Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence: And of the Affairs of Italy; From the Earliest Times to the Death of Lorenzo the Magnificent Together With the Prince and Various Historical Tracts Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli is youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Caesar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli's report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of Caesar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterward exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his "Prince." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence Iccolo machiavelli received in the year 1520, from Giulio de' Medici, the commission to write his [storie Fiorentine. His Dedication of the completed work to Pope Clement VII. Was written in I 527, the year of Machiavelli's death. This book has a place of honour in the history Of Modern Literature, as the first work in which the Annal-writing of {he Chronicler gave place to the more artistic shaping of a. History that found in political societies of man the operation of first principles of life under varying social conditions. With simple grouping of details into coherent chapters, Machiavelli first shows how the shaping of Italian states, the making of modern Italy, produced conditions that affected from within and from without the public life of Florence. Then he begins in his second book the History of Florence herself, which he brings down to his own time, and closes with the death of Lorenzo de' Medici; natural end of an epoch in the History of Florence. Machiavelli's own age at that time was twenty-three. The English version here given of Machiavelli's History is reprinted from the first complete translation of The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly and faith fully translated into English. London, folio, 1675. Twenty years later there was a second edition of this folio, and there was a third edition in 1720. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Commonwealth of Florence, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Earliest Independence of the Commune to the Fall of the Republic in 1531 Any attempt, however, to develop these conclusions, as arising from the consideration of the history here offered to the reader, as well as any setting forth of the numerous other grounds on which the choice of Florence for the definitive capital of Italy may be well believed to be the wisest that could have been made, would be out of place here. The latter belong to various classes of subjects foreign to the proper business of this work; and the deductions which lead to the former must be left to the appreciation of the reader of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By'gone Florence: Firenze Scomparsa I would not by this deny the right of modern style and requirements to manifest itself in its own way, but as there is ample space where this may be done, allowing full swing to every architectural vagary and extravagance, without destroying the record of past ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florence Its History, the Medici, the Humanists, Letters, Arts Italy in the thirteenth century carried on and brought to its crowning point the work of civilization which France in the twelfth century had started by means of the crusades, the establishment of communal franchises, and the foundation of the University Of Paris. The symbol created by the genius Of Lucre tius, where the successive labor Of generations is rep resented by running-men passing their torches from hand to hand, had never been realized with so much grandeur; the sacred torches had fallen from French hands, and had been picked up by Italy, in whose grasp they emitted a light which dazzled the whole world. Rome, notwithstanding the Barbarian invasion, the schism, and the exile Of the Papacy, still retained the recollection Of her glorious past, brought even more vividly before her by the superb monuments which had withstood the ravages Of time and Of man. But even Rome, like the rest of Italy, acknowledged the superiority of Florence comparable to Athens itself, and all the cities Of Italy did homage to her genius. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Florence The present volume is intended to supply a popular history of the Florentine Republic, in such a form that it can also be used as a guide-book. It has been my endeavour, while keeping within the necessary limits of this series of Me val Towns to point out briefly the most salient features in the story of Florence, to tell again the tale of those of her streets and buildings, and indicate those of her artistic treasures, which are either most intimately connected with that story or most beautiful in themselves. Those who know best what an intensely fascinating and many-sided history that of Florence has been, who hare studied most closely the work and characters of those strange and wonderful personalities who have lived within (and, the case of the greatest, died without) her walls, will best appreciate my difficulty in compressing even a portion of all this wealth and profusion into the narrow bounds enjoined by the aim and scope of this book. Much has necessarily been curtailed over which it would have been tempting to linger, much inevitably omitted which the historian could not have passed over, nor the compiler of a guide-book failed to mention. In what I have selected for treatment and what omitted, I have usually let myself be guided by the remembrance of my own needs when I first commenced to visit Florence and to study her arts and history.
