winning soccer’s greatest prize never seemed more distant. Immediate fixes—a new coach, a revamped professional league, a commitment to coaching education—won’t put the USA in the global elite. The nation is too fractious, too litigious, too wrapped up in other sports, and too late to the game. In Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup: A Historical and Cultural Reality Check, Beau Dure shows what American soccer is really up against. Using hundreds of sources to trace more than 100 years of history, Dure delves into the culture that only recently lost its disdain for the global game and still doesn’t have the depth of soccer insight and passion that much of the world has had for generations. The difficulty isn’t any single thing—the mismanagement of failed leagues, the inability to agree on a path forward, the lawsuits that stem from an inability to agree, or the unique American culture that treasures its homegrown sports. It’s everything. And yet, Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup is ultimately optimistic. Dure argues that with the right long-term changes, the U.S. can build a soccer environment that consistently produces quality players, strong results, and a lot more fun on the international stage. Soccer fans and skeptics alike will find this a fascinating examination of America’s past, present, and future in the beautiful game.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Cologne Business School Köln, course: Preispolitik, language: English, abstract: For hundreds of years people have been highly affine to any kind of sports. Thousands of people regularly watch sports events online and offline and in society the topic of a team‟s or an individual‟s performance is always passionately discussed. Taking a look at Europe the most popular sport is football. Mughai (2016, p. 13) elaborates that football – or sometimes called soccer to avoid interchanging with American football – is globally ranked first in terms of popularity. Supporters that are very passionate about their team are visiting the huge football stadiums week by week. As the capacity of a stadium is limited sometimes fans are even purchasing their entrance tickets weeks or months ahead of the event itself. Especially the German Bundesliga has been facing an enormous interest growth within the last years resulting in an average of 42.609 visitors per match day making the league the most visited one in Europe. (DFL, 2015, p. 22f) Similar to the ever-growing popularity of sports, the costs are rising. This is caused by mounting player salaries, increased transfer fees and other operational expenses. (Drayer, Lee & Shapiro, 2012, p. 184; Breuer & Kemper, 2015, p. 142) Sport clubs therefore need to steadily open up and augment their sources of revenue: match day revenues, advertising, broadcasting, transfer fees and merchandising. (DFL, 2015, p. 26f) Some of these revenue streams can be actively influenced by the Bundesliga clubs whilst others are hard to affect. One of the determinants that can be modified is ticket pricing. The objective of this Master Thesis is to explain the prevailing pricing strategy in the German Bundesliga and to present innovative, value-based pricing approaches which can be tested. Creating an understanding of the fans‟ willingness to pay and factors having impact on the purchase decision making process, a gap in research is supposed to be filled. In this Master Thesis the author aims to find sufficient, relevant, reliable and empirically proven answers to the following research questions: 1) Why have innovative value-based pricing strategies like dynamic pricing not yet been implemented in the German Bundesliga? 2) To what extant are fans willing to pay different prices depending on dynamic factors? 3) What determinants need to be taken care of when changing the prevailing pricing strategies of Bundesliga clubs?

Book excerpt: "A beautiful story, expertly told." -- Per Mertesacker, Arsenal defender and member of the German national team, winners of the 2014 World Cup Estáo do Maracan", July 13, 2014, the last ten minutes of extra time in the World Cup Final: German forward Mario Gö jumps to meet a floated pass from Andr' Schü cushions the ball with his chest, and in one fluid motion volleys the ball past the onrushing Argentine goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. The goal wins Germany the World Cup for the first time in almost thirty years. As the crowd roars, Gö looks dazed, unable to comprehend what he has done. In Das Reboot, Raphael Honigstein charts the return of German soccer from the dreary functionality of the late 1990s to Gö's moment of sublime, balletic genius and asks: How did this come about? The answer takes him from California to Stuttgart, from Munich to the Maracan", via Dortmund and Amsterdam. Packed with exclusive interviews with key figures, including JüKlinsmann, Thomas Mü Oliver Bierhoff, and many more, Honigstein's book reveals the secrets of German soccer's success.

Be as critical as you like' - Pep Guardiola to Marti Perarnau, summer 2013 Marti Perarnau was given total access to Bayern Munich during season 2013-14. At the invitation of Pep Guardiola, he shadowed the Catalan, his staff and his superstar players during training and on matchdays. Bayern smashed domestic records on their way to the double, but were humiliated by Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final. Perarnau was with them every step of the way. Perarnau is with Guardiola as he is courted by the world's greatest clubs during his sabbatical in New York. We hear Guardiola explain in detail the radical tactical moves which transform Bayern's season and reprogramme the players who will win the World Cup with Germany.Perarnau talks exclusively and in fascinating detail with players such as Arjen Robben, Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Thiago Alcantara and Bastian Schweinsteiger. Pep Confidential is much more than the story of a season - it is also a lasting portrait of one of the greatest coaches in sport.

Book excerpt: “An outstanding work … the [soccer] book of the decade.” —Sunday Business Post Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe. Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon. Inverting the Pyramid provides a definitive understanding of the tactical genius of modern-day Barcelona, for the first time showing how their style of play developed from Dutch “Total Football,” which itself was an evolution of the Scottish passing game invented by Queens Park in the 1870s and taken on by Tottenham Hotspur in the 1930s. Inverting the Pyramid has been called the “Big Daddy” (Zonal Marking) of soccer tactics books; it is essential for any coach, fan, player, or fantasy manager of the beautiful game

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents accounts of economic and psychological analyses of association football (or “soccer” as it is popularly known in the USA). As football is widely accepted to be the world’s most popular sport, the case for scientific investigation of its characteristics is self-evident. As the contributions to this book demonstrate, the game of football offers an ideal opportunity to empirically investigate a wide range of broad issues, for example: behavioural decision-making; judgmental forecasting; motivation; game-theoretic models of strategic choice; competition and labour markets. Are teams more likely to concede a goal after having just scored? Does the team going first in a penalty shoot-out have an advantage? Should goal-keepers dive or stay put for penalty kicks? Do referees make decisions consistently? Why do fans like their teams? What factors influence the career of footballers? How well can experts predict football matches? How accurate are prediction markets? How does the stock-market react to match outcomes? These questions and others are addressed in this book. A particular focus is the investigation of popular conceptions—and misconceptions—about football. Of interest to psychologists, behavioural economists and football enthusiasts with an analytic approach to understanding the game, this book brings together contributions from a range of academic disciplines and will stimulate further research into football and the intriguing insights into behaviour it offers.
