Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of Gabriel Faur‘s a composer of songs for voice and piano traverses six decades (1862-1921); almost the whole history of French m die is contained within these parameters. In the 1860s Faur the lifelong prot of Camille Saint-Sa was a suavely precocious student; he was part of Pauline Viardot's circle in the 1870s and he nearly married her daughter. Pointed in the direction of symbolist poetry by Robert de Montesquiou in 1886, Faur as the favoured composer from the early 1890s of Winnarretta Singer, later Princesse de Polignac, and his songs were revered by Marcel Proust. In 1905 he became director of the Paris Conservatoire, and he composed his most profound music in old age. His existence, steadily productive and outwardly imperturbable, was undermined by self-doubt, an unhappy marriage and a tragic loss of hearing. In this detailed study Graham Johnson places the vocal music within twin contexts: Faur own life story, and the parallel lives of his many poets. We encounter such giants as Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine, the patrician Leconte de Lisle, the forgotten Armand Silvestre and the Belgian symbolist Charles Van Lerberghe. The chronological range of the narrative encompasses Faur first poet, Victor Hugo, who railed against Napoleon III in the 1850s, and the last, Jean de La Ville de Mirmont, killed in action in the First World War. In this comprehensive and richly illustrated study each of Faur 109 songs receives a separate commentary. Additional chapters for the student singer and serious music lover discuss interpretation and performance in both aesthetical and practical terms. Richard Stokes provides parallel English translations of the original French texts. In the twenty-first century musical modernity is evaluated differently from the way it was assessed thirty years ago. Faur‘s no longer merely a 'Master of Charms' circumscribed by the belleque. His status as a great composer of timeless

Book excerpt: The dead are stirring in Ingola. It's been fifteen years since he helped save his best friend from an ancient Goddess, and High Sorcerer Etienne wants nothing to do with the Gods—old or new—any longer. But when the lost spirit of a young noblewoman needs his help, Etienne finds himself pulled back into a world of dark magic, pirates, and Old Gods. Ryou is loyal to his Queen, the ruler of pirates and thieves, but when he is sent to assist Etienne with unraveling the mysteries of missing ships and walking dead, he finds his loyalties tested. Is the sly mage just a distraction or something more? It is up to the mage, the spirit, and the pirate to thwart the evil tainting the land of Ingola in this high-stakes adventure, complete with mystery, action, and LGBTQIA+ romance. Content Warnings: Violence, gore, death, non-explicit sex. What readers are saying: "I really enjoyed the book. It was a great ride. Full of adventure, queer romance, and magic. I enjoyed the pace, the relationship building, and the fight scenes. What I would have done to read a book like this growing up. I didn't have to project myself into the read because you wrote it directly into it." —Pedro L "The evolution and continuation of the Call of Calamity saga set fifteen years in the future. A mature Etienne has fine-tuned his mage skills and finds himself embarked on a journey that includes a beautiful young noble cut down in her prime and trapped in the spirit body, a strong skillful pirate that is infuriating, seductive, entertaining, and intriguing. Unsolved murders and death mages, blood magic, and mystery make this an enticing read. It also is one of the rare books that is LGBTQIA+ friendly. The inclusiveness is refreshing." —Kat R

It explores in detail the lives and achievements of a vast range of composers, as well as looking at such key topics as music history (from medieval plainchant to contemporary minimalism), performers, theory and jargon. Throught Griffiths skilfully blends lightly worn scholarship with personal insight, whether examining the emotional colouring that different musical keys achieve or charting the rise and development of the symphony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year as high school solo and ensemble festivals approach, choir directors and voice teachers search for the right songs for their students to sing. There is so much music available for young developing voices, but how can an overworked teacher keep track of it all? Songs for Young Singers, a careful review of more than 2,000 songs printed in over 70 anthologies, has been written to address the needs of choir directors and voice teachers of junior high and high school age students. Section I lists songs by title as well as the anthologies in which they are found . Teachers wishing to explore the works of a particular composer will turn to section II, where songs are listed by composer. In section III, IV, and V, the songs are categorized by Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels for Quick reference. Section VI lists the anthologies reviewed with a detailed description of the vocal demand of each song in the anthology. The songs have been evaluated on seven criteria: melodic contour (including range), phrase length, language, rhythm, accompaniment, harmonic language, and dynamics, and are listed by title, composer, and level of difficulty.
