Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book on Uttarakhand begins its discussion by not the issues of policy but rather the rich heritage of flaura and fauna that Uttarakhand possesses and seeks to explain methods in which they can be used to strengthen the economy of the state. The book proposes a model for Uttarakhand that can be witnessed to be a developmental stalwart for the state. The model draws a logical corollary from the example of a similarly sized state i.e., Switzerland, the aim being to propose a developmental model that can be so adopted by the state that the economy and welfare of the state-dwellers is boosted many fold. The book then further seeks to analyse the pre-existing condition of security and defence in the state and unveils the existing threats to security that have their presence in the state. The author seeks to identi- fy and illuminate administrative deficiencies and extend develop- mental solutions to the government to bring Kumaon and Garhwal administrative divisions at par with each other. It also touches upon the rising menace of alcoholism and drug abuse in the state known as 'Dev bhoomi' and develop effective solutions to tackle the problem. The book would provide the readers with effective solutions to those issues of public policy and enable them to chisel their own critical thinking and look at the issues of public policy with the lens of an administrator.

Book Synopsis Islamization in Modern South Asia by : David Emmanuel Singh
Download or read book Islamization in Modern South Asia written by David Emmanuel Singh and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the religious identity of the indigenous Gujjars living in Rajaji National Park (RNP), Uttarakhand, India. In the broader context of forest conservation discourse, steps taken by the local government to relocate the Gujjars outside RNP have been crucial in their choice to associate with NGOs and Deobandi Muslims. These intersecting associations constitute the context of their transitioning religious identity. The book presents a rich account of the actual process of Islamization through the collaborative agency of Deobandi madrasas and Tablighi Jama‘at. Based on documents and interviews collected over four years, it constructs a particular case of Deobandi reform and also balances this with a layered description of the Gujjar responses. It argues that in their association with the Deobandis, the Gujjars internalized the normative dimensions of beliefs and practices but not at the expense of their traditional Hindu-folk culture. This capacity for adaptation bodes well for the Gujjars, but their proper integration with wider society seems assured only in association with the Deobandis. Consequently this research also points toward the role of Islam in integrating marginal groups in the wider context of society in South Asia.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity: An Overview by : Mukesh Kumar
Download or read book Biodiversity: An Overview written by Mukesh Kumar and published by I K International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s phytodiversity is one of the most significant in the world. India is one of the twelve mega-biodiversity centers in the world and also an important center of origin of agrobiodiversity. It is therefore, very important to study, document and conserve the plant wealth of India and also of the world before its possible extinction. There are convincing scientific, economic and sociological reasons for giving priority to the conservation of the major centers of plant diversity throughout the world. The strategies to conserve the biodiversity include establishment of protected area network and corridors with emphasis on appropriate levels of management, reduction of anthropogenic pressure on natural populations by cultivating them elsewhere, programmes of augmentation, reintroduction and introduction of target taxa, restoration of degraded habitats, etc. The conservation strategies can be either, in-situ conservation of genetic resources within their ecosystem and natural habitat or ex-situ conservation of components of genetic material of biological diversity outside their natural habitat. The choice of conservation strategy depends upon the nature of the material to be conserved, i.e., the life cycle and mode of reproduction, size of individual population and ecological status. Ex-situ techniques include the establishment of botanical and zoological gardens, banks of pollen, seed tissue culture, DNA, etc. Establishment of forest reserves, national parks, protected areas and on farm conservation of valuable plant varieties is being promoted to facilitate their in-situ conservation.
