Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making: For Trout, Etc The formation of the eye of the fish does not materi ally differ, one species from another, among the angler's fishes. The cornea is somewhat flat in sectional outline, and the shape, or, so to speak, the ground plan, is virtu ally similar in save the European graylin g (s. Thymallus). The pupil of the eye of this fish is oval instead of ciren lar - the oval of the plover's egg rather than that of the hen, being sharper than a true oval at one end. The apex of this sharp end is pointed toward the upper part of the head, tailward, giving the fish a somewhat sinister appearance. What purpose this particular configuration serves I do not know, but one thing is certain The vis ual ability of the grayling is equal, if not superior, to that of the trout, as is proved by its rising, often from a great depth, to the fly. I notice, also, that the normal waiting position of this fish is inclined toward the water's surface instead of being horizontal, as is usually the case with trout. This being so, the greater mass of the rays of direct sunlight would fall on the forward part of the eye, and I offer it as a conjecture, based on the law of devel opment, that this, continued through generations, has evolved the peculiar shape. The graylin g of this country, though apparently similar in every other respect, does not exhibit the peculiarity referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making for Trout, Etc In order to arrive at a right method in the capture of any of the fera naturœ it is unmistakably necessary to first become acquainted with the creature's personal habits. No man in his senses would go out to trap - say, beaver - knowing nothing of the tastes, faculties and general intelligence of the animal, nor would the ordinarily sensible man expect to get much sport with his gun unless he possessed at least an elementary knowledge of the game he sought. Yet this is precisely what a majority of anglers do, with regard to fish. Fishes depend exclusively on their senses for safety against the wiles of the fisherman, and yet he uses, for the most part, entirely what is provided for him in the shape of tackle, and does as he is told in the arrangement of baits, and his own comportment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As fly fishing increases in popularity and rivers and streams become more congested, anglers must come up with strategies to fool the bright and finicky fish. Through years of experimentation both on the water and at the vise, Lloyd Gonzales has developed techniques for tying artificial mayflies, sedges, stoneflies, and baitfish that focus on general styles of flies and variations to deal with specific challenges to catch tricky trout. This modern fly-style approach, focusing on a fly's design and construction rather than on a specific pattern, is applicable to more situations and more easily adjusted to match local species than the traditional pattern approach. The fly-style approach is orderly-styles progress through the book, establishing a framework that can support any skill level and type of water-and fluid, allowing for experimentation and a personal flair, a key to tying flies that bring success on fly-saturated pressured water.

The deeply personal story of a father learning to share his love of nature with his children, not through the indoor lens of words or pictures, but directly, palpably, by exploring the natural world as they forage, cook and eat from the woods and sea. This compelling, masterfully written tale follows Dylan Tomine and his family through four seasons as they hunt chanterelles, fish for salmon, dig clams and gather at the kitchen table, mouths watering, to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Closer to the Ground captures the beauty and surprise of the natural world — and the ways it teaches us how to live — with humor, gratitude and a nose for adventure as keen as a child’s.
