Book Synopsis FLEXIBLE-WING PRECISION DROP GLIDER. by : RYAN AERONAUTICAL CO SAN DIEGO CALIF.
Download or read book FLEXIBLE-WING PRECISION DROP GLIDER. written by RYAN AERONAUTICAL CO SAN DIEGO CALIF. and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flexible-wing paraglider concept was investigated as a means of controlled cargo delivery from either fixed-wing aircraft or rotary-wing aircraft to a predetermined landing site. Fullscale inflatable wings and control platforms were designed, fabricated, and flight tested. Specific areas of investigation included packing methods, launch techniques, deployment, transition from the parachute mode into the wing, controllability, glider performance, ground station manual control techniques, and automatic-home control evaluation. Considerable testing was directed toward determining the optimum packing method and deployment technique in an effort to achieve system reliability and toward effective system control in an effort to achieve minimum circular-error-probability. The feasibility of using the flexible-wing glider as a controllable means for cargo delivery to a predetermined landing site was successfully demonstrated. A flight envelope, encompassing allowable limits of airspeed, altitude and payload, was established for the final configuration of the series. (Author).

This book was released on 1963 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An operational demonstration and evaluation is made of the Ryan Flexible Wing Precision Drop in Thailand during March-July 1963. Thirty five drops were made. The glider is a radio-controlled aerial delivery system deployed from an aircraft with the capability of delivering a 300 lb payload to a designated landing zone at night or in all-weather conditions. The system consists of three main components: a reinforced cardboard cargo container, an aluminum control box, and a folded inflatable wing housed in the recessed center of the control box. In a packed, ready for flight condition, the system measures 24x32x48 inches and weighs approximately 386 lb. The high lift capability of the glider wing permits a 3.1 to 1 glide ratio, allowing a horizontal offset of 3.1 ft for every foot of altitude. This permits the pilot to release the cargo some distance away from the drop zone, avoiding enemy fire, unfavorable terrain, and disclosure of the position of friendly forces at the drop zone to the enemy. Horizontal offset can be increased or decreased depending on location of the drop aircraft in relation to the wind. The wing has a fixed rate of descent for a given cargo weight which can be increased by steep turns. It is about 11 ft/sec for a 300-lb payload. (Author).

Book Synopsis Flexible Wing Precision Drop Glider Operational Test and Evaluation Program by : Ryan Aeronautical Company
Download or read book Flexible Wing Precision Drop Glider Operational Test and Evaluation Program written by Ryan Aeronautical Company and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program was to conduct a flight evaluation and demonstration of the Precision Drop Glider in Thailand to provide information concerning the operational capabilities of a precision delivery concept. Evaluation of available launch aircraft, typical environmental conditions, and cargo requirements were accomplished. An on-the-job training program of indigenous personnel was conducted concurrently with other program objectives. Specific areas of evaluation included performance within the operational envelope, radio interference, CEP and obstacle clearance demonstration, and environmental effects upon the system. Analysis of reliability and turn-around requirements were accomplished. In addition to the above, demonstrations were provided to potential users within the Southeast Asia area to aquaint them with the concept and to obtain data relating to their particular application requirements. All flight hardware, five control platforms and ten wings, utilized throughout this test and evaluation program was refurbished residual equipment from a previously conducted concept feasibility flight program on which 139 actual concept tests were accumulated.
Book Synopsis Flex Wing Precision Delivery Glider System by : Ryan Aeronautical Company
Download or read book Flex Wing Precision Delivery Glider System written by Ryan Aeronautical Company and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a program conducted to determine the capabilities of the Ryan 2000 Pound Payload Flex Wing Prrcision Delivery Glider System. The concept of using a Flex Wing glider as a precision aerial delivery system has been previously demonstrated by this contractor under controlled flight conditions for sized wings from 10 to 30 feet in length. One of these systems, a 300 pound Payload Precision Drop Glider, has been successfully demonstrated and evaluated in Southeast Asia, where the system performed simulated operational missions.
Book Synopsis Flexible Wing Cargo Gliders: Final program summary report by : Ryan Aeronautical Company

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The data contained herein presents the results of the study which relates to the performance of the towed air logistics gliders. Four basic configurations, with payload capacities of 250, 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 lbs. each, were analyzed for towing and free-flight modes. Performance and flight characteristics of Army aircraft used for towing, both for tow and free of tow regimes, were also analyzed; and analysis of air drop configuration of 1,000 lb. payload capacity was made, with ejection and deployment time and motion study included.
