Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the application of optimal, multiobjective control theory control theory to flight control design for the approach and landing phase of flight. Five flight control systems were designed using classical, H2, H infinity, and Mixed H2/H infinity methods. The MATLAB(Trade Mark) MUTOOLS(Trade Mark) and AFIT MXTOOLS toolboxes were used to produce the optimal, multiobjective designs. These designs were implemented for flight test on the Calspan VSS I Learjet, simulating the unstable longitudinal dynamics of an F-16 type aircraft. A limited handling qualities investigation was performed. Model following was used in the design phase to meet handling qualities specifications. The designs were successfully implemented and verified on the Calspan Learjet prior to flight test. An unmodeled aircraft mode was discovered just prior to flight test that made three of the designs slightly unstable. However, all of the designs achieved Level II or better Cooper-Harper handling qualities ratings for the landing tasks performed illustrating that the optimal multiobjective methods used can give acceptable or better handling qualities.

Book excerpt: In-fl ight simulation experiments performed in 1967 with a variable-stabil ity aircraft during the author's stay at Princeton University, motivated the study of handl ing characteristics of future transport aircraft with closed-loop fl ight control systems. In 1972, the first experiment took place at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR, using one of its research aircraft. In anticipation of expected developments in (digital) fl ight control technology, the research programme following the first experiments was aimed at the establ ishment of quantitative handl ing qual ities criteria. An appreciable part of that programme has been sponsored by the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programs (Nederlands Instituut voor VI iegtuigontwikkel ing en Ruimtevaart) and the Department of Civil Aviation of the Netherlands (Rijksluchtvaartdienst). In 1981, a thorough review of the extensive and valuable data gathered was started. The result, presented in this book, was also included in the author's thesis for a Ph.D. degree of the Delft University of Technology. To introduce the reader to the multi-discipl inary field of handl ing qual ities research, introductory chapters are presented on longitudinal aircraft dynamics, closed-loop fl ight control systems using non-mechanical signal transmission, human pilot dynamics, hand I ing qual ities assessment techniques, and the present status of handl ing qual ity criteria.

Book excerpt: This technical report presents the results of a limited handling qualities evaluation of augmented longitudinal flight control systems designed with state-space optimization techniques. The objective of the test was to evaluate the handling qualities of four longitudinal flight control systems during the approach and landing phase of flight. Three of the flight control systems used state-space design techniques and the fourth used classical design techniques. The four flight control systems were evaluated using the Variable Stability Simulator II (VSS II), which was a highly modified Learjet Model 25. Testing was requested by Wright Laboratory, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and was conducted under the authority of the Commandant, USAF Test Pilot School.

Book excerpt: The systems-analysis theory of handling qualities (which describes the pilot's adaptive behavior in closed-loop operation by servo techniques, and relates his opinion-ratings to his adapted characteristics and the system performance) is used to reveal some important parameters associated with the numerator terms in the airframe longitudinal transfer function. The predictions are verified by five experienced test pilots operating in a fixed-base aircraft simulator. Four possible numerator effects on handling qualities are analyzed theoretically: short-period lead effect on pitch attitude tracking, static-to-short-period gain effects on attitude tracking, short-period lead effects on the control of short-period divergence, and numerator frequency and damping effects on altitude tracking. The results are correlated with other test work, and the implications of these results on future handling qualities research and specifications are discussed.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to design an experimental flight test program for the Total In-Flight Simulator CTIFS) directed toward the interface between flying qualities requirements and flight control system design criteria. The eventual goal is to provide an interpretation or translation of flying qualities requirements for use by the flight control system designer. Specifically, an angle of attack and pitch rate command system matrix involving both short term and long term dynamics are specified for evaluation. A major objective of the research was to demonstrate that flying qualities criteria and flight control system configuration or architecture can be independent. Finally, additional configurations are proposed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic decoupling.

Book excerpt: Flight tests were conducted and techniques developed for evaluating the handling qualities of an aircraft using combat-oriented air-to-air tracking maneuvers. This technique involves precision tracking of a target aircraft through wind-up turn and constant angle of attack turn maneuvers. The gun camera film of these maneuvers was analyzed for characteristic pipper motion relative to the target and tracking errors in the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Correlation of these data with pilot comments provides a means of evaluating the acceptability of aircraft stability and handling qualities in the maneuver environment for which the aircraft was designed. The TWeaD II F-4, which incorporated a variable gain control augmentation system (CAS), was used in the flight development of these tracking test techniques. With the CAS, three levels of handling qualities, ranging from good to unaugmented (poor) were evaluated in pitch, roll, yaw, and the combination roll and yaw axes. These handling qualities levels were successfully correlated with pipper motion, tracking error, and pilot rating and comments to the extent that acceptable handling qualities were distinguished from unacceptable handling qualities, and deficiencies were discovered and isolated. Tracking test techniques proved to be a powerful tool for optimizing the TWeaD II flight control system in an in-flight environment.

Book excerpt: The results of a flight test program to investigate the effects of higher-order control system dynamics on the handling qualities of a fighter airplane are presented and discussed. This research was undertaken using the variable stability T-33 airplane as an in-flight simulator. This in-flight investigation was based on a similar fixed-base ground simulator program. Higher-order response characteristics were obtained by altering the elevator stick feel system dynamics and elevator actuator dynamics in conjunction with four different sets of longitudinal short period airplane dynamics. In the investigation, the dynamics of any of the three elements (feel system, actuator, and airplane) could be changed independently of the others. Three of the set of four airplane characteristics were investigated as a fighter in 'up-and-away' flight, and the fourth was evaluated as a fighter during landing approach. Thirty-two different configurations were evaluated by one evaluation pilot (Pilot B) and 35 configurations were evaluated by a second evaluation pilot (Pilot H). Essentially the same configurations were evaluated by both pilots and rated using a new pilot rating scale. Pilot H also rated the configurations for their pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies using a PIO rating scale. Pilot comments were recorded in flight and the comments and ratings were related to various handling qualities parameters and response characteristics of the configurations. (Author).
