Book excerpt: This authoritative guide is the product of many years of botanical surveying, observations and systematic research both in the Falkland Islands and in the herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. A collaboration between Falklands Conservation and Kew, this guide brings together for the first-time descriptions of all the vascular plants, both native and non-native that have been recorded across the Falkland Islands during its rich botanical history. The guide covers in detail the 181 vascular plants that have been described as native to these islands as well as more than 250 widespread non-native plants, highlighting those that have become invasive and pose a threat to native plants and habitats. The guide is fully illustrated with photographs to enable field identification. Keys to the major groups of plants are included as well as detailed keys for many families including Apiaceae, Astearceae, Cyperaceae, Poaceae and Orchidaceae. Individual species entries include plant descriptions, distribution data, conservation status and other useful notes and field characters. There are also brief illustrated descriptions of the 22 habitat types recognised in the Falkland Islands. The guide is aimed at all those interested in learning more about this fascinating flora. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated third edition of Bradt’s Falkland Islands remains the only detailed and wide-ranging standalone travel guidebook to this British Overseas Territory and is ideal for independent, cruise-ship and tour-group visitors alike. It includes all recent information needed for a smooth trip, including on restaurants and hotels in Stanley, conservation issues, wildlife-watching trips, history and how to explore beyond the capital. The main islands – East and West Falkland – are covered, as are the smaller Bleaker, Kidney, Sea Lion, Pebble, New, West Point, Carcass, Saunders, Keppel, Weddell, Staats and Beaver islands. Situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, over 500 km from South America, the Falkland Islands are one of the world’s truly wild places, full of unspoilt scenery and wide vistas. A photographer’s delight and a must-visit location for those interested in the wild outdoors, the islands are home to major populations of albatrosses, penguins, dolphins, seals and other wildlife plus 3,600 people. It’s not all about penguins, though, as the islands’ spectacular scenery, comfortable accommodation, good wholesome British food and welcoming people create a wonderful place to visit. The thriving city of Stanley gives way to the wild open spaces of camp (rural areas) with its scattered settlements, long sandy beaches, isolated islands and rocky outcrops. History enthusiasts will be in their element, visiting sites ranging from the islands’ first British settlement to areas that were significant during the 1982 war. With Bradt’s Falkland Islands you can plan how to fly between islands, drive across the camp in a 4x4 vehicle, visit multiple penguin colonies (where these charismatic birds behave as if you are not there), sample smoko (a wide range of cakes and biscuits, served during a morning or afternoon tea break), watch black-browed albatrosses at their nest, be investigated by ‘Johnny Rooks’ (curious birds of prey), spot dolphins in the shallows, visit the magnificent collection of artefacts from around the islands at Stanley’s Historic Dockyard Museum and learn from local residents about life in this wildest of places. Whatever your interest, this is the essential guide for a successful trip.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rolf Dahlgren and I embarked on preparing this book series, Rolf took prime responsibility for monocotyledons, which had interested him for a long time. After finishing his comparative study and family classification of the mono cots, he devoted much energy to the acquisition and editing of family treatments for the present series. After his untimely death, Peter Goldblatt, who had worked with him, continued to handle further incoming monocot manuscripts until, in the early 1990s, his other obligations no longer allowed him to continue. At that time, some 30 manuscripts in various states of perfection had accumulated, which seemed to form a solid basis for a speedy completion of the FGVP monocots; with the exception of the grasses and orchids which would appear in separate volumes. I felt a strong obligation to do everything to help in publishing the manuscripts that had been put into our hands. I finally decided to take charge of them personally, although during my life as a botanist I had never seriously been interested in mono cots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plant book aims to help identify flowering plants to genus and family level anywhere in the world. In 2014 there were very few available works which were both comprehensive and up-to-date for all the flowering plants families and genera of the world. The Flowering Plants Handbook is an easy to use identification guide to the worlds flowering plants designed for both specialists and non-specialists and from beginner to expert. The book contains descriptions of all currently recognised flowering plant families, morphological notes for 6656 genera (all current genera for 398/413 families) and over 3000 images and illustrations. Flowering plants can be identified using the book to family and much of the world's generic diversity in four 'easy' steps. Some plants will be identified correctly quickly, whilst others may require some retracing of steps and take a little more time. The advantage of this book is that it helps the user learn about the classification system and plant diversity during the identification process. This work was compiled and developed using the living, library and herbarium collections at the University of Aberdeen, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas, are a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago consists of over 700 islands, with the two largest being East Falkland and West Falkland. The Falkland Islands has a population of approximately 3,500 people, with most residents living in the capital city of Stanley. English is the official language and the currency is the Falkland Islands pound. The Falkland Islands have a rich history dating back to the 16th century when the Spanish and British both claimed ownership of the islands. In 1833, the British established a permanent settlement and the islands were officially declared a British colony in 1841. In 1982, a conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom broke out over the ownership of the islands, resulting in a 74-day war that claimed the lives of over 900 people. The islands remain a point of political tension between the two countries, with Argentina continuing to claim sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Despite this, the Falkland Islands have become a popular tourist destination known for their unique wildlife, rugged landscapes, and British culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armen Takhtajan is among the greatest authorities in the world on the evolution of plants. This book culminates almost sixty years of the scientist's research of the origin and classification of the flowering plants. It presents a continuation of Dr. Takhtajan’s earlier publications including “Systema Magnoliophytorum” (1987), (in Russian), and “Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants” (1997), (in English). In his latest book, the author presents a concise and significantly revised system of plant classification (‘Takhtajan system’) based on the most recent studies in plant morphology, embryology, phytochemistry, cytology, molecular biology and palynology. Flowering plants are divided into two classes: class Magnoliopsida (or Dicotyledons) includes 8 subclasses, 126 orders, c. 440 families, almost 10,500 genera, and no less than 195,000 species; and class Liliopsida (or Monocotyledons) includes 4 subclasses, 31 orders, 120 families, more than 3,000 genera, and about 65,000 species. This book contains a detailed description of plant orders, and descriptive keys to plant families providing characteristic features of the families and their differences.
