Book excerpt: 2019 IACP Award Winner in the Compiliations Category On the occasion of Cook's Illustrated's 25th anniversary, we've gathered together our most extraordinary recipes and innovations from the past quarter-century in this hands-on book packed with practical tips and techniques. These recipes tell the story of how Cook's Illustrated has changed American home cooking through its signature blend of rigorous testing, culinary research, science, and unorthodox approaches to developing foolproof recipes. As fans know, a big part of what makes the magazine so trustworthy (and enjoyable to read) is the essays that accompany each recipe, tracing from initial brainstorming to aha moments (and the occasional catastrophe) to final success. Rarely republished since they first appeared, these feature-length stories celebrate the art of food writing and the extensive work that goes into every recipe. In addition to the recipes, essays, and helpful sidebars, this book also features the trademark black-and-white illustrations that have become synonymous with Cook's Illustrated, creative use of the beloved front- and back-cover art, and a new addition: gorgeous, full-color photographs of each dish. Featured recipes include: Perfect corn on the cob that never gets boiled, ultracreamy tomato soup that's completely dairy-free, the fastest roast chicken recipe, "oven-grilled" London broil, and ingenious, low-key approaches to traditionally high-fuss recipes such as risotto, French fries, pie crust, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary and evolutionary theorists have very different views about change; Fein writes in favour of evolution. He proposes an integrated model of social evolution, one that accounts for the complexity, inconclusiveness, and impediments that characterize social transformations. This multi-dimensional approach recognizes that change is always saturated in conflict. Major changes are rarely initiated by conscious decisions that are automatically implemented; power and morality generally control the direction that significant alterations take. Fein explains how the social generalist dilemma places our need for both flexibility and stability in opposition to each other such that non-rational mechanisms are needed to produce a solution. He also describes how an "inverse force rule" dictates that small societies are bound together by strong social forces, whereas large ones are secured by weak forces. This suggests that social roles are likely to become professionalized over time.If social change is, in fact, analogous to natural rather than artificial selection, we may be in the midst of an only partially predictable middle class revolution. Indeed, the current impasse between liberals and conservatives may be evidence that we are in the consolidation phase of this process. Should this be the case, a paradigm shift, not a classical revolution, is in our future.

It's a faith-driven book propelled with the mindset of reason and science, precisely psychology, economics, sociology, anthropology, etc. Beginning with his own successful life-transforming experiences driven by his grit mindset and the resilient spirit of God at work in him, the author draws from similar experiences of icons of success such as Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos, Tony Elumelu, Mark Zuckerberg, Serena Williams, Anderson Cooper, Arianna Huffington, etc., to show that in this COVID-19-proplelled global economy and even beyond, you can still turn your revolutionary revelations and ideas into trailblazing products and services for the good of humanity by practicing the time-tested principles detailed in this book. The principles are God-ordained for humans to succeed in their chosen fields or endeavors. No matter the field of your career--from technology to theology or from architecture to agriculture--these principles will enable you to revolutionize your ideas and visions into products, thereby earning you huge success while benefiting the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic Revolutionary Cultures, 1789-1861 argues that the revolutionary era constituted a coherent chapter in transatlantic history and that individual revolutions were connected to a broader, transatlantic and transnational frame. As a composite, the essays place instances of political upheaval during the long nineteenth century in Europe and the Americas in a common narrative and offer a new interpretation on their seeming asynchrony. In the age of revolutions the formation of political communities and cultural interactions were closely connected over time and space. Reciprocal connections arose from discussions on the nature of history, deliberations about constitutional models, as well as the reception of revolutions in popular culture. These various levels of cultural and intellectual interchange we term “transatlantic revolutionary cultures.” Contributors are: Ulrike Bock, Anne Bruch, Peter Fischer, Mischa Honeck, Raphael Hörmann, Charlotte A. Lerg, Marc H. Lerner, Michael L. Miller, Timothy Mason Roberts, and Heléna Tóth.

Book excerpt: This book explores the role played by families in the Russian revolutionary movement and the first decades of the Soviet regime. While revolutionaries were expected to sever all family ties or at the very least put political concerns before personal ones, in practice this was rarely achieved. In the underground, revolutionaries of all stripes, from populists to social-democrats, relied on siblings, spouses, children and parents to help them conduct party tasks, with the appearance of domesticity regularly thwarting police interference. Family networks were also vital when the worst happened and revolutionaries were imprisoned or exiled. After the revolution, these family networks continued to function in the building of the new Soviet regime and amongst the socialist opponents who tried to resist the Bolsheviks. As the Party persecuted its socialist enemies and eventually turned on threats perceived within its ranks, it deliberately included the spouses and relatives of its opponents in an attempt to destroy family networks for good.

Book excerpt: The New York Times calls him "America's number one Buddhist." He is the co-founder of Tibet House New York, was the first American Tibetan Buddhist monk, and has shared a thirty-five-year friendship with the Dalai Lama. Now, Robert Thurman presents his first completely original book, an introduction to Buddhism and "an inspiring guide to incorporating Buddhist wisdom into daily life" (USA Today). Written with insight, enthusiasm, and impeccable scholarship, Inner Revolution is not only a national bestseller and practical primer on one of the world's most fascinating traditions, but it is also a wide-ranging look at the course of our civilization--and how we can alter it for the better. "Part spiritual memoir, part philosophical treatise and part religious history, Thurman's book is a passionate declaration of the possibilities of renewing the world" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
