Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this modern, comprehensive text covers both analysis and design of piping systems. The authors begin with a review of basic hydraulic principles, with emphasis on their use in pumped pipelines, manifolds, and the analysis and design of large pipe networks. After the reader obtains an understanding of how these principles are implemented in computer solutions for steady state problems, the focus then turns to unsteady hydraulics. These are covered at three levels:

Book excerpt: Water hammer during multi-phase flow is rather complex, but in some cases an upper limit to the pressure surge magnitude during water hammer can be estimated. In the case considered here, a two mile long pipeline with a single high point was permitted to partially drain. Due to gravitational effects, air bubbles up through the pipe line to its highest point, but the time required for air to reach the top of the pipe is rather long. Consequently, some transients caused by valve operations are affected by air entrapment and some are not. The intent of this research was to investigate the complex interactions between air, water vapor, and liquid during water hammer in a long pipe with one end of the pipe open to atmospheric conditions. To understand the system dynamics, experimental data was obtained from a long pipeline with an open end and also from a short, transparent tube. Transient calculations were performed for valve closures and pump operations as applicable. The limitations of available calculation techniques were considered in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamental phenomena of, and computational methods for, hydraulic transients, such as the self-stabilization effect, restriction of the Joukowsky equation, real relations between the rigid and elastic water column theories, the role of wave propagation speed, mechanism of the attenuation of pressure fluctuations, etc. A new wave tracking method is described in great detail and, supported by the established conservation and traveling laws of shockwaves, offers a number of advantages. The book puts forward a novel method that allows transient flows to be directly computed at each time node during a transient process, and explains the differences and relations between the rigid and elastic water column theories. To facilitate their use in hydropower applications, the characteristics of pumps and turbines are provided in suitable forms and examples. The book offers a valuable reference guide for engineers and scientists, helping them make transient computations for their own programming, while also contributing to the final standardization of methods for transient computations.

The basic mathematical methods of solution of water hammer and ways of limiting its effects are covered. Detailed description is given of the method of characteristics and the corresponding programs for personal computers, which enables solution of water hammer in a wide variety of hydraulic systems encountered in practice. Examples are given of solution of water hammer of common pipe-line systems as well as calculation of the steady state of flow, the determination of discharge through a pipe-line, measurements of characteristics of valves, pumps, turbines, determination of the operating régime of a valve in order to ensure a desired pressure and discharge curve, etc. This book will be of interest to those civil, mechanical and petroleum engineers dealing with the design and operation of hydraulic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of dollars are spent each year on water distribution systems. Pipe optimization techniques provide an opportunity for potential savings in costs for water supply systems. These optimization techniques include linear programming, non-linear programming, dynamic programming, enumerative approaches, and genetic algorithms. The former four techniques have been applied to pipe network optimization in the research literature over the last 20 years or so. Genetic algorithms provide a new approach to pipe network optimization. Details of this method are considered in this thesis. A global cost analysis of each component in a water supply system is carried out of the genetic algorithm in order to assess the form of the objective function. Traditionally, the analysis an pipeline systems has focused on the steady state. In the current work, a genetic algorithm optimization model, which uses a probabilistic search procedure that emulates Darwinian natural selection, is coupled with a transient hydraulic simulation model to generate and evaluate trial pipe network designs in search of an optimal solution. A new and powerful penalty function is also developed for pressure violations distinguishing steady state and transient conditions. The genetic algorithm search is applied to a case study which demonstrates its flexibility and the opportunity for significant cost saving offered by this method.
