Download or read book Flight Measurements of the Low-speed Characteristics of a 35 Degree Swept-wing Airplane with Area Suction Boundary-layer Control on the Flaps written by Seth B. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests have been conducted to determine the flight characteristics of an F-86A airplane equipped with an area-suction boundary-layer-control system on the flaps, and to investigate the possible operational problems which may arise on a flight installation of boundary-layer control. The effectiveness of the flap was determined in conjunction with the normal slatted leading edge (open and closed) and a modified leading edge incorporating camber and an increased leading-edge radius. Measurements were made of the lift, drag, and to a limited extent, of the suction requirements. Performance computations were made to show the effect of boundary-layer control on take-off, climb, and landing. The results of the flight tests are compared with those of full-scale wind-tunnel tests of a similar installation on a model incorporating F-86 wing panels and a modified flap.

Book excerpt: Tests have been conducted to determine the flight characteristics of an F-86 airplane equipped with a blowing-type boundary-layer control installation on the trailing-edge flaps. Included in this study are the pilots' evaluation of the operational use of the boundary-layer-control system. The effectiveness of the flap was determined in conjunction with slatted leading edges, and an inflatable rubber boot on the leading edge. Measurements were made of the lift, drag, and flow requirements. Performance computations were made for take-off, climb, and landing. The results of the flight tests are compared with those of full-scale wind-tunnel tests of a similar type installation, and with those of flight tests of a wing-shroud blowing system of an F9F-4 airplane.

Book Synopsis Synergistic Airframe-propulsion Interactions and Integrations by :
Download or read book Synergistic Airframe-propulsion Interactions and Integrations written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper addresses the subject of Synergistic Airframe-Propulsion interactions and integrations (SnAPII). The benefits of SnAPII have not been as extensively explored. This is due primarily to the separateness of design process for airframes and propulsion systems, with only unfavorable interactions addressed. The question "How to design these two systems in such a way that the airframe needs the propulsion and the propulsion needs the airframe?" is the fundamental issue addressed in this paper. Successful solutions to this issue depend on appropriate technology ideas. This paper first details some ten technologies that have yet to make it to commercial products (with limited exceptions) and that could be utilized in a synergistic manner. Then these technologies, either alone or in combination, are applied to both a conventioal two-engine transonic transport and to an unconventional transport, the Blended Wing Body. Lastly, combinations of these technologies are applied to configuration concepts to assess the possibilities of success relative to five of the ten NASA aeronautics goals. These assessments are subjective, but they point the way in which the applied technologies could work together for some break-through benefits.
