Book Synopsis Reimagining Community Festivals and Events by : Allan Stewart Jepson
Download or read book Reimagining Community Festivals and Events written by Allan Stewart Jepson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates and builds on Alan Clarke (1956–2021) and Allan Jepson’s 2015 book Exploring Community Festivals and Events. It showcases how far the study of community festivals and events has come in the intervening years, and in so doing it is a response to recent calls for researchers to take a more critical approach to event studies. This is an interdisciplinary book that draws together empirical research across a wide range of community event types, sizes and within diverse communities. Chapters in this book are grouped into four themes that highlight the breadth and depth of work being done: reviving and maintaining tradition(s); a focus on belonging; challenges and tensions; and innovations in teaching and research. Another of its core strengths is its international perspective – the book encompasses research from around the world including Turkey, Portugal, Greece, India, the UK, the US, Austria and New Zealand. There is also a diverse range of theoretical lenses applied to the study of community events, and some innovative methodologies used to achieve research aims and objectives. This volume will appeal to students and researchers in the fields of critical event studies, cultural studies, place-making, tourism, music, sociology and geography. Several chapters also provide insights and key learnings for those lecturing and working in event management and industry professionals.
Download or read book CHINESE FESTIVALS written by Li Lùlù and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the most creative and entertaining events of Chinese festivals that have been celebrated with traditional and updated activities. Most ethnic groups are considered through the select materials that contain textual or visual messages for international readers. Related folk traditions and customs are often introduced to provide information for understanding the continuity, polarity and pluralism of Chinese culture. These focuses are presented with historical documents and collected artworks that are helpful for the academic studies of ethnic tradition and fine arts. In addition, relevant poems are selected and rendered into comparable English poetic stanzas. For authenticity, pinyin with tone accompanies most culture-specific words or texts, and this book may be especially helpful for teachers and students of the Chinese language or those who want to speak or write it naturally.

Book Synopsis Making Place through Ritual by : Lea Schulte-Droesch
Download or read book Making Place through Ritual written by Lea Schulte-Droesch and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian indigenous societies are especially known for their elaborate rituals, which offer an excellent chance for studying religion as practice. However, few detailed ethnographic works exist on the ritual practices of these societies. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Jharkhand, India this book offers insights into contemporary, previously not described rituals of the Santal, one of the largest indigenous societies of Central India. Its focus lies on culturally specific notions of place as articulated and created during these rituals. In three chapters the book discusses how the Santal "make place" on different local, regional and global levels through their rituals: They reaffirm their ancestral roots in their land during large sacrificial rituals. They offer sacrifices to the dangerous deities of the forest in exchange for rain. And they claim their region to be a "Santal region" through large festivals celebrated in sacred groves, which they link to national and global discourses of indigeneity and environmentalism. Through an analysis of the rituals of a specific society, this book addresses broader issues. It presents an example of how to study religion as a practical activity. It portrays culture-specific perceptions of the environment. And last, the book underlines the potential that lies in choosing place as a lens to study social phenomena in context.
