Book Synopsis Flame Dragons of the Korean War by : Jerry Ravino
Download or read book Flame Dragons of the Korean War written by Jerry Ravino and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of collaboration by Jerry Ravino and Jack Carty, veterans of the Korean War with the Flame Platoon, Headquarters Company, First Tank Battalion, First Marine Division, who did not meet until almost 50 years after what went down in history as the Forgotten War. Although the two former tankers served with the Flame Platoon in different places and different times in that conflict, it is a testament to their determination to research and record a part of the war that heretofore had not been chronicled in detail. Though it has been some 50 years past the fact, this is their story -- as memory best serves them and others who helped them tell it. Learn more about the FLAME DRAGONS @ www.flamedragons.com.
Download or read book Red Dragons written by Walter J. Eldredge and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Red Dragons of the 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion was never relieved from combat duty. For 1007 consecutive days the battalion ..".moved along the entire width of the battle line, emplacing where the fighting was heaviest, inflicting tremendous casualties...and redeploying when a relative lull occurred to yet another sector where the savage battle flared anew." Thus read one of the battalion's two Presidential Unit Citations. The story of this battalion has never been documented. Based on personal interviews and original, long-forgotten and unpublished records, Red Dragons puts the reader in the trenches on Korean mountainsides in every kind of weather and every kind of action. To left and right the reader finds soldiers who fought the "Forgotten War" with little reward and by their courage and sacrifice held the line behind which America gathered strength for its ultimate victory in half a century of Cold War. Walter J. Eldredge is a 1968 graduate of MIT and retired from ExxonMobil Corporation. Walt is an experienced backpacker and sailor. He and his wife Peggy live in Baton Rouge, LA where they are active volunteers with many community organizations and participating in the lives of their five adult children. Walt's father was a mortar company commander with the red Dragons. Walt says of his work with veterans, "I have shared in the memories of ordinary men who drove themselves to extraordinary limits. I have been able to make those memories available to their families and friends who often have no idea of what these men achieved or what they endured. Many have told me that my work 'broke the ice' for discussions that otherwise would not have taken place. Many of my closest friends are men who fought alongside my father before I was born."

Book Synopsis Brotherhood in Combat by : Jeremy P. Maxwell
Download or read book Brotherhood in Combat written by Jeremy P. Maxwell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American leaders such as Frederick Douglass long advocated military service as an avenue to equal citizenship for black Americans. Yet segregation in the U.S. armed forces did not officially end until President Harry Truman issued an executive order in 1948. What followed, at home and in the field, is the subject of Brotherhood in Combat, the first full-length, interdisciplinary study of the integration of the American military during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Using a wealth of oral histories from black and white soldiers and marines who served in one or both conflicts, Jeremy P. Maxwell explores racial tension—pervasive in rear units, but relatively rare on the front lines. His work reveals that in initially proving their worth to their white brethren on the battlefield, African Americans changed the prevailing attitudes of those ranking officials who could bring about changes in policy. Brotherhood in Combat also illustrates the schism over attitudes toward civil-military relations that developed between blacks who had entered the service prior to Vietnam and those who were drafted and thus brought revolutionary ideas from the continental United States to the war zone. More important, Maxwell demonstrates how even at the height of civil rights unrest at home, black and white soldiers found a sense of brotherhood in the jungles of Vietnam. Incorporating military, diplomatic, social, racial, and ethnic topics and perspectives, Brotherhood in Combat presents a remarkably thorough and finely textured account of integration as it was experienced and understood in mid-twentieth-century America.

Book Synopsis The Japanese Empire Disaster by : Jean Sénat Fleury
Download or read book The Japanese Empire Disaster written by Jean Sénat Fleury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-01-22 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book demonstrates that, even if during the first period of the Shwa era (1931–1945) the real driving force to war was the Japanese military, Hirohito, as supreme commander, gave full support to the army. On multiple occasions, as an emperor, he sanctioned many government policies. Accordingly, he was responsible for the war and for the atrocities that the Japanese troops committed in Asia during the Pacific War. Japan’s Empire Disaster is a book of information and training; a reference document that should be read as an educational tool on the history of the modernization of Japan and the war launched by Emperor Meiji and Hirohito to build Japan Empire in the Pacific and East Asia. The book shares the view of the author on Hirohito’s responsibility on the events that marked Japan’s entry into the war that began when Japanese troops invaded Manchuria on September 19, 1931, and culminated with Japan’s surprise attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941.

Book excerpt: Many anthropological accounts of warfare in indigenous societies have described the taking of heads or other body parts as trophies. But almost nothing is known of the prevalence of trophy-taking of this sort in the armed forces of contemporary nation-states. This book is a history of this type of misconduct among military personnel over the past two centuries, exploring its close connections with colonialism, scientific collecting and concepts of race, and how it is a model for violent power relationships between groups.
