Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Florida has a unique place in the annals of national history and has been a constant contributor to the country's identity. The 51 men who have served as the state's governors are an essential part of its complex identity and have produced resonant material for historians of all ages. They have been farmers, generals, boat captains, restaurant owners, presidents, and sons of presidents. They have been given the office by both popular mandate and the happenstance of fate. These individuals have represented virtually every category of what it means to be a Floridian. Their lasting legacies can be felt every day by the state's citizens. Since the drainage of the Everglades and the transformation of swamplands into beachfront paradises, Florida has lured Americans from various states to its sunny shores. It has seceded from the Union, determined the final verdict in many presidential elections, was the site of railroad monopolies, developed into a playground of the rich, and is the birthplace of a new kind of theme park--all while being led by these distinct individuals who, at their core, were Floridians first.

Book excerpt: In this exceptional biography, Canter Brown, Jr., removes Ossian Bingley Hart (1821–1874)—a Unionist, the principal founder of the Republican Party in Florida, and a Reconstruction-era governor of the state—from the shadows of history. Through an examination of Hart’s life and career, Brown offers new insight into the political problems of the day—the role of Unionism in Deep South politics in particular—and enriches our understanding of the complexities of Reconstruction. Brown traces Hart’s life from his privileged childhood in the newly founded port town of Jacksonville through his service as a volunteer soldier in the Second Seminole War, his education in South Carolina, and the dawn of his legal and political career on Florida’s Atlantic frontier to his election as governor in 1872 and his premature death sixteen months later. Brown’s multifaceted biography offers a rare glimpse at the persistence of Loyalism in the post-Civil War South and clearly illustrates the pivotal role played by both Loyalists and African Americans in southern politics of that era and how these two groups merged to resist carpetbag rule.

Book excerpt: Ron DeSantis is to Governors what Donald Trump is to Presidents-The Best! Some say Governor Ron DeSantis is the best governor ever. Others admit he is the best current governor in the United States of America. Why? Like Trump, DeSantis has more than delivered on the promises that he made to Floridians upon taking office in January, 2018. He tackles the issues that are important to Floridians and the well-being of the state, and does it now and he promises to continue his policies into the future. His great response to the COVID-19 pandemic is a major area in which he has recently exceled while keeping Florida mostly open and not suffering extensive business losses. Ron DeSantis is one of a kind. Florida has achieved historic accomplishments that are of the utmost importance to Floridians and will bring our state to the next level. In conjunction with the Florida Legislature and federal, state and local partners, Florida has secured major successes for the environment, education, hurricane recovery, economic development, public safety, military, health care and more.Ron DeSantis said that "Every day, I wake up grateful for the opportunity to go to work on behalf of Floridians. While we can reflect and be proud of these accomplishments, there is always more that can be done." The governor has been very aggressive in obtaining vaccine for the state's citizens and having a plan to get it into their arms. Since the beginning of the public health emergency, Governor DeSantis has put Florida's Seniors First. Seniors love him for that Florida was the first state in the nation to vaccinate more than 500,000 individuals 65 years of age or older and is one of only three states to administer vaccines to more than one million people. According to publicly available age demographic data, Florida continues to have the highest percentage of vaccines administered to seniors 65 and older, with vaccinations in that age bracket accounting for nearly 65% of total vaccinations in the state. "Florida remains steadfast in our commitment to putting Seniors First and the numbers speak for themselves" said Governor DeSantis. Florida Walmart and Sam's Club locations are now vaccinating seniors. There are 119 Walmart's in 34 counties who have received more than 25,000 doses of the vaccine and the numbers are growing.Governor Ron DeSantis and Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner highlighted the success of their partnership to put Seniors First in Palm Beach County for vaccine distribution. As of February 5th, over 146,000 seniors 65 and older in Palm Beach County alone have been vaccinated, which represents over 40 percent of all seniors in Palm Beach County. Statewide, Florida continues to far outpace the rest of the nation in vaccinations of seniors with over 1.3 million seniors 65 and older vaccinated, which accounts for 31 percent (or nearly one-third) of all seniors in the state. "Florida continues to lead the nation in vaccinations of seniors, and in counties like Palm Beach, and areas like the Villages, we have made great progress by working with Mayor Kerner to vaccinate over 40 percent of their senior population," said Governor DeSantis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of the Tea Party–dominated GOP, former Florida governor Jeb Bush may appear comparatively moderate, but his record tells a different story. In Conservative Hurricane, Matthew Corrigan probes beyond the mild veneer, the sound bites, and the photo ops to examine the real evidence of Bush’s political leanings—his policies, politics, and legacy as the state’s most powerful governor. After remaking himself from a strident ideologue into a restrained conservative policy wonk, Bush became Florida’s first two-term Republican governor. The small-government conservative—who in his second inaugural address dreamed of an idyllic Tallahassee free of government employees—was unstoppable. He presided over the largest accumulation of executive branch authority in the state’s history and advanced a multitude of social and economic reforms, the effects of which are still felt in the Sunshine State today. It was the beginning of a new kind of conservative activism, one that has only gained strength in the years since Bush left office. From the culture wars to the management of state government, Corrigan examines the governor’s indelible mark on Florida. He demonstrates how the issues most closely associated with Bush’s leadership, including education reform, end-of-life decisions, and gun rights, would guide Republican governors in other states as they rode the rising tide of conservative populism. For anyone curious about a potential Jeb Bush presidency, this book is required reading.

Book excerpt: Inside the reinvention of Florida politics Florida Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Florida Nonfiction Reubin Askew was swept into the governor's office in 1970 as part of a remarkable wave of progressive politics and legislative reform in Florida. A man of uncompromising principle and independence, he was elected primarily on a platform of tax reform. In the years that followed, Askew led a group of politicians from both parties who sought--and achieved--judicial reform, redistricting, busing and desegregation, the end of the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the Sunshine Amendment, and much more. This period was truly a golden age of Florida politics, and Martin Dyckman's narrative is well written, fast paced, and reads like a novel. Dyckman also reveals how the return of special interests, the rise of partisan politics, unlimited campaign spending, term limits, gerrymandering, and more have eroded the achievements of the Golden Age in subsequent decades.

Book excerpt: Rick Scott, a super rich former hospital executive who headed a major corporation that defrauded the U.S. government of many millions of dollars, bought the governorship of Florida in 2010. Inaugurated in January 2011, he quickly became the "most unpopular" governor in America, and recently AlterNet named him the nation's worst" governor. This book, which deals with the first 16 months of Scott's 4-year term, is a j'accuse a citizen's complaint against the governor and his disastrous policies that not only have done great harm to Florida but enriched and empowered a few at the expense of the many. An updated edition of the book is planned for 2014, when Scott has vowed to seek re-election.
