Book excerpt: This investigation was conducted to compare the incidence and severity of simulator sickness between two flight simulator visual systems and two groups of pilots. Both visual systems were found to produce an increase in simulator sickness symptomology, and some pilots terminated the simulator sessions due to severe discomfort. Of the pilots who completed the simulator sessions, simulator sickness symptomatology significantly increased over the sessions. There were no differences in the measures of simulator sickness between the two visual systems or groups. The pilots recovered from the adverse effects of the simulation within 30 minutes following the sessions. Simulator-induced sickness has been found to occur in conjunction with the use of various military flight trainers (e.g., Kennedy, Lilienthal, Berbaum, Baltzley, and McCauley, 1989). The percentage of users that have experienced simulator sickness symptomatology have ranged from 11 to 88 percent, depending upon the simulator (Casali and Frank, 1988). The symptoms of simulator sickness that were observed included: eyestrain, headaches, dizziness, sweating, drowsiness, and nausea.

Atrium II, Cincinnati, OH 45202 Artificial intelligence (AI) programs represent knowledge in a fashion similar to human knowledge and the activities of an AI system are closer to human behavior than that of traditional systems. Thus, AI enables the computer to act more like a human instead of making the human think and act more like a computer. This capability combined with applying human factors concepts to the interface can greatly improve the human-computer interface. This paper provides an intro duction to artificial intelligence and then proposes a number of methods for using AI to improve the human-machine inter action. AN INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Definition There are many definitions of artificial intelligence (AI) running from the very general to the very detailed. Perhaps the most well accepted general definition is that by Elaine Rich: "Artificial intelligence is the study of how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are better", (Rich, 1983). A good example of a detailed definition is provided by the Brattle Research Corporation; "In simplified terms, artificial intelligence works with pattern matching methods which attempt to describe objects, events or pro cesses in terms of their qualitative features and logical and compu tational relationships," (Mishkoff, 1985).

Book excerpt: This open access textbook leads the reader from basic concepts of chromatin structure and function and RNA mechanisms to the understanding of epigenetics, imprinting, regeneration and reprogramming. The textbook treats epigenetic phenomena in animals, as well as plants. Written by four internationally known experts and senior lecturers in this field, it provides a valuable tool for Master- and PhD- students who need to comprehend the principles of epigenetics, or wish to gain a deeper knowledge in this field. After reading this book, the student will: Have an understanding of the basic toolbox of epigenetic regulation Know how genetic and epigenetic information layers are interconnected Be able to explain complex epigenetic phenomena by understanding the structures and principles of the underlying molecular mechanisms Understand how misregulated epigenetic mechanisms can lead to disease

Book excerpt: Of interest to designers of future combat vehicles is the effect of indirect vision upon vehicle driving, particularly the effect of the camera lens field of view (FOV). In a field study with eight participants negotiating a road course in a military vehicle, the driving performance was measured for natural and indirect vision. The indirect vision system was driven with fixed panoramic flat panel, liquid crystal displays in the cab and a forward viewing monocular camera array mounted on the front roof of the vehicle and tilted slightly downward. The results are that for benign driving conditions (a well-marked course, good visibility, and essentially flat terrain), the participants successfully drove the vehicle with indirect vision for the different camera FOVs: near unity, wide, and extended. However, with natural vision, they drove the course 26.5% faster and made a nominal 0.5% fewer lane-marker strikes than they did with the indirect vision systems. Further, the course speed significantly decreased with increased camera FOV, while the number of lane marker strikes increased slightly. While the course speed decreased with increasing FOV, the speed of travel was perceived as increased because of the scene compression. Although the heart rate increased significantly with course speed because of the increased exertion, the estimated metabolic work output was least for the natural vision and increased with the indirect FOV because of the longer course times. Workload ratings show a significant increase in perceived workload with indirect vision, while an investigation of situational awareness shows an increase in the demand component. Most participants reported discomfort associated with motion sickness while in the moving vehicle with the displays. The estimated subjective stress rating of the drivers was least for natural vision and increased with indirect FOV. When the camera's FOVs were compared, the driving performance was fastest with the near-unity FOV. c.

The first part focuses on the analysis and characterization of the second most abundant biopolymer. The following part is devoted to the biological aspects of lignin such as biosynthesis and degradation. In the third part, chemical modification strategies and the preparation of composites as well as nano- and microparticles are discussed. The final part addresses the industrial application of lignin and its derivatives, as well as lignin materials. The usage for synthesis of biofuels, fine chemicals and in agriculture and food industry is covered. This book is a comprehensive source for researchers, scientists and engineers working in the field of biopolymers as well as renewable materials and sources.
