Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental flutter data are presented in the Mach number range between 5 and 8 for configurations supplementary to those for which data are presented in the basic report. The results of correlative analyses to determine the accuracyAND APPLICABILITY OF PISTON THEORY IN PREDICTING THE AEROELASTIC INSTABILITY OF THESE CONFIGURATIONS IN THIS SPEED RANGE ARE ALSO INCLUDED. A total of 32 semirigid (roll-pitch) flutter data points were obtained during the experimental phase of the program to determine the effects of Mach number, aspect ratio, leading-edge bluntness and thickness on flutter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental program was conducted in the Mach number range 5 less than or equal to M less than or equal to 10 to determine the effects of frequency ratio, Mach number, mass ratio, pitch damping and profile on the flutter characteristics of semirigid models having square planforms. Correlative flutter analyses were conducted for most of the configurations tested using piston theory aerodynamics. In addition, some analyses were conducted using experimentally measured values of the quasistatic piston theory aerodynamic coefficients. The major results of the investigation were: (1) The unpredicted destabilizing trend of the flutter velocity index previously noted in the Mach number range 6 less than or equal to M less than or equal to 8 is not caused by either the independent or combined effects of mass ratio and/or the structural damping coefficient in the pitch degree of freedom. (2) Regardless of the model parameters, or the Mach number at which the model was tested, an unpredicted limiting value of the frequency ratio was found below which flutter could not be obtained. (3) The limiting value of the frequency ratio below which flutter could not be obtained, appears to be a function of the center-of-gravity and the center-of-pressure position, but not of Mach number. This book was released on 1964 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an experimental and analytical flutter investigation of a low aspect ratio lifting surface with a 70 degree leading edge sweep angle, and thickness ratios of 3%, 6%, and 9% in the hypersonic speed range from M = 5.0 to M = 8.0. The 6% thickness ratio models were tested at uncoupled frequency ratios of 0.60, 0.75, and 0.90. The models used were of the semirigid type with a double wedge leading edge to 15% chord with constant thickness from the 15% chord to a blunt trailing edge. All experimental flutter configurations were analyzed using an analog representation of a quasi-steady flutter solution. The aerodynamic representations investigated were experimentally obtained static aerodynamic force coefficients and aerodynamic force coefficients derived from steady-state, two-dimensional, shock-expansion techniques with sweep angle corrections. The relative effect on the flutter characteristics of inclusion of piston theory derived rate terms in the aerodynamics was investigated for configurations.
