Download or read book Floating Down the Liffey written by Turlough O'Neill and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a simple plan for each of them. Cathal wants money, Anto wants money and to be with Laura, and Laura wants to escape a life of poverty. Life however is never that simple. The three young Dubliners slide down the road of improvisedcrime in an effort to realize their dreams. In a cascade ofclueless effort and bizarre schemes, the three slip further into crime andthe strange life of the Irish underworld. Unlike the boys, however, Laura has a plan for getting out before she gets in over her head. All she has to do is stay the course until that one big score that will give her a way out of crime and poverty. Sooner or later they have to get there, right? Anto and Cathal have it sussed: after all, how difficult could crime be? The police, their fellow criminals, and those who would not be conned all contribute to the answer as the trio and their friends scramble onwards. "Turlough O'Neill's keen ear for dialogue and cynical affection for his home country make Floating down the Liffey a delightful romp through Dublin's grimy streets, mingling scrupulously realistic description and expression with the ironic charm of true Irish humour." -Stephan Grundy, best-selling author of Rhinegold.
Download or read book Literary Translation written by Jin Di and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it realistic to expect great literature of one language to be re-presented artistically intact in another language? Literary Translation: Quest for Artistic Integrity is a systematic delineation of a practical approach toward that seemingly idealist aim. A summing up of a career devoted to the study of literary translation enriched with the experience of translating between several languages, it offers a clear and thorough exposition of the theory behind Professor Jin's monumental achievement in producing a worthy Chinese Ulysses, illustrated with a profusion of enlightening and instructive examples not only from his own work, but also from that of many others, including some world-famous translators. This makes Literary Translation an invaluable reference to translators of literature between almost any pair of languages, not just Chinese and English. It will also be of considerable interest to teachers and critics of twentieth-century literature in English, to students of Modernism, to researchers in comparative literature and in comparative culture, and to teachers of language.

Book Synopsis Radiohead and the Resistant Concept Album by : Marianne Tatom Letts
Download or read book Radiohead and the Resistant Concept Album written by Marianne Tatom Letts and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the British rock band Radiohead subverts the idea of the concept album in order to articulate themes of alienation and anti-capitalism is the focus of Marianne Tatom Letts's analysis of Kid A and Amnesiac. These experimental albums marked a departure from the band's standard guitar-driven base layered with complex production effects. Considering the albums in the context of the band's earlier releases, Letts explores the motivations behind this change. She places the two albums within the concept-album/progressive-rock tradition and shows how both resist that tradition. Unlike most critics of Radiohead, who focus on the band's lyrics, videos, sociological importance, or audience reception, Letts focuses on the music itself. She investigates Radiohead's ambivalence toward its own success, as manifested in the vanishing subject of Kid A on these two albums.

She began campaigning on behalf of the people society had left behind by developing addiction services, becoming an activist in Trinity, and then as a senator in the chamber of the Seanad. But as the debate around consent gained pace, the lines between personal and political were redrawn, and Lynn was called to reckon with her past in a new and frightening way ...Intimate and brave, People Like Me is the exhilarating story of one woman's journey to the brink and back, emerging as a leading light for change in Ireland and an inspiration to women everywhere.
Download or read book Radiohead written by Phil Rose and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Radiohead’s formation in the mid-1980s, the band has celebrated three decades of creative collaboration and achieved critical acclaim across music genres as cultural icons. Recognized not only for their musical talent and daring experimentation, Radiohead is also known for its work’s engagement with cultural and political issues. Phil Rose dissects Radiohead’s entire catalog to reveal how the music directs our attention toward themes like cyber technology, the environment, terrorism, and the inevitability of the apocalypse. With each new album, Radiohead has sought to reinvent its sound and position in the music industry. Abandoning traditional distribution for their 2007 In Rainbows album, Radiohead experimented with a pay-what-you-want model that embraced the crowd-sourced commerce that has continued to gain prominence in modern consumer culture. In addition to chronicling the band members’ various solo projects, Rose outlines Radiohead’s political and civic activism. As the most up-to-date and thorough discussion of this landmark body of musical multimedia, Radiohead: Music for a Global Future recounts the band’s triumphs and tragedies along with their role at the forefront of adaptation both to a changing music industry and a rapidly changing world.
Book Synopsis Ireland's Arctic Siege of 1947 by : Kevin C. Kearns
Download or read book Ireland's Arctic Siege of 1947 written by Kevin C. Kearns and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 19 January 1947 Ireland was invaded by a freakish anticyclonic weather phenomenon unleashed from the depths of Siberia. Its prolonged two-month grip entombed the country in snow and ice. This arctic siege brought freezing temperatures of 7° Fahrenheit -14°C, a piercing east wind reaching 60-70 m.p.h., five major blizzards, and snowdrifts of 12 to 20 feet-some topping 50. Cars, buses, houses and entire villages were buried, leaving scores of passengers and inhabitants marooned. Roads were blocked, telephone and electricity lines felled and towns and farms isolated as food and fuel dwindled. Tragically this happened amidst the worst fuel crisis in Ireland's history. People were forced to strip wood from their homes, and nearly half of all Dubliners were burning furniture to survive. Severe food shortages and a virulent influenza epidemic weakened people. By 19 February 1947 Dublin's death rate had more than doubled as the poor and elderly succumbed to hunger, cold and illness. Kevin C. Kearns presents a graphic account of what was regarded as a near-biblical calamity of blizzards, freezing, hunger, floods, and threatened famine-so imperilling, wrote one newspaper, that it seemed almost as if the wrath of God was directed against Ireland. It is a vivid tale of suffering and courage, death and survival, of human resilience and real heroism, poignantly authenticated by the oral testimony of those who lived through the arctic siege.

Download or read book Finnegans Wake written by John Gordon and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1986-12-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only full-length study of Finnegans Wake to outline and catalog the immense amount of naturalistic detail from which Joyce built the book. The opening chapters describe the physical setting, time, and main characters out of which the book is constructed. John Gordon argues that behind this detail is an essentially autobiographical story involving Joyce's history and, in particular, his feelings toward his father, wife, daughter and the older brother who died in infancy. Many of the author's findings are new and likely to be controversial because recent criticism has tended to the belief that what he attempts to do cannot be done. This new study of Finnegans Wake represents a radically conservative approach and is intended to function both as a guide to the newcomer seeking a chapter-by-chapter plot summary and as an original contribution to Joyce criticism.
