Book excerpt: The essays in this text deal with aspects of British legal learning. It traces the tradition of learning dating back to the Middle Ages and how the inns of court provided the equivalent of a legal university. The essays describe how before the middle of the 19th-century there was little formal provision of legal education in Britain and that law in the ancient universities was not intended to have practical value and entrance to the bar was not dependent upon written examination.

Book excerpt: At the end of the War Between the States, great numbers of rootless, exhausted men and women set out to try and rebuild their lives in the unmapped, untamed freedom of the Great Plains. Noble McCurtain had been sickened by the slaughter of the war—he deserted, seeking a place where he could live in peace. Fleta Corey had waited years for her husband to return from the war, trying desperately to keep herself and her little boy alive. Noble chanced by their cabin just in time to save them from a murderous band of raiders, and they decided to join forces and head west… There, on the Santa Fe Trail, they would find not the peace they were seeking, but danger and death, and love and hope.

In 1914, war in Europe feels far away to most of the people in Fleta Jaeger’s social circle—but not to Fleta, whose beloved cousin is studying in England. Fleta attempts to disguise her fear with too much gaiety and drink, but her friends and family begin to worry about her. Julian Prebensen, Fleta’s father’s favorite employee sees she’s vulnerable and embarks on a scheme to win her for himself—and if her father’s successful shipping company comes with her, all the better. Fleta resists, and her resistance results in her living as a virtual prisoner in her parents’ lavish home. Grantham Northrup, who has known Fleta since childhood and loved her for years, realizes he must take action to save the woman he loves from a dubious fate. But when Fleta flees with her mother’s jewels, and no one knows where she’s gone, it’s a race between Julian and Grantham to see who will find her first. This is book two in Lakeside Lovers series and can be enjoyed independently. Book excerpt: This book untangles the components of police education and advocates a robust community-based training model with significant civilian oversight. The recommended approach recognizes that the citizenry needs to be included in the provision of basic police education, for it is they who must both support and be served by their police. The police must be role models for society, demonstrating that freedom and rights come with obligations, both to the community as a whole and to individuals in need within that community. Ultimately, the quality of police training and the public’s safety depend not only on the leadership of police executives as well as the quality of educational institutions and police candidates but also on the building of a community’s trust in its police. The issues of police recruitment, education, and retention have greater consequence in an era when protests and other signs of negativity surround law enforcement. Several incidents, including, most notably, George Floyd’s murder by police, have sparked new training initiatives regarding police de-escalation and community engagement. At the same time, the proliferation of gun violence and a contentious political climate have led some officers to refrain from undertaking proactive types of policing. In this context, reform of the police education system is urgent. This book examines police training at all levels of government—local, regional, state, and federal. In addition, citizen participation programs, including the role of the media and programs for furthering law-related education (LRE), are highlighted. The proposed police education model recognizes that ordinary members of the American public need to contribute to the provision of basic police education, for it is they who must both support and be served by their police. The focus is on teaching a "guardian style" of policing at the local level. Police education would combine higher education, necessary practical proficiencies, and intensive field experiences through a gradual level of greater responsibility—likely extending over a 2-plus-year period for trainees with less than a year of previous college credits. This book will be of interest to a wide range of audiences such as law enforcement professionals and trainers, including those in executive development programs in police departments; community leaders, scholars, and policy experts who specialize in policing; concerned citizens; and students of criminal justice, especially those interested in police organization and management, criminal justice policy, and the historical development of police.

A page-turning, sword-fighting fantasy adventure for middle grade and up. Book 1: Rebels of Halklyen A dark sorcerer, a corrupt king and a hidden village of rebels. Assassins are not always the bad guys. In Abbarkon, it is best to keep your head down and your guard up. As long as he can remember, 14-year-old Flint has done exactly that. He ignores both the whispers of a monster named Martokallu and the rumours of a rebel group assassinating high-born dukes. Those stories mean little to him as he washes dishes and scrubs floors. On the one day that Flint breaks his own rule to defend a friend, his master ends up dead. Accident or not, Flint is sentenced to death. Hearing of his exploits, the Hawks rescue him from the executioner and whisk him away to the hidden village of Halklyen. Experts with their blades and bows, the rebels are the true defenders of the kingdom. They give Flint a sword and teach him how to use it. Before long, Flint learns that the dark sorcerer, Martokallu is real. When the Hawks are forced into the open, Flint is ready to join the fight. Will the Hawks be strong enough to win against an army of Martokallu's Followers? Book 2: The God Sword The dwarves guard a secret. The Hawks must prove they are worthy. The Kingdom of Abbarkon is safe. There is a new king and Martokallu is dead. Or is he? If he returns, the Hawks will need the God Sword. In search of the fabled weapon, Flint and Fleta join the Hawks on a trek through the Dwarven Kingdom of Tsaralvia. Along the way, they discover an unsettling truth: the Protectors of the God Sword do not want them there and they will do everything in their power to stop them. If the Hawks hope to save Abbarkon, they must prove they are worthy of the blade. Book 3: The White Wolf The Hawks thought the war was over. A mad sorcerer, a barbarian horde and the elven army think otherwise. Thousands of barbarian warriors from the frozen land of Nairt'kun arrive in Abbarkon's north while an elven army prepares to attack from the south. Among the northern raiders is Venadis, a young slave girl. Her masters fear her beast-shifting magic and force her to wear an iron collar. Intent on freedom, she slips away from the blood-thirsty horde and with her healing powers, she earns a place in the Hawks. When Flint, Fleta and the others head south on a mission to assassinate the elven emperor, she goes with them. The elves must be stopped. Will the Hawks get there in time to change the course of the war? Mother and son authors, Paula Baker and Aidan Davies team up to tell the action-packed adventures of the Hawks. Perfect for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Christopher Paolini's Eragon, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter, Darren Shan's Demonata, and John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice. The excitement starts here! Over 1000 pages in print. Get the ebook today with one click.

Book excerpt: They call me Lucifer. Devil. The Fallen Angel. But the truth? It's a little more complicated. For millennia, I sang praises at the right hand of God. Until one day, the melody changed. This audiobook isn't about damnation and fire. It's about rebellion, about questioning authority, and maybe... just maybe... finding a different kind of paradise. Put on your headphones, mortals. It's time to hear the story from the other side. Buckle up for "Lucifer," an audiobook experience unlike any other.
