Book excerpt: Everyone else in the tiny town of Enfield, Texas, calls fall football season, but for the forty-three members of the Fighting Enfield Marching Band, it’s contest season. And for new saxophonist Anna James, it’s her first chance to prove herself as the great musician she’s trying hard to be. When she’s assigned a duet with mellophone player Weston Ryan, the boy her small-minded town thinks of as nothing but trouble, she’s equal parts thrilled and intimidated. But as he helps her with the duet, and she sees the smile he seems to save just for her, she can’t help but feel like she’s helping him with something too. When her strict parents find out she’s been secretly seeing him and keep them apart, Anna and Weston learn what it truly means to fight for something they love. With the marching contest nearing and the two falling hard for one another, the unthinkable happens, and Anna is left grappling for a way forward without Weston. Ashley Schumacher’s Full Flight is about how first love shapes us—even after it’s gone.

Book excerpt: From the National Book Award–winning author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the tale of a troubled boy’s trip through history. Half Native American and half Irish, fifteen-year-old “Zits” has spent much of his short life alternately abused and ignored as an orphan and ward of the foster care system. Ever since his mother died, he’s felt alienated from everyone, but, thanks to the alcoholic father whom he’s never met, especially disconnected from other Indians. After he runs away from his latest foster home, he makes a new friend. Handsome, charismatic, and eloquent, Justice soon persuades Zits to unleash his pain and anger on the uncaring world. But picking up a gun leads Zits on an unexpected time-traveling journey through several violent moments in American history, experiencing life as an FBI agent during the civil rights movement, a mute Indian boy during the Battle of Little Bighorn, a nineteenth-century Indian tracker, and a modern-day airplane pilot. When Zits finally returns to his own body, “he begins to understand what it means to be the hero, the villain and the victim. . . . Mr. Alexie succeeds yet again with his ability to pierce to the heart of matters, leaving this reader with tears in her eyes” (The New York Times Book Review). Sherman Alexie’s acclaimed novels have turned a spotlight on the unique experiences of modern-day Native Americans, and here, the New York Times–bestselling author of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian takes a bold new turn, combining magical realism with his singular humor and insight. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Sherman Alexie including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Book Synopsis Helicopter Flight Dynamics by : Gareth D. Padfield
Download or read book Helicopter Flight Dynamics written by Gareth D. Padfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 1526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book The behaviour of helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft is so complex that understanding the physical mechanisms at work in trim, stability and response, and thus the prediction of Flying Qualities, requires a framework of analytical and numerical modelling and simulation. Good Flying Qualities are vital for ensuring that mission performance is achievable with safety and, in the first and second editions of Helicopter Flight Dynamics, a comprehensive treatment of design criteria was presented, relating to both normal and degraded Flying Qualities. Fully embracing the consequences of Degraded Flying Qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. In this third edition, two new Chapters are included. Chapter 9 takes the reader on a journey from the origins of the story of Flying Qualities, tracing key contributions to the developing maturity and to the current position. Chapter 10 provides a comprehensive treatment of the Flight Dynamics of tiltrotor aircraft; informed by research activities and the limited data on operational aircraft. Many of the unique behavioural characteristics of tiltrotors are revealed for the first time in this book. The accurate prediction and assessment of Flying Qualities draws on the modelling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing practice on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined mission tasks, derived from realistic performance requirements. High fidelity simulations also form the basis for the design of stability and control augmentation systems, essential for conferring Level 1 Flying Qualities. The integrated description of flight dynamic modelling, simulation and flying qualities of rotorcraft forms the subject of this book, which will be of interest to engineers practising and honing their skills in research laboratories, academia and manufacturing industries, test pilots and flight test engineers, and as a reference for graduate and postgraduate students in aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: The Unwilling and the Reluctant: Theoretical Perspectives on Disobedience in the Military and The Apathetic and the Defiant: Case Studies of Canadian Mutiny and Disobedience, 1812-1919 are the first two volumes in a series devoted to disobedience issues in the Canadian military. Now with The Insubordinate and the Noncompliant, the trilogy is complete. Military leadership has both formal and informal dimensions. The formal leadership of any organization must ensure that it minimizes the divergence between institutional aims and the actions of informal leaders. When this separation occurs, the result is sometimes mutiny. These incidents of insubordination and noncompliance represent a form of dialogue between military personnel and their leadership. The Insubordinate and the Noncompliant offers a perspective on the Canadian experience with military mutiny in the twentieth century in an effort to provide relevant lessons for today.
Book Synopsis Flight Evaluation of Various Phugoid Dynamics and 1/Th Values for the Landing-approach Task by : Charles R. Chalk
Download or read book Flight Evaluation of Various Phugoid Dynamics and 1/Th Values for the Landing-approach Task written by Charles R. Chalk and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal handling qualities in the landing approach are studied. The T-33 variable stability and variable drag airplane was used in a flight program to evaluate various short period dynamics, phugoid dynamics, drag characteristics and elevator control authority levels. The first phase of the flight program was directed mainly at longitudinal short period dynamics, drag variation with angle of attack and elevator control authority. The second phase of the flight program was directed at phugoid dynamics, short period frequency, elevator control authority and drag characteristics. Drag variations with angle of attack, airspeed and elevator deflection were considered. Pilot ratings and comments are related to the airplane characteristics tests.
Book Synopsis Design Criteria for the Future of Flight Controls by : S. G. Fuller
Download or read book Design Criteria for the Future of Flight Controls written by S. G. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings are reported of a symposium held in Dayton, sponsored by the Flight Dynamics Laboratory during 2-5 March 1982. The symposium was planned and ran by the Flight Control Division, specifically the Flying Qualities Group and the Control Techniques Group as part of an ongoing effort to revise and upgrade both MIL-F-8785C, Military Specification, Flying Qualities of Piloted Airplanes, and MIL-F-9490D, Flight Control System-Design, Installation and Test of Piloted Aircraft, General Specification For. Specialists from both the flying qualities and flight control system disciplines were gathered in Dayton from both industry and government agencies. Formal and informal presentations, plus workshop discussions, were structured around proposed draft versions of the new Flying Qualities MIL-Standard and Handbook and the new Flight Control Systems MIL-Specification and Handbook. This report contains a record of the presentations and discussions as submitted by the individual authors.
