Nightingale's Addresses to Probationers and Nurses of the Nightingale School at St. Thomas's Hospital Between 1872 and 1900 Miss Nightingale used, when she was able, to send an annual letter or address to the probationer-nurses of the Nightin gale School at St. Thomas' Hospital, and the nurses who have been trained there.1 These addresses were usually read aloud by Sir Harry Verney, the chairman of the Nightingale Fund, In the presence of the probationers and nurses, and a printed copy or a lithographed facsimile of the manuscript was given to each of the nurses present, for private use only. A few also were written for the Nightingale Nurses serving in Edinburgh. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Ever Yours, Florence Nightingale by : Florence Nightingale
Download or read book Ever Yours, Florence Nightingale written by Florence Nightingale and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, Florence Nightingale is the most famous woman of her day, second only perhaps to Queen Victoria. Celebrated and beloved by the public and her friends, considered an irritant by politicians and bureaucrats, the great reformer remains a figure of considerable controversy. In this full 'life in letters' we see her at first hand. Martha Vicinus and Bea Nergaard weave together a narrative account and a selection of her letters in such a way as to create--in Nightingale's own words--a fascinating portrayal of the woman, her career, and her concerns.
Book Synopsis My Dear Children by : Florence Nightingale
Download or read book My Dear Children written by Florence Nightingale and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithographed copy of a holograph letter written by Florence Nightingale on 28 May 1900, the last of the annual letters or addresses sent to the probationer-nurses of the Nightingale School at St Thomas’ Hospital. The preface to a published selection of these letters: Florence Nightingale to her nurses (London : Macmillan, 1914) states that the addresses were read aloud “and a printed copy or a lithographed facsimile of the manuscript was given to each of the nurses present, ‘for private use only'". Written after she reached middle age, and as a teacher of long experience to much younger pupils; we see in the letter something at least of what constituted Miss Nightingale's power, her ernest care for her nurses, and her intense desire that they should be 'perfect'. Constitutes an interesting specimen of lithographic printing of the period.

Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale is famous as the ""lady with the lamp"" in the Crimean War, 1854-56. There is a massive amount of literature on this work, but, as editor Lynn McDonald shows, it is often erroneous, and films and press reporting on it have been even less accurate. The Crimean War reports on Nightingale's correspondence from the war hospitals and on the staggering amount of work she did post-war to ensure that the appalling death rate from disease (higher than that from bullets) did not recur. This volume contains much on Nightingale's efforts to achieve real reforms. He.
Book Synopsis Notes on Nightingale by : Sioban Nelson
Download or read book Notes on Nightingale written by Sioban Nelson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale remains an inspiration to nurses around the world for her pioneering work treating wounded British soldiers during the Crimean War; authorship of Notes on Nursing, the foundational text for nursing practice; establishment of the world's first nursing school; and advocacy for the hygienic treatment of patients and sanitary design of hospitals. In Notes on Nightingale, nursing historians and scholars offer their valuable reflections on Nightingale and analysis of her role in the profession a century after her death on 13 August 1910 and 150 years since the Nightingale School of Nursing (now the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery at King's College, London) opened its doors to probationers at St Thomas' Hospital. There is a great deal of controversy about Nightingale—opinions about her life and work range from blind worship to blanket denunciation. The question of Nightingale and her place in nursing history and in contemporary nursing discourse is a topic of continuing interest for nursing students, teachers, and professional associations. This book offers new scholarship on Nightingale's work in the Crimea and the British colonies and her connection to the emerging science of statistics, as well as valuable reevaluations of her evolving legacy and the surrounding myths, symbolism, and misconceptions.
