Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there has been increased attention to issues of sexuality in the Caribbean over the past decade, there continue to be very few in-depth ethnographic studies of sexual minorities in this region. A timely addition to the literature, Flaming Souls explores public discourses focusing on homosexuality and the everyday lives of gay men and 'queens'in contemporary Barbados. David A.B. Murray's dynamic study features interviews with government and health agency officials, HIV/AIDS activists, and residents of the country's capital, Bridgetown. Using these and records from local libraries and archives, Murray unravels the complex historical, social, political, and economic forces through which same-sex desire, identity, and prejudice are produced and valued in this Caribbean nation-state. Illustrating the influence of both Euro-American and regional gender and sexual politics on sexual diversity in Barbados, Flaming Souls makes an important contribution to queer studies and the anthropology of sexualities.

Book excerpt: South Africa possesses one of the richest popular music traditions in the world - from marabi to mbaqanga, from boeremusiek to bubblegum, from kwela to kwaito. Yet the risk that future generations of South Africans will not know their musical roots is very real. Of all the recordings made here since the 1930s, thousands have been lost for ever, for the powers-that-be never deemed them worthy of preservation. And if one peruses the books that exist on South African popular music, one still fi nds that their authors have on occasion jumped to conclusions that were not as foregone as they had assumed. Yet the fault lies not with them, rather in the fact that there has been precious little documentation in South Africa of who played what, or who recorded what, with whom, and when. This is true of all music-making in this country, though it is most striking in the musics of the black communities. Beyond Memory: Recording the History, Moments and Memories of South African Music is an invaluable publication because it offers a first-hand account of the South African music scene of the past decades from the pen of a man, Max Thamagana Mojapelo, who was situated in the very thick of things, thanks to his job as a deejay at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. This book - astonishing for the breadth of its coverage - is based on his diaries, on interviews he conducted and on numerous other sources, and we find in it not only the well-known names of recent South African music but a countless host of others whose contribution must be recorded if we and future generations are to gain an accurate picture of South African music history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male-centered theology, a dearth of men in the pews, and an overrepresentation of queer males in music ministry: these elements coexist within the spaces of historically black Protestant churches, creating an atmosphere where simultaneous heteropatriarchy and "real" masculinity anxieties, archetypes of the "alpha-male preacher", the "effeminate choir director" and homo-antagonism, are all in play. The "flamboyant" male vocalists formed in the black Pentecostal music ministry tradition, through their vocal styles, gestures, and attire in church services, display a spectrum of gender performances - from "hyper-masculine" to feminine masculine - to their fellow worshippers, subtly protesting and critiquing the otherwise heteronormative theology in which the service is entrenched. And while the performativity of these men is characterized by cynics as "flaming," a similar musicalized "fire" - that of the Holy Spirit - moves through the bodies of Pentecostal worshippers, endowing them religio-culturally, physically, and spiritually like "fire shut up in their bones". Using the lenses of ethnomusicology, musicology, anthropology, men's studies, queer studies, and theology, Flaming?: The Peculiar Theo-Politics of Fire and Desire in Black Male Gospel Performance observes how male vocalists traverse their tightly-knit social networks and negotiate their identities through and beyond the worship experience. Author Alisha Jones ultimately addresses the ways in which gospel music and performance can afford African American men not only greater visibility, but also an affirmation of their fitness to minister through speech and song.

Book excerpt: Once upon a time there were seven good friends. They were the forgotten little brothers and sisters of the Big Chill generation, born in the turbulent year when the flames of Watts lit the City of Angels and napalm kissed the war-torn skies of Vietnam. They called themselves The Underground. For Justin and Mia, Josh and Caroline, Amy, Seth, and Simon, there was nothing but drugs and music, combined with boundless cynicism and a deep yearning for something that really mattered. As graduation rolled around, they knew they would drift apart. By Labor Day weekend, there was just enough time to throw one last private party. But where? Creepy old Custis Manor was temporarily uninhabited. So they motored out to the moldering southern plantation, ready to party the night away. They could not have known that on the other side of the mirrors, something watched: a corrupt, voracious force, neither fully living nor truly dead. It was a soulless spirit of evil that had spent more than two hundred years cultivating its terrible powers. It was the Great Night. And Custis Manor was its domain. In one terrifying night their lives were forever shattered. One died. One disappeared. The survivors were scarred both inside and out. For twenty years, they couldn't face the truth of what had really happened. Until now. One has gone back, and through the mirror. And now the remaining friends are forced to confront the demons of their own pasts and a greater nightmare beyond their comprehension. Together they must face the Great Night, lay waste to its vicious legacy, and free the thousands of souls still trapped there, as the reunited Underground meets the Underground Railroad of souls. A truly original metaphysical thriller—gory and intense, satisfying and unique, Underground is a startling vision of the nightmare dimension from one of the true masters of the genre.

Book excerpt: This was a time . . . Before History Before Man knew of the value or meaning Of God First came the Angels . . . It was their world to rule and reign Almost gods themselves In a world That had almost forgotten the . . . Warrior Angel Known as Nathaniel . . . the fourth . . . Arcangel And all the angels were Warriors Elite, the perfect creations of God. Whether they had evolved as far as they were able Man, will never know In their time, Heaven had never known dissention or disobedience until Heaven . . . found that day It was the day that man was created in the image of his Creator, as wellas in the likeness of Angels. Man was born to be. Innocent of all that was created before him, but lesser than the angels, man was granted the protection of his angel brothers as teachers and guides from the moment of man's birth Perhaps it was jealousy that created the events that followed, that sided angel against angel until Lucifer, the greatest of all angels, and once the crest of the Arc himself, led the revolt against the decision of their Creator His vow was to destroy the very heart of man's purity; thereby proving his lesser worth, for no angel shall bow to the wishes of man. Even though Man's spirit was blessed to one day, stand alongside the very throne of all creation and beside His only Son, The Christ. This was the time that shaped Man's fate until the time of Man's birth, when he would be delivered by the Love of Christ Himself. Fore the infant soul of man had been gifted with the very light, essence of the Creator . . . Himself It was a gift, not considered when the angels themselves, were created eons before. However, this was a new time and a new beginning. Man, was blessed to be the inheritor of all creation and considered to be of soul and spirit in rebirth to a new age, in a new world, and more importantly . . . in anew vision, a reflection of the Creator Himself . . . so had begun. Born without the powers of complete knowledge, as his angel brothers, man was still given freedom of will, to choose for himself, his own destiny, and therefore too granted the power to procreate, and grow within himself, to find his own reasons to be.

The story begins when the author, F.M. Bonevento, is six and he meets Mary Ann who is seven. Over the years, they continue as friends sharing common interests, until one summer day in 1961, they discover that they have fallen in love. Their romance and long marriage is a treasure of shared joys. The idea of the collection of verses started years ago as a unique gift for Mary Ann, and it grew into this book full of verses that will touch your heart and bring you a glimpse of the joy of romance. Verse, unlike narrative prose, uses images painted with words to express the feelings that dwell deep within the human heart. From the endearing poem "The Perfect Kiss" to the passion of "Fire," the emotions are personal and heartfelt. The Signs and Seasons of Love Verses to paint images of love Verses, in a world that has so little time, for the sweetest images of the heart Lines giving but the faintest hint, of the love she gives so abundantly Phrases and couplets, crafted to touch her heart, as her love so often touches mine How meager the offerings, still they spring from the depths of my heart Oh, how I wish I had the art to truly tell, what lives within me...

Book excerpt: A Kaleidoscope of Song is an exciting collection of poems (160 pages) composed by Mixed-African poet and author, Christopher Lee. The poems draw strongly from his experiences, imagination and vibrant dreams. There are Character poems, Love poems, Dark Poetry, Inspirational and Religious verse. General poems also feature. There is a poem for virtually any age and the book is thought provoking with an emphasis on ease of flow and hyperbole. The reader is taken on a fantastical journey where they experience the poems through the eyes of the writer. The author says, "We live in a world system that must be appreciated yet challenged. Life, to maintain its authenticity and adventure, is best lived without a training manual. Some poems may appear contentious yet no malice is intended. While I question the Matrix system I do love my fellowman as nobody chose their birth but had it thrust upon them." The work came about as a result of the poet's personal experience, e.g. Pleasure Hotel.
