Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected chapters from the German concrete yearbook are now being published in the new English "Beton-Kalender Series" for the benefit of an international audience. Since it was founded in 1906, the Ernst & Sohn "Beton-Kalender" has been supporting developments in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The aim was to publish a yearbook to reflect progress in "ferro-concrete" structures until - as the book's first editor, Fritz von Emperger (1862-1942), expressed it - the "tempestuous development" in this form of construction came to an end. However, the "Beton-Kalender" quickly became the chosen work of reference for civil and structural engineers, and apart from the years 1945-1950 has been published annually ever since. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a milestone in concrete technology and application. It permits the construction of both more slender and more durable concrete structures with a prolonged service life and thus improved sustainability. This book is a comprehensive overview of UHPC - from the principles behind its production and its mechanical properties to design and detailing aspects. The focus is on the material behaviour of steel fibre-reinforced UHPC. Numerical modelling and detailing of the connections with reinforced concrete elements are featured as well. Numerous examples worldwide - bridges, columns, facades and roofs - are the basis for additional explanations about the benefits of UHPC and how it helps to realise several architectural requirements. The authors are extensively involved in the testing, design, construction and monitoring of UHPC structures. What they provide here is therefore a unique synopsis of the state of the art with a view to practical applications.

This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the theory and applications of finite element (FE) modeling of post-tensioned (PT) concrete structures, and provides the updated MATLAB code (as of 2019). The challenge of modeling PT prestressed concrete structures lies in the treatment of the interface between the concrete and prestressing tendons. Using MATLAB, this study develops an innovative nonlinear FE formulation which incorporates contact techniques and engineering elements to considerably reduce the need of computational power. This FE formulation has the ability to simulate different PT frame systems with fully bonded, fully unbonded or partially bonded tendons, as well as actual sliding behavior and frictional effects in the tendons. It also allows for the accurate simulation of anchor seating loss.

Download or read book Estimation of Beam Prestress by Deflection and Strain Measurements written by JinWoo An and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory test of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures have been used widely to explore the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete components and structures; Such tests are often time-consuming and costly. However, numerical models have been shown to compare favorably with experiments. Thus, computations are viewed nowadays as efficient alternatives to tests, time-wise and cost-wise. In the research reported in this thesis, finite-element model were used in a study of pretressed structural components in order to correlate levels of pretension with deflection and strain measurements. The two main objectives were to develop a suitable finite element model of prestressed concrete beams and to forecast beam prestension on the basis of deformations resulting from specified simple load, e.g., a uniformly distributed transverse load. A commercial finite-element analysis package (ANSYS 12) was used to set up, use and evaluate the computational model. Furthermore, a finite-difference model was employed in order to ascertain the validity of ANSYS results by comparison with engineering beam theory taking into account the applied pretension. This study demonstrates the potential usefulness of deflection and strain measurements as indicators of the pretension applied or remaining in prestressed concrete beams.

Brighton and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the existing bridges are in need of repair and strengthening due to various reasons including design flaws, fatigue and deterioration of steel reinforcement, increase in traffic volume, and accidental impact loads during collisions between vehicles and bridge girders or piers. The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials to repair and strengthen the deficient infrastructures has become very popular due to FRP's well known advantages such as high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, light weight, and ease of applications. This paper presents a review of existing experimental investigations and field applications of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete structures. Various FRP retrofit techniques are also discussed. A Finite Element Model (FEM) of a prestressed reinforced concrete beam is modeled based off an experimentally tested beam. The model is intentionally damaged by cutting two prestressing strands and one mild steel bar. The beam is repaired with three layers of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to recover the original design strength of the beam.
