Book Synopsis Command and Control of the Division Rear Battle by : Gregory M. Eckert
Download or read book Command and Control of the Division Rear Battle written by Gregory M. Eckert and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines current US command and control doctrine for the division rear battle as presented in FM 90-14, Rear Battle. The adequacy of current division rear battle command and control doctrine is analyzed within the context of the AirLand Battlefield in light of the historical experiences of US armored divisions in World War II. The primary conclusion is that the principle of unity of effort, which FM 90-14 suggests is necessary in conducting the rear battle, and which was a critical factor in the successful conduct of the rear battle by US armored divisions in World War II, is missing in our current doctrine. The attempt by our current doctrine to integrate the division's rear security effort across organizational and functional boundaries is unrealistic. This has resulted in the establishment of confusing and redundant command and staff relationships involving, among others, the RAOC, G3, and rear battle officer. The primacy of command rather than control must be restored in our rear battle doctrine. In this regard, what is needed is a rear brigade equivalent commander along with his own headquarters and staff, analogous to the armored division trains commander of World War II. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Rear Battle: A Maneuver Doctrine Dilemma by :
Download or read book The Rear Battle: A Maneuver Doctrine Dilemma written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay takes is a critical look at Rear Battle doctrine. The criticism is centrally focused on the influence that maneuver warfare has had on AirLand Battle and specifically on the Rear Battle. It exposes the flawed attempt to fuse the close-in and deep battle with the rear battle. It documents a long litany of doctrinal solutions offered in FM 90-14, Rear Battle. Selected issues reviewed include the command and control problems, base and base cluster problems, tactical combat force including fire support integration and the dilemma of fighting the rear battle versus CSS (Combat Service Support) mission support requirements. The paper advocates more relatistic training for CSS units, rethinking the mechanics of how Military police will respond to various threat level conditions and rewriting rear battle doctrine to reflect solutions to the problems delineated which are consistent with the capabilities of the units inhabiting the rear area. The essay ends with a plea for military leaders to recognize the realities of the rear battle situation and realize the danger in recklessly following maneuver doctrine.
