It is man's love of loveliness carried to excess man's craving for the ideal grown to a fine lunacy. It is piquant won derment; culminated beauty that, for all its combination of telling and select items, can still contrive to look natural, debonair, native to its place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colour in the Flower Garden I am strongly of opinion that the possession of a quantity of plants, however good the plants may be themselves and however ample their number, does not make a garden it only makes a collection. Having got the plants, the great thing is to use them with careful selection and definite intention. Merely having them, or having them planted unassorted in garden. Spaces, is only like having a box of paints from the best colourman, or, to go one step further, it is like having portions of these paints set out upon a palette. This does not constitute a picture; and it seems to me that the duty we owe to our gardens and to our own bettering in our gardens is so to use the plants that they shall form beautiful pictures; and that, while delighting our eyes, they should be always training those eyes to a more exalted criticism to a state of mind and artistic conscience that will not tolerate bad or careless combination or any sort of misuse of plants, but in which it becomes a point of honour to be always striving for the best. It is just in the way it is done that lies the whole difference between commonplace gardening and gar dening that may rightly claim to rank as a fine art. Given the same space of ground and the same material, they may either be fashioned into a dream of beauty, a place of perfect rest and refreshment of mind and body - a series of soul-satisfying pictures - a treasure of well-set jewels; or they may be so misused that everything is jarring and displeasing. To learn how to perceive the difference and how to do right is to apprehend gardening as a fine art. In practice it is to place every plant or group of plants with such thoughtful care and definite intention that they shall form apart of a harmonious whole, and that successive portions, or in some cases even single details, shall show a series of pictures. It is so to regulate the trees and undergrowth of the wood that their lines and masses come into beautiful form and harmonious proportion; it is to be always watching, noting and doing, and putting oneself meanwhile into closest acquaintance and sympathy with the growing things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Flower Garden: With Illustrative Notes It was written with a twofold object: to give in the smallest compass an outline history of English gardens, and to show once again what makes the true charm and happiness of a garden. Many - perhaps too partial - friends have urged me to reprint this article. They have reminded me that, when the immediate circulation of any one number of a Review has ceased, its articles are virtually lost and buried, and they assure me that there are readers who may not have already seen, and who would yet care to read, this Essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower Garden, or Chapters on Flowers: A Sequel to Floral Biography This habit may be unconsciously acquired while life itself is but a gay garden of sweets, and the secret language of inexperienced confidence is, I shall see no sorrow: but it needs somewhat more than a sip of the bitters mingled for God's children in this mor tal state to excite a relish for the mysterious sweetness thus reserved to qualify the unpalatable draught. God has given us richly all things to enjoy: the worldling' may possess, but the Christian alone can enjoy these gifts. And as through the merely me chanical arrangement of types and paper, ink and pasteboard, into certain forms, a book is produced which shall contain a correct transcript of the reveal ed word, and become, under divine operation, the means of bringing life eternal within the grasp of its readers, so on many an inanimate object, formed, like our. Selves, from the element of earth, a blessing is made to rest, - a name is written, which no man can know save he that receiveth it as a gift from God. Fig? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook to the Flower Garden and Greenhouse The third edition of this work presented such a total change from the first two that it could hardly be recognised, and at the eleventh hour I had merely an Opportunity of disclaiming all the alterations. In revising the work for the fourth edition I have removed nearly eighty pages which were taken from, and belonged to, botanical dictionaries, and have restored much that had been taken away to make room for matter not original. I have not disturbed the alphabetical arrangement, although I have expunged the names of many genera and species of no earthly use to the florist; for I consider the work belongs to the popular flowers, and not to botanical collections, besides which I have a thorough deep-rooted aversion to Copying from others. I trust I have improved even upon the original edition, and at least have the satisfaction of knowing it is all my own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Garden Flowers IN presenting the fifth bouquet of flowers from the home garden, occasion is made for returning thanks for the generous manner in which, with all their faults, the several gatherings have been received. The form of the work compels concentration, and it is well known that to write a long letter is much easier than to write a short one. It has sometimes troubled me that the brief space at command for presenting information compelled me to omit matters which, at the moment of writing, appeared to me of the highest importance. But now, when the task is completed, I see clearly that in the lightest of brief sketches there may often be conveyed a considerable amount of useful information, and perhaps in such a case as the present all that is really required. Unhappily, the shortness of the story is no defence against the intrusion of error, and while returning thanks for the cordial reception which the former volumes of the work have obtained, it is necessary to ask pardon for any slips of the pen that may be discovered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of a Flower Garden A beautiful arrangement of the planting would be to run a triple row of tulips, hyacinths or narcissi along the edges of all the beds and sow English daisy seed, pansies, ageratums or other low-growing plants among them to cover the ground when they are through blooming. On the less sunny borders the lobelias would be beautiful, as would the dwarf morn ing glories which remain open all day. The tufted pansies are permanent and beautiful border plants, especially the yellow ones, and one can compose very artistic color schemes by using flowers that harmonize with the edging plants in the different beds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flower Garden, or Monthly Calendar of Practical Directions for the Culture of Flowers Garden ensures a pretty general knowledge of its management. I cannot create a florist by a stroke of my pen, any more than I can make a neat gardener in a summary way, out of a common laborer, who never had a rake in his hand. That the present hints should be presented in Calen dar form, appears advisable, to avoid confusion, and to bring the respective flowers, and their culture, under immediate consideration, at the precise time they ought to meet attentio'n; and as in the Kitchen Garden I made that form to commence with the month of November, SO likewise may the Floral year, with great propriety, be considered to begin with the same month, the culture of its earliest products being then to be attended to, and preparation made for their appear ance in the following spring.
