Book excerpt: Desire in the broadest sense, as a form of generous self-assertion should ideally increase with the passage of time as we gradually acquire deeper insight into ourselves and others. Prescriptive cultural stereotypes, however, put obstacles on our path to progress as individuation. Yet growing older should not entail renunciation of the singularity of personal fulfilment. This volume is a collection of literary testimonies to the power of art to challenge and resist the social constraints on desire in the context of aging. In the essays, men and women claim their right to age in desire and imaginative vigour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olin Tunnel's journalistic curiosity led him in many directions. He drove to a secluded rural Ku Klux Klan meeting on a night in the 1950's and risked taking notes by flashlight while robed Klansmen were speaking and burning crosses. Later he recalls posing as a homeless vagrant at various Salvation Army lodges. He also admits sneaking into a CBS network rehearsal wearing dark glasses and carrying a clipboard. He shares a unique style of expression through stories, reflections and poetry. Writing for as long as he remembers, he brings humor, inspiration and insight from over seven decades of living. In spite of chronic childhood asthma that continued into high school and almost prevented graduation, he became an Eagle Scout, ordained United Methodist Minister, speech and drama teacher, and a school social worker. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas Wesleyan University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Emory University. He is a Texas Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Chemical Dependency Counselor.

Book excerpt: I loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me to fly. He might’ve been my brother’s best friend but he was my everything. The only one who understood me. My safest place. My person. Until one night changed it all and we became strangers in a single breath. Now, years later, I see him every day at the fire station. I watch him raise adorable twin girls as a single dad. But he has no idea how hard it was to see him move on without me. How much I still burn for him. A twist of fate changes everything. When my life is on the line, it’s Calder who saves me–who comes charging back into my heart with a vengeance. And makes it clear he’s determined to stay. But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good…

Book excerpt: I’m Ava Locke. Three months ago, my worst nightmare came back to life. But with Kian’s help and Will’s unwavering support, I managed to take out Veynix the Venomous for good. Too bad Talon, Landshaft’s elite assassin and poison masters, won’t go away. A new drug is sweeping Boston. And unfortunately for me and the other Hunters here, once infected, there’s nothing any of us can do but wait to see if we burn, too. To make matters worse, the Fire Circle has called in a team from Hydron, a Water Circle-CIA operation outside our jurisdiction, to consult. Talon is still working on their plan, but the only thing we know is that it somehow involves Ember witches. Unfortunately, the surprises Talon keeps bringing are nothing compared to the one awaiting me at Headquarters when I return. Because as it turns out, the most dangerous thing to you is also the closest. Maybe I’ve been burning all along.

Book excerpt: Bill Cosgrove, in his fourth and latest book, graphically depicts the early history of the Chicago Fire Department with authoritative accuracy. He gives the reader an insight into how the Department was organized, how it functioned, the use of technology that was available at the time, and paints a vivid picture of the many great fires of the day. He also describes the tremendous physical stamina, dedication and bravery of the firemen and the intrepid leadership of some of the officers. Bill provides the reader with a highly detailed story of the tragic stockyards fire of December 22, 1910 where 21 firemen lost their lives, including the Department's Chief of the Brigade, James Horan. This is such a fascinating account of the early history of the Chicago Fire Department that the reader will have great difficulty putting the book down until it is finished. A great read, by a great story-teller! Thoroughly enjoyable and fully factual. William C. Alletto Deputy Fire Commissioner (Retired) Chicago Fire Department

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildland fires have an irreplaceable role in sustaining many of our forests, shrublands and grasslands. They can be used as controlled burns or occur as free-burning wildfires, and can sometimes be dangerous and destructive to fauna, human communities and natural resources. Through scientific understanding of their behaviour, we can develop the tools to reliably use and manage fires across landscapes in ways that are compatible with the constraints of modern society while benefiting the ecosystems. The science of wildland fire is incomplete, however. Even the simplest fire behaviours – how fast they spread, how long they burn and how large they get – arise from a dynamical system of physical processes interacting in unexplored ways with heterogeneous biological, ecological and meteorological factors across many scales of time and space. The physics of heat transfer, combustion and ignition, for example, operate in all fires at millimetre and millisecond scales but wildfires can become conflagrations that burn for months and exceed millions of hectares. Wildland Fire Behaviour: Dynamics, Principles and Processes examines what is known and unknown about wildfire behaviours. The authors introduce fire as a dynamical system along with traditional steady-state concepts. They then break down the system into its primary physical components, describe how they depend upon environmental factors, and explore system dynamics by constructing and exercising a nonlinear model. The limits of modelling and knowledge are discussed throughout but emphasised by review of large fire behaviours. Advancing knowledge of fire behaviours will require a multidisciplinary approach and rely on quality measurements from experimental research, as covered in the final chapters.

Home to the last gold rush in America, Teller County attracted a slew of peculiar characters. And many never left. A Victor Hotel regular named Eddie met his untimely death when he tumbled down the elevator shaft. A female apparition clad in Victorian clothing appears on the stairs of the Palace Hotel. A closed tunnel on Gold Camp Road is said to echo with the sounds of screaming children. And lingering spirits are still prisoners at the old Teller County Jail. Linda Wommack uncovers the eerie thrills and chills of Cripple Creek and Teller County. “Linda Wommack knows where all the ghosts are in southern Teller County—at least the ones who show themselves in various places, mostly old buildings . . . For the paranormal community, southern Teller County is the place to be.” —Pikes Peak Courier

Book excerpt: An ace fighter pilot aims to save a shattered America from Russian invasion in this new Wingman novel from “the best high-action thriller writer out there” (Jon Land). Former US Air Force major Hawk Hunter and his band of patriotic ex-military men have fought tirelessly to reunite their fractured nation after the Russian nuclear sneak attack that put a devastating end to World War III. Now, returning from a space odyssey that began with the diversion of a comet headed for Earth, Hunter finds a 60,000-man Russian army occupying New York City, ready to invade the rest of America. Equally alarming are reports claiming that Hawk’s former girlfriend, Dominique, is living with the head of the Russian secret police in a Manhattan penthouse. Buzzing through the city’s skyscraper canyons in a tiny STOL Highlander and glimpsing the enemy invaders’ massive weaponry for himself, Hawk realizes he’s up against the greatest danger his homeland has ever faced, even with the help of Captain “Bull” Dozer and his team of ex-Marines. But with the woman and the country he loves in dire peril, threatened by a mysterious convoy of Russian superships, the Wingman will apply all his aviation prowess and strategic ingenuity to devise a plan to launch the fiercest, most crucial battle for America yet, no matter the risks. Filled with fast-paced, furious action and a wide range of aircraft and military hardware that will fascinate techno-thriller fans, Battle for America brings back favorite characters from earlier books in the series and delivers a riveting story that reveals new insight on America’s most enigmatic hero: the Wingman.
