Book excerpt: Drama. "For myself and the cast, directing Leslie Scalapino's FLOW has been an extraordinary journey into language and the language in breath, the rhythms of effort to say as precisely as her savage delicacy of thought, her forcing us all to assume nothing in examining the fineness of our implication in each other"--Fiona Templeton.

Book excerpt: North American Women Poets in the 21st Century: Beyond Lyric and Language is an important new addition to the American Poets in the 21st Century series. Like the earlier anthologies, this volume includes generous selections of poetry by some of the best poets of our time as well as illuminating poetics statements and incisive essays on their work. A companion web site will present audio of each poet's work. Calling, Natasha Trethewey Mexico 1969 Why not make a fiction of the mind's fictions? I want to say it begins like this: the trip a pilgrimage, my mother kneeling at the altar of the Black Virgin, enthralled—light streaming in a window, the sun at her back, holy water in a bowl she must have touched. What's left is palimpsest—one memory bleeding into another, overwriting it. How else to explain what remains? The sound of water in a basin I know is white, the sun behind her, light streaming in, her face— as if she were already dead—blurred as it will become. I want to imagine her beforethe altar, rising to meet us, my father lifting me toward her outstretched arms. What else to make of the mind's slick confabulations? What comes back is the sun's dazzle on a pool's surface, light filtered through water closing over my head, my mother—her body between me and the high sun, a corona of light around her face. Why not call it a vision? What I know is this: I was drowning and saw a dark Madonna; someone pulled me through the water's bright ceiling and I rose, initiate, from one life into another.

Book excerpt: For Steve and Terri Irwin, confronting aggressive sixteen-foot gators, hissing deadly snakes, charging rhinos, venomous spiders, huge lizards, and wild reptiles in their own habitats was a part of daily life. Steve’s love for animals began at an early age, when his parents created an animal refuge—instilling in him a respect for Australia’s native wildlife, and some of the most dangerous creatures on Earth. Writing with his wife and soul mate, Terri Irwin, Steve provides intimate insights into their private life away from the cameras. Learn how they first met, how they successfully translated a shared love of animals into a worldwide message of conservation, and how they built one of the largest private animal refuges in Australia.

Book Synopsis Stage Managing Chaos by : Jackie Harvey
Download or read book Stage Managing Chaos written by Jackie Harvey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s London's National Theatre, led by Sir Laurence Olivier, launched an infamous avant garde production of The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria. Concerned that his classical approach would clash with the "enfant terrible" director, Victor Garcia, Olivier enlisted stage manager Jackie Harvey to keep a diary of the often ludicrous, occasionally creative, always challenging rehearsals. Anthony Hopkins and Jim Dale costarred in the surreal two-man piece. Led by the eccentric Garcia, the play quickly descended into a chaotic farce. Missed deadlines, technical hitches, unauthorized nudity and backstage feuds culminated in an unforgettable production, leaving the company debating: Was he a misunderstood genius or a brilliant con-artist? Accompanied by recollections from Hopkins, Dale and others, along with photographs and documents that bring the key players to life, this unique diary provides a snapshot of a crucial period in the history of the National Theatre.
