Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about the key elements required for designing, building and controlling effective artificial swarms comprised of multiple moving physical agents. Therefore this book presents the fundamentals of each of those key elements in the particular frame of dynamic swarming, specifically exposing the profound connections between these elements and establish some general design principles for swarming behaviors. This scientific endeavor requires an inter-disciplinary approach: biomimetic inspiration from ethology and ecology, study of social information flow, analysis of temporal and adaptive signaling network of interaction, considerations of control of networked real-time systems, and lastly, elements of complex adaptive dynamical systems. This book offers a completely new perspective on the scientific understanding of dynamic collective behaviors thanks to its multi-disciplinary approach and its focus on artificial swarm of physical agents. Two of the key problems in understanding the emergence of swarm intelligent behaviors are identifying the social interaction rules a.k.a. the behavioral algorithm and uncovering how information flows between swarming agents. While most books about swarm dynamics have been focusing on the former, this book emphasizes the much-less discussed topic of distributed information flow, always with the aim of establishing general design principles.

Book excerpt: Words: A User's Guide is an accessible and invaluable reference that is ideal for students, business people and advanced learners of English. The book is structured in groups of words that may be confused because they sound alike, look alike or seem to have similar meanings, and this approach makes it much more intuitive and easy to use than a dictionary. Contrasting over 5000 words (such as habitable and inhabitable, precipitation and rainfall, reigns and reins), Words: a User’s Guide provides examples of usage adapted from large national databases of contemporary English, and illustrates each headword in typical contexts and phrases. This book gives you straightforward answers, and helps with pronunciation, spelling, style and levels of formality. For those working internationally it presents international standards and compares usage in Britain and the USA. Words: A User’s Guide is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to communicate well in written and spoken English. "At last! A book about the use of words that clarifies and de-mystifies in an eminently usable way. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to write well. It is a book to keep." Sandy Gilkes, Head of the Centre for Academic Practice, University of Northampton "Rigorous, fresh, intriguing and downright useful, it deserves a place on every properly stocked reference shelf." Brian Cathcart, Professor of Journalism, Kingston University "From the pedantic to the permissive, everyone who’s interested in the English language and the way we speak and write it will want a copy of this practical, entertaining book." Wynford Hicks (author of Quite Literally and The Basics of English Usage)

The first part of the book covers approximately 4000 carefully selected words, focusing on groups of confusable words that sound alike, look alike or are frequently mixed up. The authors help to solve academic dilemmas, such as correct usage of the apostrophe and the crucial difference between infer and imply. Examples of good usage are drawn from corpora such as the British National Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English. The second part covers the key characteristics of formal English in a substantial reference section, comprising: • stylistic features • punctuation • English grammar • the use of numbers • email writing. This is the essential reference text for all students working on improving their academic writing skills. Visit the companion website for a range of supporting exercises: www.routledge.com/cw/clark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First of all other, I find No Grammar Tears very informative. What amazes me is the kind of dedication and patience Marthus-Adden spent in writing this book. This is because this kind of genre actually needs full attention. Truly, whatever he has written is precise and correct. I really admire his generosity of sharing his knowledge about English owing to the fact that English is his second language. What is good about the book is that the writer wrote it in a manner that readers can easily understand it. In other words, what makes this book different from the other English grammar books in the market is that it is more user-friendly, which means he wrote it in a manner that can easily be understood, especially by those who just learned English and want to learn more. Correctly put, this book is a guide to those who wants to learn English on their own. As a matter of fact, he has a knowledge check in every subject he has discussed in this book. He catered everything, especially in the part on how to construct sentences, which are very precise and which make it very easy to learn the book. He did not change anything at all in terms of the right way to speak and learn English, but instead he made it easier and more convenient for those people whose English is not their first language. In point of fact, he wrote this book not because he wants to show off to the world that he is a good grammarian, but because he wants to help those struggling to learn English. The book therefore deserves recognition because he is actually giving a favour to those who can't afford to have a private tutor to teach them how to speak English correctly. I must, in conclusion, admit that this book will really help those people who want to learn English language; those people who are striving to speak perfect English; and those people that English is their second language. I will therefore commend the author for this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do bird flocks, bacterial swarms, cell tissues, and cytoskeletal fluids have in common? They are all examples of active matter. This book explores how scientists in various disciplines, from physics to biology, have collated a solid corpus of experimental designs and theories during the last two decades to decipher active systems. The book addresses, from a multidisciplinary viewpoint, the field of active matter at a colloidal scale. Concepts, experiments, and theoretical models are put side by side to fully illuminate the subtilities of active systems. A large variety of subjects, from microswimmers or driven colloids to self-organized active fluids, are analysed within a unified perspective. Generic collective effects of self-propelled or driven colloids, such as motility-induced flocking, and new paradigms, such as the celebrated concept of active nematics in reconstituted protein-based fluids, are discussed using well-known experimental scenarios and recognized theories. Topics are covered with rigor and in a self-consistent way, reaching both practitioners and newcomers to the field. The diversity of topics and conceptual challenges in active matter have long hampered the chance to explore the field with a general perspective. This monograph, the first single-authored title on active matter, is intended to fill this gap by bridging disparate experimental and theoretical interests from colloidal soft matter to cell biophysics.

This carefully edited book presents how natural groupings such as fish schools, bird flocks, deer herds etc. coordinate themselves and move so flawlessly, often without an apparent leader or any form of centralized control. It shows how the underlying principles of cooperative control may be used for groups of mobile autonomous agents to help enable a large group of autonomous robotic vehicles in the air, on land or sea or underwater, to collectively accomplish useful tasks such as distributed, adaptive scientific data gathering, search and rescue, or reconnaissance.
